RSS capable 2.5G LAN Card for Windows, e.g., MEO PCI-E 2.5G Network Adapter
Posted by: Enquiries - 03-24-2023, 09:30 AM - Forum: Before you buy Q&A - Replies (1)

I just enabled SMB Multichannel on my Synology DS918+. I already have both NICs running in as an aggregated link, so the bandwidth to/from the NAS is 2Gb/s both ways.
I enabled the beta SMB Multichannel and connected up my 2.5Gbe router and PC but only getting 1Gb/s SMB transfers.
I've narrowed this down to my onboard Intel I225-V LAN adapter not exposing receiver side scaling (RSS), which Windows needs to operate SMB multichannel.
RSS-enabled 2.5gbe LAN adapters seem to be tricky to find; even if the chipset supports it (on paper) it's often not enabled (by exposing in the driver INF file) for some reason. I notice you looked at this MEO card, which Amazon says supports RSS. Can you confirm? Otherwise, can you recommend a decent alternative that definitely does?

  Which NAS should I buy?
Posted by: Enquiries - 03-24-2023, 08:30 AM - Forum: Before you buy Q&A - Replies (1)

Ok, so I narrowed down my choices.

As I said before, streaming high quality is a must.

So I know that Synology just released the DS423+ for multimedia; however, would it pass the Jelly bean test?

will the processor of the DS423+ will be better than the DS1823XS+? I know that the spectrum is super high, but I rather buy something that plays the videos I want to watch and don't use the storage space than having a NAS that doesn't work.

Synology is a must btw.

Many thanks!

  Which NAS do I need?
Posted by: Enquiries - 03-24-2023, 06:00 AM - Forum: Before you buy Q&A - Replies (1)

Hi guys, hope you can help me with this

I want the NAS to save all my media files in it and then stream to my Apple TV (this is 90% of everything I want to do with my NAS) - Heavy files top image quality.

I want the NAS to transfer the data from my PC to it.

I have a thing for Synology btw

I am planning to install security cameras at home, so potentially will use the NAS.

I was thinking DS923 or DS1522 - At the moment I have like 10TB of data; however, I plan to have one drive as a back-up. Should I buy all drives or should I buy them progressively?

Many thanks!

  iSCSI initiator for mac
Posted by: Enquiries - 03-23-2023, 11:30 PM - Forum: Before you buy Q&A - Replies (1)

Hi, setting up a QNAP TS-H973AX for photo and (at some point) video editing from a mac mini M2 pro with 10Gbe connection. Using SATA SSDs and SATA HDDs for now (U.2 SSD prices a bit scary)

Have watched several of of your videos on why i shoud use an iSCSI LUN, but just as I'm about to set this all up, i watched your latest youtube on video editing on a QNAP NAS where you note there is no native iSCSI initiator on a Mac - argh!

So advice please, which iSCSI initiator for a Mac should i get?
thanks for all the great videos on Youtube..

New Synology NAS or DX517 expansion
Posted by: Enquiries - 03-23-2023, 11:00 PM - Forum: Before you buy Q&A - Replies (2)

I am using Synology DS918+ with 4x4TB WD RED PLUS in Raid5 and I am really happy with it, but the available space is at 80% threshold. I simply need more space. What would you recommend? A new DS920/DS923 class Synology NAS or DX517 expansion of the existing one? What are the pros and cons of both approaches? This time I would need 12/14/16TB disks and I would rather get best value rather than most capacity or cheapest option.

Change from DHCP to Static IP
Posted by: Enquiries - 03-23-2023, 07:00 PM - Forum: Before you buy Q&A - Replies (1)

I have the TVX-h874 for my work from home (personal and business setup) and in my initial setup I think I selected DHCP, but since I don't plan on having it connected to the internet I'd like to switch to Static IP. I can't seem to find where in the qnap setttings or qfinder how I set the Qnap's IP to static now that it is configured. In your video: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=PvBwE2B13eg
at around 12:00 minutes, you mention this can be changed later. Any advice? Thank you for all the info you provide via youtube. As a very novice user for my home setup, your info has been extremely useful.

Advice on NAS for Streaming Media to TV
Posted by: Enquiries - 03-23-2023, 07:00 AM - Forum: Before you buy Q&A - Replies (1)

Hi, Thank you for the great initiative.

I am a fairly decent PC user with experience in building PC's. I have kind of fallen of the grid with the current technology due to work. I don't have the necessary time to go in weeds about what sort of NAS I might require. It would be super if you could help me on this! Thank you for all the help.

The primary use is going to be storing media files to stream movies on TV through maybe a Plex TV application. The other use would be offloading the phone media files, including camera videos and photos, to the NAS drive.

I look forward to hearing from you.

  Asustor
Posted by: Enquiries - 03-23-2023, 06:00 AM - Forum: Before you buy Q&A - Replies (1)

I am leaning towards an Asustor NAS. I first considered the AS5202T. But since launched in 2019 and 2 generations made since then: Asustor AS66 and AS67. One of those seems a better fit, future proofing, m.2 caching slots, quad core, etc. My first question, if I were to purchase an Asustor --for $60 more would you purchase the AS67 or just got with the AS66? Or would you steer me in another direction all together? Originally I was looking for a NAS to replace "the cloud." However, after watching your channel I still want to use it for the benefits of having a personal cloud- not reliant so much on the " big box brand" clouds. Now, I am even more interested the other cool shit you all showed is possible on your youtube channel. BYW love the "I hate Seagulls." Kind of makes me like them more -- I am entertained by their "guest appearance."

What say you?
Thanks, Michael Morar

  Choose between DS218 & DS415+
Posted by: Enquiries - 03-23-2023, 02:30 AM - Forum: Before you buy Q&A - Replies (1)

Hi, I'm currently searching to buy a Synology NAS for my home. My two options are currently the Synology DS218 and the DS415+ as I'll be buying them used from ebay due to my budget.

However my concern is due to the processors and ram as one uses ddr4 and the other ddr3. Which one would you recommend me? I'll be using it as a Minecraft server, plex, cloud/network storage for home phones/pcs and to record my camaras.
