NAS for file server

I am looking for a reasonably priced NAS that will be used as a file server/storage device. Maybe a handful of machine images as well, but mainly file server type use for our church.
I recently installed a QNAP TS-451D2-4G 4 Bay
I've always used QNAP stuff, so is this the best use of our money for this situation?
Thanks,
Craig

QNAP NAS TS-464-4G RAM upgrade

- Want to upgrade RAM on QNAP NAS TS-464-4G, just bought.
- QNAS info on compatible RAM type is cryptically "SODIMM DDR4". That's it!
- An Amazon user question response: buy DDR4 2666Mhz CL19 PC4-21000 260-Pin SODIMM RAM.
My question to ensure the RAM is compatible:
- how specific do I have to be in choosing RAM type given the above 2 vastly different RAM descriptions
- does it matter if it says "for laptop" or "for Synology NAS", or doesn't specify that it's for a NAS? THANKS!

Choosing a NAS for video editing

Hi there,
Thanks so much for all your brilliant work.
I'm looking to buy a NAS for editing 4K footage, with lots of video and audio effects laid on.
I'm using a 2019 27" iMac, which was fully specced at the time and has Thunderbolt 3 but no 10gbe. That got me thinking about a QNAP Thunderbolt NAS like the TVS-872XT or the TVS-672XT But I just saw your videos talking about the updated versions, the TVS-h874 or TVS-h674. These are not Thunderbolt, but would you recommend using ethernet instead, with an adapter from my Thunderbolt port in my case?
I know that you've recommended an 8-bay NAS for video editing. Is that still the case, given the 22 TB drives and extension units available? And the new PCle V4 for speed? I'm not sure that my budget stretches to the 8-bay version. How much better would it be? Would you recommend the TVS-h674 (i3) in my case? Or the TVS-872XT when it goes on sale? Lastly, thoughts on the Terramaster T12-450 for 4K video editing?
Thanks heaps!

Hi, i'm trying to make my mind between Qnap and Synology. especially the TS 464 and the ds923+. Is the security against ransomware better with Synology than Qnap. You told about Qnap but i found nothing about Synology... What do you thing, taking into account that i take this seriously, but i know that nothing is unbreakable...
Thanks for reading.
Best regards.

Replacement NAS

Hi, this is mainly a personal NAS for myself and my partner. Don't really run a lot of media (tend to stream) but we can amass a large amount of photos, videos, and larger imaging from medical sources. I've been using it mainly to back up the computers (WD MyCloud) but it just died, and the potential loss has me worried. So looking for simple, Mac friendly, NAS replacement, to run RAID5 (I assume 4 slot), and preferably set and forget. I've been looking at the Synology DS420+, DS920+ and DS923+ but would appreciate your thoughts. Thanks

Some media not playing or even showing in any player

Hi, first off, thank you for your channel! I have a DS920+ hooked up to a Nvidia Shield 2017. I was very happy with this setup until a recent update, both the shield and DSM. My problem is that suddenly my setup will not play certain movie formats. Prior to the issue appearing I was able to play everything I downloaded regardless of the format or container. However after whatever happened many will not even show up in any of the video players. I can play them through VLC on my computer so I know it's not the file. I've tried Plex, Kodi, Media Station, Embry, and VLC on the shield. I'm lost as I really do not know what caused it due to at least two updates at the same time. I do not believe it's the shield as no reports of the issue have appeared on their forums. I suspect it has something to do with the advanced media extensions. Do you have any idea what the issue may be? Thanks!

PS5 - thermal pad between SN850 with heatsink and metal cover

With a PS5, is it advisable to put a thermal pad in between the WD SN850 with heatsink and the the metal SSD cover? Is there any thermal benefit? If so, would it be better to modify the PNY XLR8 SSD cover and use it?
I know this is not about a NAS, but after watching multiple videos from NASCompares on Youtube about upgrading the PS5 SSD and using different heatsinks, I figured if anyone would know the answer, it would be him.

Terramaster only RAM

I am disappointed to learn that Terramaster only allows there own brand RAM, I was about to click buy on amazon until I read a review about TOS5 only allows you to use there own branded RAM that'd priced way way expensive compared to other manufacturers. So disappointed in there decision to go this way.
I recently found your YouTube channel and can not stop watching it (I hate seaguls) lol..
You're presentation and you're knowledge is 2nd to none , I am enjoying you're content
Do you know if Terramaster will be keeping to its policy of locking in RAM to there own brand? It will put alot of customers off buying.
Sorry for spelling mistakes, I am on my phone

Hi, I currently have a DS220+ with 2x10tb in raid 0. I just bought a DS920+ to have the possibiliy to have data protection and have big storage as well.
I got a couple of questions, I asked online but I get different answers everytime so i'm asking you because I know youre a pro with NAS.
1. Can I transfer my drives from my ds220 to my ds920 while changing the raid?
2. What type of raid should I choose SHR or RAID5 for the new nas. I want to get the most speed while having the possibility of 1 drive failing.
3. Can I buy another 10tb drive (total drives 3) and install the new NAS with RAID5 and after a couple months upgrade with another 10tb (total drives 4) without having to reset the NAS?
