I'm sure you've had this question a lot but I'm also sure those people asking had the same findings I have. I am a photographer/videographer and need a large/fast local storage solution for 4K and some 8K editing along with photos (less taxing). I do not need multiple users, just myself but I want fast storage that is reliable for video editing/exports. I can't seem to find a perfect solution with TB3, 6 bays, and SSD caching. I do also love the option of the one touch copy, but that's a luxury item.

I was almost settled on the QNAP TS 664 until I saw that the PCIe slot couldn't take their TB3 adapter. Is there a unit out there for me? or will I need to make some concession?

Have a synology ds220+ , hdhomerun on network, plex media server installed. Can successfully watch live programs, but get an error when I try to record a program. No write access to destination. Problem is it does not indicate what the path to destination is.

I currently own a DS213 and it's getting long in the tooth. I have been reading your articles and watching your videos to determine which drive is best suited for me. I want a fast drive, but I don't want to break the bank. The primary purpose of this drive is to back up my pictures and home videos from my PC (on the same local network as the NAS) and back up my pictures and videos from my cell phone. The concern I have is accessing the files remotely (especially the videos) and having the system lag or slow down (1080p and 4K). I've read the lack of an iGPU of the new Ryzen R1600 can make some hesitant about getting it (more so for Plex). I can't find any real-world benchmarks to assist me in determining what drive I should get, but I am leaning towards the more expensive 723+.

Additionally, I want to pair it with the WD Red Pro 4TB drives that are not (technically) supported.

I'm unsure if I should by the DS723+ or the DS923+. My most important use cases:
- I sync my files via GoodSync from 3 devices via the NAS
- I have Docker with 6+ container running, most consuming are ioBroker and JellyFin (for private picture and videos, no streaming)

I try to get the best performance, but for the start 2 SSD/HDD drives would be sufficient. I would for sure increase the RAM, both can deal 32GB so this would makes no difference I assume.

When I check the Synology page the tell the max. speed would be for the DS723+ 471/225 MB/s and for the DS923+ 592/562 MB/s. But for me the setup look nearly equal so I do not know if the difference in speed comes only when having 4 SSD/HDD drives in place. But when having 2 there is no speed difference?

My questions:
- Which one would you suggest?
- Is there (in case of 2 SSD/HDD drives and equal RAM) a difference in speed?

I've got an ancient R710 (or 720?) Dell server running unraid that I want to replace. It's a huge rack mount server that takes up a ton of space and a ton of power, and pretty noisy too. I'm looking at either a DS1522+ or a DS423+ that was just announced. Really the only reason to even think about the 423+ is for the hardware transcoding. All of my Plex streaming is done locally since I'm on Starlink and upload is not great for streaming that direction. Clients are Apple TV HD, modern iPhones, iPad, and an old cheap Roku. I just ran int a problem with the Apple TV HD and some 4k HIEC encoded media. The Apple TV is not a 4k model and can't handle that format and my old unraid server is a Xeon and has zero ability to hardware transcode. Luckily it has a ton of CPU power and we made it work.

Honestly I'm thinking just got with the DS1522+ to get the extra bay, the additional RAM, the higher upper RAM limit, and all the other modern goodies. But is that a mistake?

I own 4 Drobos, the 5 bay FS, 8 bay Drobo pro, 5D and S connected to my Mac laptops (wifi) and Mac Pros directly (networked and 1 running Plex). With so much data across 4 devices, it is difficult to choose the right system that has the feature of beyond raid. I am leaning towards Synology DS1821+ but am not sure where to jump in. Whatever box is chosen, it will start with all new 8tb drives and the old reds will find a home someplace on eBay. Mmoving from Drobo to something else is really important right now and would love advice.

Can I upgrade RAM

I would like to setup my new QNAP TVS-h674-i3 NAS using QuTS Hero (zfs). I would like to install the OS on my two Samsung 500GB NVME SSD drives, and utilize the Seagate HDD's for all applications and data.

Does anyone have a tutorial for doing this properly?
Also, by doing this, can I NOT have the NVME be the 'default' location for my files/apps? I don't intend to store ANYTHING there except the OS.

I have a Synology Shared Folder named DATA within which I have subfolders containing my media files by type (MUSIC, MOVIES, TELEVISION, etc).

When I try to set up my Library in Plex, in the "Browse for Media Folder" step, I can only drill down to to the DATA shared folder, none of the media subfolders are "seen" by Plex.

I would like to keep this existing file structure, but it appears I must instead have each of the media subfolders as a Synology Shared Folder on the root drive.

Is this correct?
