Synology HD compatibility with WD Red Plus disks
Posted by: Enquiries - 08-02-2022, 10:00 PM - Forum: Before you buy Q&A - Replies (1)

Hello NasCompares,

I'm setting-up a NAS for the first time.
Beforehand I've watched a lot of articles/videos from you guys, which helped me a great deal.

The NAS is a DS920 with WD Red Plus 4Tb disks (WD40EFZX - ean 718037884394)
I really thought I had the rights disks (cmr), but I'm getting a 'disk is not on the compatibility list' message.

Have I overlooked something or has Synology recently changed de compatibility with all Plus models?

I hope you can help me with this.
In any case, thank you for your time.

  Router Change
Posted by: Enquiries - 08-02-2022, 09:30 PM - Forum: Before you buy Q&A - Replies (1)

I have two Synology NAS DS212 & DS1821+

I have tried to use them to give my family links over the internet to photos videos Plex website etc. by Port Triggering & Port Forwarding
Used Synology NAS to setup Ports, failed must be Sky's SR203 ???
Tested the ports “all” blocked removed Kaspersky firewall no joy.

Asked all over in forums to get them to work, got some info back but not enough to buy the right Modem Router.
Was “told to buy by retail sellers” and I bought a RT-AX82U but after trying days I gave up and returned it.
Bought a TP-Link VR2100 part worked get to “see” work Wi-Fi internet but could not get DS1821+ to see it! And no where to plug phone into it like SR203 was supposed to have 3 way splitter box in instructions, so again back it went.
Is there a whole Modem - Router in one Box? both that work on Sky's network “I've been told to buy two” one Modem and one Router? Which two? But have read about I could have the problem of double Nat so I hope not ! And still no DS1821+

Here is what i have found out so far I need to select 'Sky(MER)_VDSL from the router list Etc., DHCP Option 61 not sure how to get different information HOPE YOU KNOW? Is this the authentication used by Sky.

Could you help please? I am looking to purchase a Modem - Router that will replace a ISP Sky's SR203 Router/Modem or give me the right info or a link to ask what I need?

One Person told me TP-Link VR2800 connects and works perfectly with Sky Fibre but I don't have Fibre do I? Nobody seems to know if it works with FTTC? And copper wire into the house.

I cannot see all Manufacturing SPECIFICATIONS of the Modem's – Router's available so need your help to not to buy the wrong one again!

At this time I'm on FTTC land line coming into the house, female socket RJ11 on wall would need a 3 way Splitter Box that is all female then fits the BT landline cable – and then goes onto the Router needs to have DSL leads into Router.

What have other people done and replaced it with to replace the SR203 if you could pinpoint me to one that would be great Please as long as it works! And is secure!
If the phone is the Stop to this I could Go without it? And use mobile only. If you cannot help me, who can?
Thank you for your time

  Suggestions for Home Networking
Posted by: cdpage - 08-02-2022, 08:56 PM - Forum: Networks - Replies (2)

I'm wondering if a switch is something I benefit from.

I have:
1 Gbit Fiber to my ISP Router/Modem. CAT 5e connections are great but WiFi through the walls/floors is not very good...so

I have:
2x TP-Link m9 Mesh units but the connection to these are 1/2 speed at best (significantly worse in the basement). So I still use the main router as well as the mesh.

My question is, should I buy a Switch?
It would give me more hardwired options. (TV, Synology, PS4, M9, AV Reciever, Bell/ISP Cable box)

but would I get more speed in my Mesh network?
would I have more reliable/stable connections?

NOTES:
Two people work in the house M-F
Synology will be upgraded to DS222+ (or similar)
Skipping the ISP Router/Modem will prevent being able to watch the ISP TV (but we haven't watched that in Months so no loss there)

Considerations:
2.5Gbit Switch or better?

  NAS recommendation
Posted by: Enquiries - 08-02-2022, 08:30 PM - Forum: Before you buy Q&A - Replies (1)

I want to buy my first & hopefully last NAS. Id rather over-buy the under. I would prefer to be in 2k-2500 budget. I have typical 1g internet service at home. I want NAS to be used for my whole family to store thier data from ipones, iPads, MacBook, etc. I want to use the NAS as mass storage for all family to use as our main storage. We would keep our devices mostly empty and would be accessing the NAS at home on our home wifi and also (alot) REMOTELY via the internet from our devices. We would be wanting to access our files but even more importantly would want to be able to REMOTELY (vis internet) UPLOAD & STREAM pictures and VIDEOS to our devices. It would be important that VIDEOS play smoothly on our devices (iPhones) when accessing the NAS REMOTELY via internet (cellular and or via wifi if available where we are). I shoot alot of VIDEO in 4k on my iphone so it would be important i can REMOTELY upload, download and stream that 4k content (shot on iPhone) using our iPhones. I need to understand if I would benifit from anything MORE than a NAS with 1g connection or not? Also wondering if embedded graphics would be important or not. ...Which SYNOLOGY NAS should i get? Which HARD DRIVES would be best for me? What total configuration do you suggest? ....WHERE should I order it from? If helps Ive been sort of looking at synology ds920, ds1520, ds1522 and maybe even the ds1621xs+

Video Editing Nas w/ Plex ability
Posted by: Enquiries - 08-02-2022, 07:30 PM - Forum: Before you buy Q&A - Replies (1)

I want an editing nas that has full throughput for a team of 3 editors that will be working simultaneously on a project. All footage is 4k.

I am new to understanding plex, but I believe it could be an option for delivering and managing our projects with clients. Not sure if this is realistic or not.

we do mostly wedding films (mytlic.com) but for each wedding, we offer lifetime storage as a perk of booking.

  High CPU usage with plex
Posted by: Enquiries - 08-02-2022, 01:30 PM - Forum: Before you buy Q&A - Replies (1)

Good day. I purchased a DS1512+ used. Everything works fine it appears). I then upgraded the Ram to (I believe) 4gb. I then purchased 5 specific compatable 6TB hard drives. They are the same for all 5. (Seagate IronWolf 6TB NAS Internal HDD 3.5” SATA 6Gb/s 7200 RPM 256MB Cache). I would have to get back with you on the specific part number. I have Cat 6 cable from router, to switch to the unit. The switch is a TP-Link TL-SG1005D 5-port Gigabit Desktop Switch. I am unsure as to the transcoding selections with in plex. I am trying to run plex on the server. The 4k content is like its not smooth and skips. I am running about 11Mbps of upload speed. Are you able to give much help from this?

  Best NAS
Posted by: Enquiries - 07-31-2022, 10:00 PM - Forum: Before you buy Q&A - Replies (1)

I love your videos. But the "Synology DS1522+ vs DS920+ NAS - Which Should You Buy?" video raised a couple of questions that other videos didn't bring up.

I'm going to be using this to stream personal media, work on video and music files, connect via Wi/Fi in the house and remotely (due to being a Software Developer). I need it to connect fast. Is the 2-core 1522+ enough of an issue to go with the 4-core 920+? I have a 2022 Macbook Pro that is loaded with speed but I worry that the connection with a slower NAS might render that power moot.

I suppose I'm all over the place with my question and being new to NAS (or needing a NAS now), I just want to get the best buy.

Thank you in advance for your input and suggestions

Synology backup web server at a 2nd location?....
Posted by: Enquiries - 07-31-2022, 04:30 PM - Forum: Before you buy Q&A - Replies (1)

Aloha sir! I have a question for you that Synology Tech support wasn't able to answer.

Scenario: Use TWO synology NAS devices to create a redundant web serve, with the 2nd device at a different location?

I am considering taking all my web-hosting in house.

Is there a (good) way to have one synology mirror to an off-site 2nd synology that would instantly become the primary web server should anything happen to the first? Automatically? I understand the heartbeat connection with HA setups, but this would not solve a problem with a large power or web-outage in the area.

Id like the 2nd device in a completely different location, ready to take over for the first should there be any reason the first goes offline. Perhaps you have already done a video on this? If not, any guidance would be appreciated. I was confiding two 720+ with same hardware, 2 locations. OR, a 1620XS+ as primary with a 720+ as backup offsite. (this would be better)

Thoughts? Ideas?

Thank you for all you do in the NAS community! I reference your videos and articles continuously!
