I have a DS220j with 2 4TB drives. It works fine. Over time i have realised its best used as a file and photo storage. Cant really play any media on it. Also can get very slow. Now I have been thinking of upgrading this. I know memory cant be upgraded. I am wondering what are my best options (while keeping the budget to bare minimum).
I have been eyeing ds220+ which seems to retail at 379CAD or a DS720+ which retails for 500 appx (but can be paid over 5 months).
I had breifly looked at ds218 too.

Any thoughts? Also if i do end up buying a new NAS , how to sell off my ds220j.

I have a DS920+ and am filling it. I started with 4 6TB drives. I have swapped 2 of them with 14TB drives running SHR. I'm fixing to buy 2 either 16TB of 18 TB drives. I was thinking about buying the DX517 and putting the old 6TB drives in it.

I read somewhere that you should NOT run the same volume over the sata cable to the DX517. Is this true?

I'm looking for some advice, I've watched several or your videos but I would prefer to have some REAL humans advice.

I bought an old TS-419P II running 4.3.3 QNAP.

So far so good, my server is running - currently in automatic IPs. My goal is to set permanently my movies with a free sofware - I'm thinking of KODI and, sometimes only, open my server to very few IRL friends to share stuff.

So here are my questions :


1) Is there any easy solution to check and switch on/off internet connection? Even it might be simple, I couldn't make sure my server is online.

Local is perfectly working though.

2) When I'll be able to tell when the server is On/Off to the web, which protocol should I use ? Again, I aim only to "open" it sometimes only.

3) As my server is startting to get old, there are many apps I can't have. So far I still manage to play HD movies by my TV BOx with the VLC app very easily with absolute no lag. I would like to keep that way, what is the best protocol you would advise in such case? I've read UPnP and DLNA are the lighter ways to stream but also the more "dangerous"? How would you build this?

4) And finally, do you think Kodi is the best free and light app to play movies from my QnAP?

I've been looking at getting a synology NAS for my home. I have no idea where to start.

4 security cameras (eufy)

Possibly run a plex server
Back up devices
Music storage
General back ups.

I bought a TS-451 about 5 years ago and added 1x4TB drives to it in JBOD. i followed this up with 2 subsequent 4TB and then an 8TB. 2 years ago the NAS died(?) and I replaced it with a TS-453D and just switched the HDDs over (no issues there luckily) I have since added a TR004 expansion and a 16TB (my 1st non-WD drive, a Seagate Ironwolf).

My issue is that I am a long way down the rabbit hole, in terms of not having any form of RAID, I do have backup with iDrive, but even that could do with a "tidy-up".

i'd like to know my most pain-free route to getting RAID added to my system - I know my way around a PC BUT ssh and anything smacking of "coding" gives me hives. I seem to have "aged out" of tinkering.

My current thinking is to buy a second NAS (possibly a cheap TS-451D2, set it up using one of your guides and then move my files over. This will obviously need a lot of hardware - I would like an SSD for my primary drive, for running Roon, etc. - and I will need sufficient storage to house the 16TB that is currently on there. The 16TB on has 5ish TB and I could likely move that between the others and a couple unused 2TB so that the 16 could go into the new NAS.

My hope would be to set up the new NAS as well as poss. and then transfer the drives to the 453D, maybe keeping the 451 set up elsewhere and an additional network backup for the crucial stuff?

i didn't like to ask this on the QNAP forum, they all seem a bit to clued up to give me the patience that I suspect that I will need.

Let me first say I’m hugely appreciative of the YouTube channel :-)

Query: I have become confused about whether to consider UREs, and risk of RAID rebuild failure, when planning a home NAS build. I'm sure you're aware of the maths on chance of encountering a URE during a rebuild circulating on various forums, leading to calculators like this:

Considering a WD Red Plus (1 in 10^14) URE rate, and a 4 x 4TB RAID 5, this suggest a rebuild may have less than 50% chance of succeeding should a drive fail.

Where as using IronWolf (1 in 10^15) URE implies the equivalent NAS has >90% chance of rebuilding following a disk failure.

This is a dramatic difference in my view since one is tolerable and the other is not. This also implies that large (12+ TB) disks in something like a DS920 under RAID 5 are not a good idea. This can also guide one towards 8 (RAID 6) bays unit but obviously at higher cost.

I’d love to know if you have an opinion on using these calculation to determine a NAS build. I appreciate RAID 6 will always be more reliable than RAID 5, and obviously lower URE chance is always a good thing, but I’m concerned that these seemingly objective probabilities are potentially way off (these are URE limits afterall so they may be much lower I suppose in reality) and about letting them unduly influence a build decision. Ie give an impression that increased cost (eg from 4 x 8TB to 8 x 4TB unit) is buying more reliability than it actually is. As I say, these calcs dont seem to stack up with what people are doing in reality. Do you think the URE risk should be ignored?

Also, did you every cover this discussion - that seems to go back and forth in forums - in one of your (excellent) videos?

I have tried installing Plex but when I launch Plex I keep getting Not Authorized when launching Plex. I verified Plex Media Server account has read and write access.  Can you assist?

I currently use 1TB Netgear ReadyNAS bought in 2013 and it's running fine, though I get complaints from Roon at times saying it can't stream music from the device.

I use the NAS as a repository for backups of my main computer, for backups of two web-sites (which are now largely static and don't change) and for storing photos and music. The music I now stream from a dedicated Roon Core running on a micro computer.

I use the NAS to create accounts for the two users in the house, with their own storage areas. I don't host a mail service nor a web server nor any outward facing services.

ReadyNAS stopped updates some time ago so I'm feeling it's about time to upgrade and any advice you can give would be much appreciated. My current thinking is that I perhaps only need two bays perhaps with 2TB each for basic Raid functionality. I had been thinking the Synology DS220j or the QNAP TS-231P3.
