For the moment I use my old PC working as a TrueNAS server. My needs: backup (I use Acronis) for total 4-6 TB of data, VPN server, Gitlab CE. For tests I've installed NextCloud and Jenkins. So - nothing special. However I'm working as a developer (desktop applications) and maybe I'll use it for VMs - for the moment I work with VMware Workstation Pro. But the main problem is I'm also a composer and work with really large audio libraries. Now my PC has NVMe drive for a system, and 7 TB of audio libraries on 5 SSD drives. Because audio libraries are working with streaming technology they need fast access time to many small files and good transfer rate. So the question is: if any of NAS solutions is good enough for audio libraries. Streaming one single file (like in video) is not a problem, but reading many streams with small audio us crucial. I'm not sure if DS155+ from Synology or new TS664 from Qnap are fast enough when used in RAID5 and standard HDDs or even SSDs for such purposes. I'm gonna change my PC to a new one with 2.5 Gb ethernet or even 10 Gb if required but I'm not sure about these two NAS servers 664/1522+. Could you compare them when used for reading a lot of small files?

Hello Rob!
I hope you are doing well! I've been binge watching your videos on YouTube for the past week gathering info on NAS's and NAS technology. Firstly, I would like to thank you for all your consistent hard work and dedication to this part of the IT field! So, you've probably seen incredibly cheap, generic drives on the internet from sites like eBay. My apologies if you've addressed this before. Here's a link to an example of one of these cheap drives:
https://www.amazon.com/MaxDigitalData-Internal-Network-Storage-MD8000GSA25672NAS/dp/B097CY9Z6G/
Could you possibly check out these types of drives and do a post or video on them? I'm sure this will help many others as well as me. Looking forward to your response.
Best,
Jeremy

Hi,
Love your content. It has helped me immensely throughout my NAS journey.
I am scaling a social media content agency and am looking for a NAS solution. Even though I have done a lot of research, I am still unsure of whether we should buy a NAS that we can do editorial work directly off of, or if we should get a NAS that is for archiving, sharing, and searching through videos content. It's fairly common for me to dig through previous hard drive, transfer old footage to my MacBook, create content from it, and re-archive it on the same external hard drive. If we bought a NAS editors could edit off of directly, it would make it easier to edit old content since we wouldn't need to do that back and forth between the archive storage and the editing station storage. Though we will have editors working remote, so maybe it's best to keep things simple and use the NAS solely for archiving and sharing. I'd love your opinion and would be happy to provide further clarity on the company's current circumstances so we can spec out an optimal solution.
Current best guess solution:
DS1821+ 8-Bay = $1.000
16tb IronWolf: 3x$300 = $900
Samsung 970 EVO Plus SSD 1TB NVMe M.2: 2x$110 = $220
PCIe 10GbE Expansion Card = $140
Sonnet Solo 10G Thunderbolt 3 to SFP+ 10 Gigabit Ethernet Adapter (SFP+ [SR] Included) = ~$350
UPS Battery = $200
Do you think this would be sufficient for a small video production / social media content agency? Really appreciate your help

| Synology 723+ and 923+ able to playback surveillance station? |

With all of your assessments of the new AMD processor in the new 723+ and 923+ systems (and 1522), the big item has been the plex server for playback. but what I'm thinking of, is if I don't use plex, but I do use surveillance station because it happens to come with the NAS, then should I be looking at the 720+ and 920+ models in order to functionally view the playback from it? If I'm going to use surveillance station, I'd want the best quality video so it's actually usable if something were to happen, so if I'm recording 4k and using H.265 encoding to save space, would I then not be able to playback any videos even if I was notified of activity? This might be something testable with the 1522 you have like with your plex test video. I just think it's a second significant application that may no longer function. or perhaps it has other capabilities/features and isn't so bad. I'd love to hear your thoughts or experiences with this.
