QTS or QuTS? |

Hi folks,
I'm going to migrate my current DS1817+ to a new TVS-h874-i5-32G, because I need more CPU for 4k transcoding (Plex server) and for some virtual machines.
The idea is to have almost 100Tb space in the NAS, and a cold backup offline with the 10 10Tb hdd I'm using now in the DS1817+).
What I'm think is ... if for my scenario is better QTS or QuTS.
QuTS forces me to take 10 x 20Tb hdd, while with QTS I should start with 6 hdd, then add 2 hdd when needed. On the other hand the big advantage of manage quicker the swap of a faulty part is huge.
Media blocks (Music, Movies, Photos) won't take any advantage from ZTS features right? I won't use deduplication nor compression.
But what about VMs blocks? Better to use compression or not?
Last question: cache. Shall I have a very small cache to improve Plex database (not the movies themselves) and VMs? shall I say to Qnap "use caching only for that particular block"?

Anti-ransomware Backup strategy? |

Ok, so I will have my 920+ up and running soon (4x4Tb). I was thinking to attach an external USB drive of 12TB to the NAS permanently and then setup a permanent back-up so that either instantly or weekly all changes on the NAS will be reflected in the back-up.
But if my NAS gets infected with ransomware and the USB is permanently attached to the NAS, then I guess there is a risk that the back-ups will get infected too.
- what is the best solution to prevent the USB drive attached to NAS getting infected with ransomware?
- I guess that instant back-ups increase the risk of infection? IS it better to detach the USB and work with incremental backups and attach the USB drive only and manually during the back-ups?
- Does Synology have any software to detect ransomware, I mean not the ransomware itself, but rather the effect it will have on stored files, e.g. massive changes of extensions, heavy disk activity due to ransomware encrypting the source files etc.
any advise is appreciated,
Bboy

Set up NAS to use PC for transcoding |

Hello. You helpfully provided me with some buying guideance - thank you.
You also mentioned that Synology has a good guide for how to set up the NAS to use the PC for transcoding, but after searching I cannot find it.
Could you please provide the link to this article?
Also, does this article cover the automation of transcoding on the PC? That is something I would like to understand more about.
Many thanks.

DS 923+ |

Hi there chaps.
Long time viewer of your channel.
I am suffering from analysis paralysis with my NAS pre purchase research.
I am interested in the 923+ because of the 10gbe option. I run a Mac Studio which has a 10gbe network port.
If i connected the 923+ directly to my Mac Studio through additional 10Gb port - is it possible to also connect one of the 1gb ports to my router (also 1gb) and proved network access back out to the Mac via the 10gb connection through the NAS box. (LAN and Internet connection etc.)?
secondly I presume I want 7200 rpm drives but buying four to start with is going to be pricey so i thought I would start with a partial system and build capacity over time with SSD and extra ram and HDD.
Presuming i populate with just 2 HDDs what would be the best way to get about 6TB of storage with redundancy. I will also be hoping to avail of cloudsync to mirror this into my cloud services for an off site BU as part of my overall BU strategy.
Many Thanks
James

First NAS purchase |

Hi!
I'm a video editor and photographer that is looking to purchase my first NAS. I currently use about 16TB of storage, and would like to plan for expanding to accommodate at least 24TB of media. I also plan to use it to store my film library and would like to be able to stream movies from it. My current setup is a mac studio with two 10TB WD MyBook HDD's for backup and a 4TB SSD drive that I keep current projects on for editing.
I've been looking at the QNAP TS 664 and the Synology DS923+ as possible options, with either the Ironwolf Pro or WD Red+ drives. I'm not afraid of spending time learning and setting up a system, but of course user friendliness is a nice bonus. I'm more concerned about reliability and want to make sure it's a system that will serve me in the long run. Any advice between those two systems - or is there another option I should be considering? And what amount of memory should I be considering - should I upgrade to 8G? 16G?
Thanks for any advice!

QNAP Customer Service Quality |

Thanks for all of the great information. I am sold on the QNAP platform and we are looking at the TVS-h1688x to replace our aging Drobo 1200i. And a TS832 for an offsite backup.
My question concerns the quality of QNAP customer service. Several online reviews feel that the tech support is lacking. I think some of this is due to the reliance of the QNAP ecosystem on third party hardware. Of course, QNAP can't be expected to support someone else's products.
Have you heard of any instances where QNAP's tech support/customer service was truly lacking?
This is the only issue standing between me and a QNAP purchase. Thanks for any help you can give.

Netgear GS748TS LAG setup |

Perhaps I'm obtuse or just don't understand Netgear's logic?
I'm trying, unsuccessfully, to set up a LAG for ports 47 and 48, in order to connect to a Bond created on my DS18211+
The steps outlined in this Netgear KB article "How do I set up a LAG between a Smart Managed Pro Switch and a Synology NAS?" don't align with the GS748TS (even though they are in the GS748TS section):
This Netgear KB article "What are link aggregation and LACP and how can I use them in my network?" is very general and indeed refers me to the support section (even though that's where I already am):
The "GS700TS Smart Switch Software Administration Manual" has a section on LAGs in Chapter 4, but just details settings, not a step by step "how" to set them up.
I've watched SpaceRex's "Link Aggregation on Synology NAS + NetGear - Get Better Performance out of Your NAS! | 4K TUTORIAL" and whilst I understand the concepts, the GS748TS's web interface is very different.
Can someone refer me to a "Netgear Idiot's Guide" or relevant GS748TS YouTube post?
Regards,

I have never owned a NAS but am running into storage issues with a large Apple Music Collection and the potentially very large HD and 4k movie collection. I own well over 700 movies in what I call 'SageFlix'. If I ever choose to download all of them, I have no idea what the needed storage would be. I am an Apple Geek and we currently run a 2023 MB Pro, 2020 MB Air, 2 iPhones 1 iPad Pro, AppleTV 4k and 4k LG OLED CX 2020. I am thinking of the newest Terramaster F4-423 or something equivalent. I also have two complete Sonos sound systems in two rooms and Sonos Roam. I would like to save Apple Music on an NAS system and have no idea how to do so.

Upgrading to New 4Bay NAS Help |

I'm looking at upgrading from a QNAP TS-251D to something with a better processor and ability to add a gpu. I'm tired of buffering video and running out of processor speed. I'm looking at both the TVS-472XT-i3 and the TVS-H474. I also want something that can handle running a Windows 10/11 Virtual machine. Is one of these options better than another? What's a good GPU for less than $300? Is ther another model I should look at?

NAS for Plex |

Hi, big fan of the channels and blog. Thank you for your guidance! I've been using Synology for 5+ years to host files and (most importantly) Plex Media Server. My DS218+ has a failed motherboard. It won't start up or get recognized on the network. Based on your reviews, I don't think any of the newest 2-bay Synology devices are a good investment right now because I want hardware transcoding for PlexMS. So based on your article, I purchased a QNAP HS-264. I'm not a big fan of QNAP's software but it'll get the job done. Except I'm trying to move my files from Synology drives to QNAP. I understand I can't swap the drives so I bought new drives for the QNAP and am trying to copy files using SATA to USB3 adapter but the disk is not showing up in File Manager on QNAP. How can I get the files transferred (or is there a comparable 2-bay Synology NAS) so I can get my content back? Thanks!
