I have two lan ports on my PC. One for my router and the other is a 10GB card directly connected to my Synology. How can I connect synology so it can get updates etc. Do I have to reconfigure.. My home network router is 10.0.0.1 gateway. My direct connect 10GB connection is on 10.10.10.10 with no gateway selected. I want the same connections to the internet as when it was all going through my router, but still get my direct 10GB connection from PC to NAS.

I am looking for your advice for my needs to store and safe keep my years of data. So far, I am at 4 TB of data I'd immediately like to back-up. I think a NAS is the best solution as I can share, up/download & edit content while away from home. I am looking at the new Synology DS1522+ running SHR 2 or RAID 6 at 8TB Seagate Ironwolf HD discs. In that configuration, 24TB usable and I'm okay with that. I'm unsure if these drives are the absolute best for me, but what do you think? Should I set up for more storage? Do I need to fill all 5 bays upon initial set up? Primarily one person accessing the device from a PC (home) and a laptop (when away from home). I don't know if I can achieve 10GBe given my router is a rented one from my ISP and my PC Motherboard has one 1GBe port. But I am open to buying a new router of my own, again. My internet is 100MBps, but effective up to 55MBps. My RAW files are huge, 60MB each and that’s when compressed, otherwise 120MB! That’s Sony A7RIV for you. Otherwise, my Nikon RAW’s weigh much less but 4K videos are the most. Fortunately, I sparingly shoot 4K and RAW uncompressed. By the way, I wouldn’t like to have my NAS on all the time. Just like my PC is on for a few hours a day, hard drives aren’t on the whole day either. There’ll be times where I’ll be taking a break from all this because of school and such.

I noticed that QNAP TS-x53D PCIe cards for NVMe SSD include heat sinks and sticky thermal pads, but Synology DS920+ just has sockets for NVME SSD with only air flow for cooling. Is this because QNAP supports use cases for SSD that go beyond caching, and thus are presumably more heat intensive? Is the Synology design safe, and if not do you recommend any specific thermal mitigation to use there? Thank you

I am writing in a hope of some advice since I experience analysis paralysis right now.

Let me describe my setup.

The data:
- Critical:
    - 1TB Raw footage from my wedding is currently only 1 copy, which is the scariest
    -  50GB Photos in Google Photos/Drive
- Important:
  - 10-20 GB Documents scattered across Google Drive/Laptop/Phone (Word, Excel, PDF, etc)
  -Nice to have:
  - 10 GB small collection of eBooks and magazines.
  - 1,5 TB of Movies/TV Shows in watch -> delete mode

Hardware:
- Mercusys Router with USB port with the ability to attach a drive
- USB 3.0 HDD reader (rather not use it as it has drive exposed, so no protection)
- NVIDIA SHIELD TV Pro 500 GB (old one) - some movies are here (Plex Media Server 1 is here)
- Laptop with 1 500MB SSDs and 1 TB SSD (full with Wedding Footage)
- Raspberry Pi 400 with 256GB SSD and 4GB RAM
- Hosted virtual private server (VPS) with 1TB (Plex Media Server 2 is here)

I am running out of space and facing a dilemma. I am on a fairly limited budget but currently have only 1 copy of critical footage that I would love to secure (ideally with the 3-2-1 principle).

I am tech savvy so not need a turnkey solution.

I am contemplating if I can have an external HDD attached to NAS/Shield/Raspberry Pi (but concerned about reliability and performance) or if I should buy a budget NAS (e.g Synology 218 + 4TB WD Red Plus).

Raspberry Pi runs all my container workloads, and Shield can act as a Transcoder, so NAS will only serve data)

I would like to lessen the reliance on cloud storage (at least to free up space for wedding footage backup) and ideally would like to phase out my VPS.

Most of the media I consume can be played via DirectPlay and I would only transcode for bandwidth reasons on my phone. VPS is not powerful enough for that, so I experience buffering. That is why I store some media on SHIELD.

Hope my use case is clear enough for you to give me a suggestion.

Hi Folks, I have 2 x use cases i am trying to cover. 1. simple backup of laptop, phone, ipad & 2. FCP video edit/back catalogue storage/recovery.

I am just about to run out of space on my rather slow 10Tb Lacie external HDD. I create quite a lot of videos and have been pretty bad at storing/cataloging my back catalogue ofvideos mainly because the external hdd is so damn slow! My camera (GH6) now regularly produces 30Gb files and footage and boy does that slow my workflow to shift from local drive to backup/archive.

Aim is to create as low latency external drive/NAS drive would be better 7 give more future (remote access) options.

I would also like to be able to create a partition to backup my macbook as i do like to refresh/Wipe and rebuild on a relatively regular basis to maximise working space/speed.

Have been thinking about using QNAP TS-h973 (32gb) as a base with 20TB hdd & like the sound of the boost provided by u.2 nvme ssd but only 1 x USB-c! surely in this day and age they'd all be USb-c (bit thats possibly a Mac view).

Im probably going to avoid the Synology due to the Gerald Undone review on the excessive fan volume. The device will live in my office which is where (in Winter) i record the vast amount of my videos. So low db is a must too.

i know there are some new whizzy devices planned for later in the year, so perhaps i should try and eak out my last few remaining Gb and wait?

I have a digital textile printing factory.

I am looking to purchase a NAS setup so I can use it to process & collect/store my digital artwork files which would be in a raw tiff format each ranging in size from 1 to 5 gb.

I currently have a 2013 Mac Mini running an Intel core i5 Ivy bridge processor with a 16GB DDR3 ram and a 2TB SSD; which I use to process my files utilising Adobe Photoshop, Illustrator & Wasatch Raster Image Processing on windows 10.

I have 3 external WD 5 TB ssd drives that are all connected to my Mac Mini USB 3.0 (5Gbps) ports, which I use to store the files for read access for printing; then I do a window share to 2 laptops that operate my digital printing machines. These laptops are connected to the modem router using 1Gbps lan connections.

Typically a 5 tb external drive has 4.54 gb available.; after extensive use, we are able to achieve proper operation when there's 500+ gb empty space, which is another 10% percent.

I have utilized/maxed out storage of all 3 external hard drives. My current router ports are full.

I would now like to get a NAS with at least 100 tb of storage for future use & maintain the basic gigabit lan connection speed, possibly using a switch, to continue providing the basic windows share with high speed storage. I don't frequently access certain files that's why I thought of getting all SSDs. What do you suggest?

I have watched the NAScompares videos & wanted to ask whether it was possible to host a VM on the NAS which I can use for my Wasatch RIP software that requires 8 gb of ram & a quad core processor.

My software requirements, from a NAS, are basic, as per the features available in current NAS systems; hence I was thinking to consider the best hardware kit which would be from the Asustor Lockster series I guess. What do you suggest?

Hello, I recently installed (thanks to your videos) a Synology 920+ and I am looking for an automatic back-up solution (software) for my Mac Studio. I have a lot of files on the Mac (primarily) photos that I want to automatically back up (or synchronize) with the NAS on a daily basis. Can you recommend a software package to do that?

I purchased an Asustor AS5202T an April. I was looking for a NAS that would support home use (docs and photos), as well as access outside the home. To date, I’ve only places limited data on the NAS in case I need to wipe clean and start over. We have a mix of IOS, MAC, Windows OS. This has been a weekend project for me. I’ve not much experience around networking but not a complete stranger either.

I’m struggling in a couple of areas. The first is connecting the NAS to a vpn when setting up a backup to iDrive. Testing with both free versions of iDrive and the vpn service as I wanted to test before I decided on either. That could be the issue and understandable.
My main frustration lay in the security changes required to help prevent malware. Choosing different ports is not a huge deal, but the issuing of certs, setting up HTTPS, and ensuring that ports are available on my ISP issued modem/router have become confusing. Not to mention that the Asustor documentation, while easy to follow, is outdated just enough that the step-by-step screens do not always reflect the current versions of the ADM. How-To youtube vids are all older and don’t help me with the changes required.

I’ve come to the point where I’m considering pulling out my drives and looking for another, more friendly for the less experienced, brand/model. I’m considering the Synology 220+ but somewhat concerned I will run into the same situation. My questions are really A) is there a source of assistance for the Asustor that I’ve not considered? And B) if I move on, what would be a good recommendation on brand and model?

Hi There, I really love your youtube channel and it helped me choose my 4 bay Qnap NAS with three 18TB drives running RAID 5.

I was wondering if there was any way to use the 4th empty bay to temporarily plug in another drive that is already formatted with NTFS and already has data on, and use it in the same way you would a drive attached to the external USB 3 port on the NAS. The NAS is insisting on reformatting it before it can be used.

The reason for the question is I wanted to take some data off some old hard drives but I no longer have a computer that has any SATA connections to connect it to. My only alternative is to buy a SATA hard drive docking station and connect it to the USB input on the NAS. But this seems a waste when I already have a bay available inside the NAS
