NAS for Plex

I currently have a DS1019+ with the DX517 expansion filled with 14tb drives. It's about 82% full so I'm looking to expand. I like the ease of the Synology platform because I'm not very computer savvy but they don't seem to offer a robust NAS for PLEX like the 1019+ with plenty of expansion capability (unless I missed something). I saw the recent QNAP TVS-h874 review and think that may be the way to go. As stated before, I'm not very computer savvy so I wonder how simple it will be to set-up and manage compared to the Synology. The majority of my media is HEVC 1080p .265 and I usually have 2 active streams, possibly 3 at times between myself and family that I share the PLEX with. Thank you!

I currently have a Synology ds 918+. With most of my collection being 4K, I have been having issues with playback. “Server not powerful enough to play file”. I would want to play any file at original quality. If I were to upgrade to another nas and that nas were of a different manufacturer like QNAP, would I be able to install and play my four 6tb drives with my movies without complications? Would there be any issues going to a different manufacturer? What would you recommend for me to do? What unit would you advise me to upgrade to avoid 4K problems? Thankfully, Charles

Switch from QTS to QuTS Hero

Hi. I currently have a QNAP TVS-872XT. In the next few days, I will be reseting the system to change the RAID array configuration and add larger drives.
The TVS is an i5 with 64GB of RAM, 2 - 1TB SSDs for caching.
The system is part of my home lab, is used for backups, extra storage, some containers.
While I understand the minor differences between QTS and QuTS Hero, I have not been able to determine if it is beneficial to change over.
One of the things I have not been able to determine which would help is QNAPs support plans for both O/S. Is QTS being phased out, and all new hardware will only support QuTS?
Thank you.

Hi. Love the site and the info.
But really confused with too much info
Ok I have a NAS - 2nd hard bargain - I am new to the NAS wordl
Qnap TP-469 Pro
It came with some drives, but they are WD and one has failed already.
So things I would like to do.
Use for NAS - Working with windows - get my user profile , either running off the NAS or for it to transfer it back and forth at login.
Use the NAS as a small webserver / email store and possible setup a mail server
For backups of my win computer.
I am still unsure the best way to setup up the NAS , in jbod / raid 5 or 6 .. or see the benefits.
Raid isnt a backup solution, but dont want to loose data.
Upgrade the memory to 3GB
Get 4 new hardrives and setup 4tb / 6tb - at good prices.
Possible SSD cache drive etc
But I am completely lost . Could you just give me your opinion and places to purchase these upgrades.
Thank you
Nick

Hello,
I am looking to upgrade my old Qnap TS453 Pro
I need a google drive type replacement application and Qsync Pro does not work the way i need it to, would Synology Drive be a better, more google drive type solution?
I would like the most powerful synology i can get for the money, debating between the DS1621xs+ and the DS1522+, not sure if the 1522+ will be powerful enough as i want to be able to swap files with my work computer in a google drive type environment all day long, would also like to run Plex Media Server at home

Installed E10G22-T1-Mini into a DS1522+ with 2 8TB Iron Wolf drives, but I am only getting 5000 Mbps (LibreSpeed averages 4800 Mbps). I have connected a USG-Flex-XG (connected to 1522+, desktop, and UDM-Pro (SFP+ to Copper set to 10 Gbps)). My desktop is running at 10 Gbps but the NAS will only run at 5 Gpbs - if I select 10 Gbps the NAS will disconnect from the LAN. SFP+ transceiver is a 10 GBase-T SFP+ to RJ-45 10 Gbe.
Any help/suggestion to get to the 10 Gbps will be greatly appreciated.

NAS Recommendation for small local/remote team

I am looking for a NAS solution. We have one video editor who will be working at the same location as the NAS and two content creators/editors who will need access from all over the world. For the remote team, internet upload speed at the NAS location will be the bottleneck. All team members are using Macbooks. Videos are very large and are shot in raw format. We have been looking at the Qnap 874 with the i9, but are wondering if it's more than we need. We are all new to the process of editing with a team and are just now learning to edit on a more professional level, so any advice regarding workflow would also be welcome. Thanks for your time.
