  Driver for DS920 plus
Posted by: Enquiries - 03-23-2023, 12:00 AM - Forum: Before you buy Q&A - Replies (1)

Hi,

I looked at your instructions and got all the way to the cd 'Plex Media Server' and there is no such directory. I did a ls -al and there is a PlexMediaServer directory but I can not cd into that as well. I looks like they may have moved this or something. Do you have any updates to the VaapiDriver=”i965″ procedure?

Thanks,

Rick

Best NVMes to fill two unequal slots.
Posted by: Enquiries - 03-22-2023, 08:30 PM - Forum: Before you buy Q&A - Replies (1)

My Dell Inspiron 16 7610 Laptop has two NVMe slots. A 2280 Gen 4x4 and a 2230 Gen 3x4. Currently has a 1TB 2280 Gen 3 in the Gen 4 slot (Dell's doing). My thought is to buy a Sabrent Rocket 2230 1TB for Windows 11 drive and then the WD Black SN850X for the Gen 4 slot. I would store/work with about 1.25 GB of pics and vids on the Gen 4 drive and back everything up to my 6GB WD DUO. (The DUO is way to slow to work directly with) Am I off base with this? Also considering moving from 16GB of RAM to 64GB at the same time. Thanks,

  DS1823XS+
Posted by: Enquiries - 03-22-2023, 07:00 PM - Forum: Before you buy Q&A - Replies (1)

Ich möchte gerne in dem Synology NAS DS1823xs+ zwei M.2 SSD PCIe 3.0 "OWC Aura P12 4TB Pro" als Storage einbauen.

  HDD Secure Wipe
Posted by: Enquiries - 03-22-2023, 07:00 PM - Forum: Before you buy Q&A - Replies (1)

Hi team - after purchasing my first NAS through yourselves a few years ago, ive now run out of space! Ive upgraded the drives from 4x8Tb to 4x14Tb, and now need to sell on my original drives.

What software do you recommend to SECURELY wipe the drives before I sell?

Also, Im a Mac user - no PC software here! Smile

Thanks,
Duncan

Informal Recommendations for Plex NAS Media Server Hardware
Posted by: Enquiries - 03-22-2023, 05:00 PM - Forum: Before you buy Q&A - Replies (1)

Have brand new 1 GB Verizon fiber internet connecting to new UniFi (Ubiquiti) home system infrastructure (UDM-SE & UniFi APs). Have robust wired and WiFi network, TVs wired to UDM-SE and also wireless. In process cutting cord on cable TV services.

I have an OTA digital antenna, new HDHomeRun Quad Tuner connected to my LAN & WiFi. I just added Plex and Plex Pass for lifetime.

I would like suggestions on best NAS hardware as easy & robust media server. Want to run the Plex media server apps and save to HD whenever possible. Maybe use to save files. Unclear if NAS drives added. Would like to use new WD Red Plus 4TB NAS drive as first drive. Possibly get second NAS drive to run as RAID set-up if makes sense. otherwise will return drive etc..
My TVs are wired and wifi connected and my HDHomeRun can broadcast to all TVs over wireless or LAN.
I had hoped someone would also be familar with the UniFi ecosystem as ideally would like to see a NAS Media Server run smoothly Thx

QNAP TS-H973 best raid example using 4 x ssd cache & 5 x HDD RAID
Posted by: Enquiries - 03-22-2023, 01:30 PM - Forum: Before you buy Q&A - Replies (1)

initial contact/enquiry re: qnap configurations.
recently upgraded and already installed then re-installed with ZFS and now having to consider memory & drive upgrades.
This will possibly result in purchase of expansion QNAP device which it is now clear is on USB3-type C and not SAS 10Gb connected for the model that has been purchased.

  NAS Selection
Posted by: Enquiries - 03-22-2023, 04:30 AM - Forum: Before you buy Q&A - Replies (1)

Thank you for this. I need help with which one to buy, currently looking at (in order): DS1522+, TS-664, DS923+, TS-473A, DS-423+
I've watched about 20 of your videos on the subject and I am still in analysis paralysis.

Use cases:

- media server, Plex, local and remote storage (aka accessible backup), including music, video, photos, and files. I am looking at 5-10 users tops.

- I want to be able to have personal access lists. Ex: I have videos and want to make User123 able to access only some of those, adding more to their collection as User123 becomes "eligible" to see more stuff (kids grow up, it happens). Same with photos, enabling user's access to things instead of copying duplicates into multiple folders for each user.

- data storage - I do photography and my PSDs run up to 2 GBs. Would it work off NAS?

- backups and keeping history of changes?

- sharing certain galleries with "random" people using passwords?

  NAS for Plex
Posted by: Enquiries - 03-22-2023, 01:30 AM - Forum: Before you buy Q&A - Replies (1)

1. presently sharing my media with 5 family members. Very challenging of me to adjust my router to make Plex visible online, but I eventually managed. (not a networking maven)
2. have never had 4K media. Happy with 1080. Wouldn't mind 4K and transcoding capability, but not important.
3. the server will be in an adjoining office with a door to help control noise.
4. user friendliness is very important to me.

i'm a big fan. Thank you so much for this.

Question about external drive on Synology NAS
Posted by: Enquiries - 03-21-2023, 11:30 PM - Forum: Before you buy Q&A - Replies (1)

I have a DS920+ with 4 8TB drives. I also have an external 6 TB hard drive connected via USB to it. The external hard drive is formatted as ext4. I use the Hyper Backup to back the NAS up the external hard drive every morning at 3 am.

My question is this, is the backup on the external drive accessible on a PC if the NAS suffers a catastrophic failure?

If so, how? I have 2 Windows PCs and a Linux Mint PC, if that helps.

  Plex Server
Posted by: Enquiries - 03-21-2023, 11:00 PM - Forum: Before you buy Q&A - Replies (1)

I'm thinking of setting up a NAS as a Plex server and would love some help. I have a ton of movies (some in 4K) that I'd like to be able to stream to TV. I'm running Plex on an old Macbook right now and it's time for an upgrade. I'm thinking either the Synology DS220+ or QNAP TS-464 with Seagate IronWolf Pro drives in a RAID setup for redundancy, but you all are obviously the experts, so I'd love to hear what you think. I'm pretty good at technical setup, so I'm not too worried about that. Just want to make sure I get the right hardware. Not a requirement, but a system that's quieter would be a plus as well.
