HEVC playback to Fire TV Cube
Posted by: BOFH - 03-24-2023, 11:32 PM - Forum: Home Multimedia - Replies (2)

Hi

I currently have my plex server set up on a mini PC, and watch everything through my Fire TV Cube.  This works great and I can play HDR HVEC files without issue.

Looking to move to a TERRAMASTER F4-423 instead as I need more storage space.

Watching the 4K plex reviews from NASCOMPARES it appears this will struggle to transcode some of my higher bitrate HVEC media.  The fire cube has hardware support for HVEC, does this mean the NAS can direct play the files to the Fire Cube so no transcoding needed?  Or will it still need to transcode as the NAS doesn't support HVEC?

Thanks very much Smile

  NAS for 4K Video Editing
Posted by: Enquiries - 03-24-2023, 10:30 PM - Forum: Before you buy Q&A - Replies (1)

I'm looking for a NAS to edit 4K videos on (I use a Canon EOS R7 if that matters). I only have 1GB of internet speed first of all. second, I don't know what to get, the d620slim,ds920+, and ds1522+ are good price-wise but terrible specs-wise. Seems like I might just have to build a damn rack mount server to get what I want.

  Nas for video stream
Posted by: Enquiries - 03-24-2023, 09:00 PM - Forum: Before you buy Q&A - Replies (1)

I’m looking for a video stream compatible NAS so I can view my video library. I want it to be able to play 4k video / 2k video smoothly.
Should I use an ssd cache drives regardless of the devise disks? If so, what is the recommended gb for cache? Should I use 1 of 2 ssd caches?

Thanks Smile

outdoor camera for Asustor NAS AS3302T
Posted by: Enquiries - 03-24-2023, 08:30 PM - Forum: Before you buy Q&A - Replies (1)

Good afternoon, I have an AS3302T. I would like to know which outdoor camera you recommend. It must be 4k, PoE, Night Vision, temperature -30 C and with a Motion Sensor. On the compatibility page there are many that say that they might not work according to the users who have tested them.

  2nd NAS
Posted by: Enquiries - 03-24-2023, 02:00 PM - Forum: Before you buy Q&A - Replies (1)

Hi,

I currently use a DS920+ that is brilliant so I'm now looking for the simplest 2nd NAS that I can schedule backups of my main data to in case of an issue/emergency. It will be kept in another location.

I'm thinking that probably a single drive unit would be sufficient. At this stage, my total data sits at about 4TB of which properly important data like family photo, documents and home videos comes to about 2TB.

I've steadily managed to move away from subscription services such as Dropbox, OneDrive, Google Photos etc but would now like to create my own backup service should something happen to the main unit.

Any advice would be gratefully received.

Many thanks, Tim

  Populate HDD possions in DS1621+
Posted by: Enquiries - 03-24-2023, 02:00 PM - Forum: Before you buy Q&A - Replies (1)

Hi,

I have bought an DS1621+ with 3 x 16 TB HDD and 2 x 1 GB SSD.
Question:
Does it matter in what of the 6 bays i place the HDD?
Because of possible heat of the SSD is it possible to place the HDD in slot 4, 5 and 6 or even slot 2, 4 and 6?

Regards Léon

  Home NAS
Posted by: Enquiries - 03-24-2023, 01:30 PM - Forum: Before you buy Q&A - Replies (1)

Hello,

I have WD My Cloud Firmware Version 04.06.00-111 and I would like to change it - it's old. I use my NAS for backup my photos and medias and to watch movies from it. I have a TV Philips PUS8809 2022 (Android TV) and I am watching movies trough the LAN network. Mainly, I use it for watching and secondary, for photo and media backup. I have a PC where I keep my original photos and media.

Could you recommend me a NAS for my purposes? I don't need NAS with many disks (max 2). My NAS stays close to the router and far from the TV, but I can put my NAS close to the TV, if it needs a HDMI connection. And the last thing, I would like to be quiet NAS if it's possible. WD My Cloud is very quiet now.

Thank you in advance

NAS performance upgrade for video editing
Posted by: Enquiries - 03-24-2023, 11:30 AM - Forum: Before you buy Q&A - Replies (2)

Hi NAScompares,

I work as a full-time video editor and also have 1 occasional video editor on my team. We edit .mov files mostly, up to 3 times a year project size is 500-600 GB, other projects are smaller. Editing with proxies.

We have the Synology DS1522+ with 3 x 10TB Ironwolf Pro HDDs. No upgrades yet.

Most of the advice I find regarding speed and performance for video editing is about upgrading the system to 10gbe.

However, in our current location, we do not have the option to upgrade our internet to 10 Gbps. We currently have 500 Mbps and will upgrade soon to 1 Gbps, which is the max we can get until we move out to another location at the end of this year.

What would be our best options to speed up performance for now without upgrading to 10gbe?
Does installing NVMe SSD cache make sense with a 1gbe connection?
Shall I upgrade RAM and fill the 2 empty HDD slots?
Which action should I prioritize in case the budget is too small?

Thank you for your help.
Emilija
