  Nas advice for family
Posted by: Enquiries - 03-27-2023, 03:00 PM - Forum: Before you buy Q&A - Replies (1)

Have an old 2TB WD Mycloud (no longer supported, older OS) and need to set up a proper NAS for the home. Heavy multimedia users (lots of photos, music and video usage - including 4k H.265) and looking for a solution to store on NAS (limited space on smaller laptop SSDs) as well as backup solutions. Prefer network storage to local device storage, but also interested in backup of data - especially for photos and videos. Will have up to 4 users as kids grow in use of mobile devices and/or future laptops for school use. Ability to back up/store/archive photos from mobile devices (all iOS users), videos and be able to play back videos from NAS to devices(smart TVs, laptops, mobile devices/tablets) in home would be ideal. Sharing with family members outside of home a bonus. Could use old WD MYcloud for backup purposes and/or cloud storage (Google drive) for photos as a backup option.

  NAS - Expansion Storage
Posted by: Enquiries - 03-27-2023, 02:00 PM - Forum: Before you buy Q&A - Replies (1)

Hi, love the videos you created, really helped me choosing as NAS system and getting set up for the very 1st time. I have a quick question, I have a synology DS1520 NAS, 4 bays with 16tb HDD and the 5th with a 20tb HDD with Synology RAID SHR 2 Drive tolerance, Im slowly going to upgrade the 16TB HDD's to 20TB HDD's and was wondering if i can repurpose the 16TB in an expansion unit with no RAID as an additional backup with the function of backing up the main volume?

  DSM Select Colour
Posted by: Enquiries - 03-27-2023, 12:30 PM - Forum: Before you buy Q&A - Replies (1)

Hi, I was wondering if it is possible to change the select colour of files and folders in File Station in DSM 7.1.1? It is currently a very light blue colour which makes it very difficult to see and its been driving me nuts.

It is soo much better in QNAP QTS so might have to switch to QNAP if there is no solution.

Thanks in advance

Charles

  DS220+
Posted by: Enquiries - 03-27-2023, 12:30 PM - Forum: Before you buy Q&A - Replies (1)

HI
After watching a number of your very intuitive videos I have purchased a DS220+, after my WD Home Cloud collapsed, fortunately I managed to recover my data, mainly Photos & video. I have for the moment just ordered a Seagate IronWolf NAS hard drive and intend to purchase another in about a months time. My question is can I Just set up on one drive for now and get my data on it, which is on all sorts of media devices, as you can imagine after recovering nearly 2TB , and then add the second HardDrive at a later date. Can you recommend one of your Videos to help me set it up.

Many thanks

Steve Langford

  Family/home theater nas
Posted by: Enquiries - 03-27-2023, 12:00 PM - Forum: Before you buy Q&A - Replies (1)

My main focus is video for the home theater using a shield or zidoo. And storing and sharing old photos/videos from my grandparents with my extended family. There is a lot. Not sure if 2 bay with 20tb or 4 bay with smaller drives whould be better. Or something else.

  replacing aged ReadyNAS Duo
Posted by: Enquiries - 03-27-2023, 11:30 AM - Forum: Before you buy Q&A - Replies (1)

my aged Netgear ReadyNAS Duo (c2011) is probably near end of life. Main issue, no longer considered secure enough for Web control which makes management difficult. Also occasionally loses IP connection.
My big problem with any replacement is noise-level. It lives in the same study as main PC, and once I'd replaced the stock Netgear fan, it's been fine. Currently populated with 2 2TB WD Red drives. Seems very difficult to obtain noise-level ratings from manufacturers.
Main use is media - streaming music files and storing photos & documents. Shared between 2 Windows 10 PCs, also accessed by smart TVs, but doesn't get a lot of traffic.
Looking for a recommendation for QUIET replacement. Probably not enough budget to use SSDs rather than HDDs.

I do not know how to wipe my old NAS HDDs
Posted by: Enquiries - 03-27-2023, 11:30 AM - Forum: Before you buy Q&A - Replies (1)

Hello, I have been following your channel for a while and I have since purchased a QNAP NAS TS453D. I have been using the iron wolf nas drives. I have just upgraded the drives from 6TB to 12TB as I am running out of space. But I have no idea on how to wipe my old NAS drives. I have been searching around the internet, but I don't think there is a definitive guide on it. Since you are the only channel/guide that I trust. I wish to ask you this for reference. I have all 4 of my drives configured in RAID 5 formation, but I have no idea how to wipe them clean after I switch to my new drives. Thank you for taking the time to read this.

NAS required for small home office
Posted by: Enquiries - 03-27-2023, 11:30 AM - Forum: Before you buy Q&A - Replies (1)

Hi,

We have a requirement for NAS in our small 10 member CFA firm.

Our office has 1 iMac (used as a file server), 10 Mac Mini and 1 smb windows desktop. All the devices are connected to the network using LAN cables.

We are running out of storage on our iMac and require a NAS to replace it.

We have a very simple requirement of using the NAS to access files stored on it. The end user will open the file using the NAS, work on the file and save it.

We would be open to the possibility of accessing the NAS when at a client site but the security is a major concern for us (ransomware)

Our current data size is about 2.5 TB and it looks like it will grow. This will be our first NAS after horrible past experience with WD MyCloud and Seagate Black Armour when ransomware infected all our data

We are undecided between Synology or QNAP and also between a 2 bay or a 4 bay NAS. Need your help selecting a suitable NAS

  NAS Replacment
Posted by: Enquiries - 03-27-2023, 12:00 AM - Forum: Before you buy Q&A - Replies (1)

Hello, I had a TS-451 OS Ver. 5.0.0.2131 (20220815).
I also had an external backup SSD drive.
My TS-451 died in October 2022. No longer boots up or posts. After researching it seems possible cause could be bad CPU batch from intel, but not sure.
I was going to upgrade to a NAS with M.2 but discovered, my son had removed my external backup drive and used it for school assignments. Wiped the whole drive. This my question is, what model can I buy with I can add my current 4 drives and has M.2 for future use.
