No destructive migrate from DS3617xs to DS3622xs+
Posted by: Enquiries - 09-23-2022, 05:30 PM - Forum: Before you buy Q&A - Replies (1)

I have a 3 volume (two chassis) DS3617xs that I want to migrate to a dual chassis DS3622xs+. I have the DS3622xs+ and would buy a DX1222 chassis and populate with existing new hard drives. Right now the DS3622xs+ has one volume with a manually synced data image from the ds3617xs. On the DS3617xs one volume is data, one is Hyperback data and the third is Active Backup for Business data. I want to keep using the DS3617xs but have the DS3622xs+ as a backup in case the DS3617xs dies. Will one day switch over but not yet. If I use the migration wizard will I still be able to use the DS3617xs as before or can I now only use the DS3622xs+? I know how to keep the data volume on the DS3622xs+ synced with the old NAS but how would I keep the other two volumes synced? Thank You !!!!

TVS-h1288x with 8x WD Ultrastar 20Tb drives, poor / erratic performance (QTS, not QuTS)
Posted by: Enquiries - 09-23-2022, 06:30 AM - Forum: Before you buy Q&A - Replies (1)

Hi. Great website! I'm just wondering if you might have some idea's on what could be going wrong with my TVS-h1288x.
I WAS running 8x WD Red Pro 6Tb drives, in Raid 6 in this unit. They were originally migrated from my TVS-872XT which failed a motherboard for a 2nd time, and I was fortunate enough to be allowed a credit on my now TVS-h1288x, but since my Red Pro drives were running on QTS, it was necessary to change my TVS-h1288x back to QTS before adding the drives to it, to allow it to recover the array, and subsequently the data on it (had no backup).

Anyway! I also still have my older TVS-663 that was also running 6Tb red (not pro, and not smr) drives, also in raid 6, but setup as a LUN over iscsi 10Gb ethernet to QSW-M1208-8c 10Gb switch to get back to the 1288x.

So, if you're with me, I was sacrificing 4 drives out of 14, and running out of space. So i found what for me was a pretty good deal on 8x WD Ultrastar 20Tb drives, and after running drive diagnostics over every sector of the new drives, did the 1 by 1 swap method of migrating the new drives in, and then expanding the storage pool, and volume to the maximum possible size, and as a thick volume. Everything went well, except that by the time i had 5 drives swapped in, i decided to test out the speed with Qnaps built in performance test, and discovered some very inconsistent drive speeds on the ultrastars, compared to the 3 remaining red pro drives. They've been testing anywhere from 120mb/s to 206mb/s i think is the highest i've seen. Where my red pro's would fairly consistently score 234-240mb/s. IOPS was also scoring only between 97 and 128 odd on the ultrastars where the red pro's would consistently score either 146 or 147.
I've tried running qcli_storage -T / -t and it was all over the place as well. It isn't crashing or anything, but it does feel like I can't really load it up without it slowing down, where before it seemed like it would just take everything i through at it and not really bother it.

I pulled one out and plugged it into a windows box, and benched it with crystaldisk and atto, and saw the speeds you'd expect from an Ultrastar drive. About 260mb/s read/write on crystaldisk, and atto sitting about 250mb/s on all tests from 16k and up, and dropping down to 44mb/s odd on 512b tests. Again what you'd expect.

I do not have any other drives present as yet. I plan on getting probably a pair of wd red m.2's, and possibly wd red 2.5" ssd's to fill it out later. I may even try Qtier at that point, but until I can get this resolved I don't want to be throwing more money at it.

I did add 64Gb of ecc udimms, and it's running fine alongside the original 16gb. I did try with just the 16gb, and with just the 64gb and run the tests again to see if it made any difference, but no joy there.
Only other addition is my P2000 which i use primarily for tdarr via container station.

Do you have any idea's on what could be causing the Ultrastars to run so poorly in my Qnap?

Also do you have any other ideas for testing them in the qnap?

I've tried to reach out to Qnap and so far it seems more like they want to blame the hard drive. I reached out to Western Digital also to ask if there might be perhaps some external driver for linux because of the optinand stuff etc, and they just said the drivers are all internal.

Really at a loss as to what could be going wrong...

Anyway, love your work on the website, and just hope your experience might give me a few idea's to check out.

Many thanks for reading all this!!

Cheers,
Dave.

  Which NAS to buy
Posted by: Enquiries - 09-22-2022, 09:00 PM - Forum: Before you buy Q&A - Replies (3)

Matt H
have been watching hours of your videos on NAS this past week and just want to say thank you for the advice and tips.

I am in the process of replacing a QNAP TS-251 2 bay/4GB that died during the pandemic and have learned so much on what to think about. Its setup in my TV room and is mainly a media storage/player for that room. I did use QNAPcloud previously but am going to shy away from it being on the net for the initial stages of use. Its a 1080p room and for the most part use.264 files.

Is there a NAS you would recommend for my purposes if I am wanting to stick with QNAP or Synology? The local computer store is saying that I should stick with QNAP and the data on my previous 10TB drives can be saved as it will not need to be formatted for a new QNAP enclosure. I am not sure that I should just plug those drives into the new enclosure in case there are vulnerabilities or applications that will cause me grief. Any thoughts would be appreciated.

I ran the KODI application on my old NAS through the QTS software, but think Plex may be a better option. I will be integrating it into my Control 4 setup for the home theatre as well

4K Reolink Duo 2 Wifi Vs. Reolink Trakmix WiFi
Posted by: Enquiries - 09-22-2022, 04:30 PM - Forum: Before you buy Q&A - Replies (1)

I am looking for an outdoor 4K WiFi security camera that has a Solar Panel option. So far I have narrowed down the options to a Reolink 4K Duo 2 WiFi versus a Reolink 4K Trakmix WiFi.
I want to use a solar panel on them and maybe control them with my Windows PC with a software solution like Blue Iris or similar. Any comments or recommendations?

Thank you!

  2x nas linked
Posted by: Enquiries - 09-22-2022, 03:30 PM - Forum: Before you buy Q&A - Replies (4)

I would like to install 2 NAS solutions (on in Brighton and one in Portugal) and mirror the data (overnight). With the option to also backup the data to cloud storage.

I am looking and QNAP and Sonology. Which is best?

Use case:
We run training events in Brighton. We livestream from 2 cameras in 1080p HD to our studio in Portugal. These 2 camera feeds are recorded here locally. Late we edit the footage to create online training. We use Sandisk Extreme PRO SSD to store the footage while we edit as it is a fast drive.

I don't intend to edit from the NAS drive because it would be difficult to reach the speed.

The NAS solutions will provide mass storage for us as we are starting to film more.

I can also record in 4k locally (in Brighton) and transfer these files to the NAS - so they will sync with me in Portugal. This will allow me to easily replace the HD footage with 4K footage.

The 2 NAS will also provide a backup having the data in both locations. I may also connect to cloud storage to provide a further backup.

I am not sure on costs yet - I am guessing it may be £1,500 to £3,000 per NAS? depending on my storage needs, as this is the drives and not the NAS box I am still calculating for future expectations.

  NAS Recommendation for remote access
Posted by: Enquiries - 09-22-2022, 01:00 PM - Forum: Before you buy Q&A - Replies (1)

Dear NAS Compares!

I love your channel - you make such a grey technical subject so much fun to watch. Thank you for going to such a Herculean effort to make so much content to help others.

I’m a freelance editor and I often travel by train and live out of a bag Monday to Friday, so it’s impossible to travel with piles of hard drives in case I need a sound effect, photograph or video file. Often I realise I’ve left something desperately important at home. I think it’s time I invest in a NAS drive so that I can access my archive remotely. It would also be great to to simplify & improve my digital life into one location.

To start the process I've recently created a master 14TB drive to hopefully transfer to a NAS drive and this is a rough breakdown of what’s on it:

Master ‘my life’ Documents - 2.5 TB
Assets (SFX Library / VFX Assets etc) 3 TB
Video Archive (mainly QuickTimes of TV programmes I’ve edited) - 3 TB
Music (create an iTunes server?) - 500GB
Photograph Archive - 2.5TB
(Computer & iPhone backups - 1TB?)

CURRENT ARCHIVE TOTAL 13.5 TB

I'm based mainly on Macs at home, but often I use PC’s at work. Synology + Qnap seem to be good options to investigate. I realise it will cost money to set up, so I’ve got a budget of around £2,000 initially.

I'd like future expandability with my NAS Drive, so I think I need more than 2 bays - I don't necessarily have to fill all the bays at first (maybe 3 x 16TB initially?) but I'd like to have the option to expand when I need too.

The DS1621+ or the QNAP TS-h973AX seem interesting. Or maybe the DS1522+? Or perhaps something smaller like the DS920+ would be enough for my initial needs?

I like the idea of filling it with Seagate IronWolf Pro 16TB drives and hopefully whatever NAS I buy has good software built into it’s operating system to make life as easy as possible.

Obviously I am a video editor (mainly TV documentaries, although I do occasionally do short video promos too) but currently I haven’t planned on editing (offline / low res proxies) video off the NAS in my home studio… but I do have a mountain of hard drives, so maybe you would suggest biting the bullet to future proof my system for video use?

If so, will I need to up the RAM in the NAS, add M2 NVMe drives for caching and also update my home network speed with additional routers…? (Or at least have the ability to to do it later?)

OTHER QUESTIONS:

If I ran an iTunes Server (or similar music system) could I or my son access the music remotely?
I’m interested in running a home security system of it too.
I’d like to be able to backup my iPhone, my Mac’s and son’s tech if that is possible.
I’d like to do more music creation (yup - mid life crisis!) so can I use a NAS to store all of my music samples etc. for Reason & Logic etc?
What formatting / RAID type would you recommend for my setup?
Finally - as an extra backup - could I automatically remote backup some of my data to a service like the 10TB iDrive package as an extra safety net? Is that possible to do off Synology or Qnap NAS systems or am I forced to use expensive corporate Cloud accounts?
I don’t think I need Video Plex facilities or Video encoding but maybe I’m wrong? (I mainly use software to encode video work like Handbrake and for personal & family viewing we use Netflix / Disney + etc so I’m not sure what video Plex is something I’d ever use…)

I’m not a computer novice - I’ve used PCs since DOS days and I can roll my sleeves up when needed - but NAS seems to be so alien to me (maybe it’s the fear of loosing yet more data!!!) so it does give me a bit of a headache trying to work out what would be the best option for me. Any help and advice will be much appreciated!

With very best wishes and keep up the excellent work with your channel!

Ross
