  CHOOSING CORRECT NAS
Posted by: Enquiries - 02-16-2023, 04:30 AM - Forum: Before you buy Q&A - Replies (1)

Looking for the correct NAS w/ upgradeable Ram, connections, SSD, PCI slots etc. Pri use for organizing, sharing files, photos, media here at home & remotely between 3 laptops (Windows OS), 2 phones (Android), 2 tablets & 2 Smart TV's (all 4 Samsung) Have researched QNAP, ASUSTOR & SYNOLOGY units but leaning towards one w/ HDMI to connect directly to the TV's & avoid a streaming box as we do NOT subscribe to cable. Also a unit that can utilize additional expansion units as required.
Is it possible to populate a 4-6 bay NAS w/ just 2 X 8TB drives to start then add more or larger drives later? (assuming Raid 5 setup) Will admit to a good general knowledge of computers BUT I'm not an IT wizard so any & all info, suggestions/tips are welcome.
Can you also verify that I will need to run ethernet cable all over my home 4 this to work OR my current mesh Wi-Fi will allow this new hardware to work as I wish?

  2 QNAP TS-262 Questions
Posted by: Enquiries - 02-15-2023, 11:00 PM - Forum: Before you buy Q&A - Replies (1)

I bought a TS-262 after TS-212 HD fail (9 years). Just updated router, therefore, seemed right to get a newer NAS (not replace a disk in old hardware). Went small on drives (4GB - Raid 1) - serves immediate needs (images and music); might try video via PLEX; challenge for another day. Questions at hand…

Is there any way to control the decibel of the BEEP notification? It WAY louder than the old one- I used to do weekly scheduled reboots- but the 262 is so loud it wakes me up! Would really like to turn down the tone a bit. LMK!

The big one. I have used the QNAP HBS software to SYNC the data from 212PUBLIC - - > 262PUBLIC. I am now trying to create the share for Multimedia on the 262– but File Station will not allow me to create that. Do you know why? Is that reserved somewhere? In the end – I need to SYNC the data in the Multimedia share from the 212 to the 262. Help!

  Synology Nas DS916+
Posted by: Enquiries - 02-15-2023, 07:00 PM - Forum: Before you buy Q&A - Replies (1)

I have a DS916+ currently set up with 2x 3TB WD red drives set up in Hybrid raid with one admin account with quick connect access for work use.
I want to use the another two drive bays to install 2x 14TB drives in a separate pool in another Hybrid raid with a separate admin account for personal use at home.
I do not want my colleagues at wort to be able to see my personal files. Is this possible ..?
Many thanks
M Gordon

  Qnap drobo
Posted by: Enquiries - 02-15-2023, 03:30 PM - Forum: Before you buy Q&A - Replies (1)

Hi. Based on your site I bought a Qnap TS464 -thanks for the great review!
Can you help with 2 questions
1. What is the best way of getting the data off my Drobo 5n2 onto the Qnap (1Gb network). I could set up a switch with only those two devices plugged in if this would help. Filestation mounting, any ideas???

2. Do the M2ssd drives used for cache need heat sinks? The instructions suggest it’s optional, but I don’t want to ruin them if it gets too hot….. any thoughts???

Many thanks for your advice. To the amateur, your help is really needed! Smile

ds1522+ or ds1621xs+ ? to be or not to be
Posted by: Enquiries - 02-15-2023, 03:30 PM - Forum: Before you buy Q&A - Replies (1)

hello i hope all is well!
love your content, very useful for a power user like me!
looking to purchase a nas for my home for the following
1) backup about 4 PCs,
2) plex media server
3) general storage (files, possibly VMs)

was wondering what kind of speed i can get out of each of those units if they both had max GB for memory, SSDs for caching and using the 10gb NICs (i understand i need to purchase the nic for the 1522+)
would be looking to use seagate 7200rpm drives, whatever model is supported, probably the largest in size

thanks in advance!

  Synology NAS mapping reconnect failure
Posted by: Enquiries - 02-15-2023, 02:30 PM - Forum: Before you buy Q&A - Replies (1)

Hello,

Following your videos I was able to successfully install and map a Synology DS220j to my Windows 10/Gigabyte motherboard computer. When I shut the computer down and restart the Synology drive no longer is mapped to the computer? I can reset this, but that's a bit of a pain!! Also, when I open the Plex app after remapping the drive, Plex no longer recognizes the NAS. This is perplexing since the Plex software is installed on the NAS? The only solution I've found is to uninstall and reinstall the Plex software. Another very painful process when it's done daily.

Any ideas on how I can correct the mapping recognition when I shutdown the computer?? Thank you for your help and videos.

  Youtube Video Suggestion
Posted by: Enquiries - 02-15-2023, 11:30 AM - Forum: Before you buy Q&A - Replies (1)

Hey Robbie,
Saw your recent video on the Kickstarter NAS, and had an idea (I know, full of em Wink.

There are tons of second had ex enterprise rackmount 4/8/12 bay NAS systems on eBay, FB Marketplace, or local technology recyclers. They are slow, old, and frankly aren't selling well, so get thrown out, or hopefully recycled.

The idea was, what IF, you make a video on how to use a similar N5105 mobo from Ali Express, and replace the heart of one of these. This may inspire people to go out and try and save these old beasts.

I realise you're out here trying to make a living, but perhaps that maybe a service you can offer local to the UK. You still get paid for your time, but ultimately, saving the planet from more ewaste and making quite a few people quite happy.

Thoughts?

Cheers
Dmitry

Is the DS218+ a replacement for the DS-1816+?
Posted by: Enquiries - 02-15-2023, 08:00 AM - Forum: Before you buy Q&A - Replies (1)

Gentlemen,

He: Is the DS218+ a replacement for the DS-1816+?

I have been watching NASCompares videos literally for years, watching those videos, influenced my purchase of all the equipment mentioned in this correspondence therefore, it's no coincidence that I should turn to you for advice.

I purchased the following equipment before being deployed to Afghanistan from my military service.

By the time I returned home, most of the hardware I purchase before my service has been upgraded by the manufacturer to different models.

I have a Synology DS-1816+ with Max DD4 RAM attached to 2 x DX-517 Expansion enclosures, all drive bays are populated with x 16 Seagate Iron Wolf 12 TB Drives.

Synology's installation also had the following complementary hardware added to the above:
1 x Synology's10 Gigabit Ethernet Card
2 x Synology's M-2 500 Mb
1 x E10M20-T1

  NAS device
Posted by: Enquiries - 02-14-2023, 10:00 PM - Forum: Before you buy Q&A - Replies (1)

Want a specific device, but don't know who makes it. IF it is even made. Cant find it yet.

What I want:
Rackmount NAS device. 1U. Maybe 2U but can't believe it really needs to be bigger than 1. Cooling maybe...
NVMe M.2 drives (4+) WD makes them (reds), but what does one put them in?
SFP+ for 10G connectivity to the network

What I Don't want:
Platter Drives. What is this 1999?
Desktop box. I have enough crap on my desk. There is a reason we have racks! I don't need to hug it. I need to put it in the closet and lock the door!
Beehive sounding fans. Yes, it needs to be cooled, yes it will be shut in the closet, but still don't want the noise. (I had a server years ago that was really loud...sold that piece of junk a month after I bought it. It was so loud, I could hear it through the walls)

Nice to have but at this point unnecessary: A+B PSU. I dont have redundant power at the office, so... unless I put it in a data center, not necessary.

Thoughts?
