  Extending drives with asm1166/jmb585
Posted by: JajajTec - 12-20-2022, 11:53 PM - Forum: Technical Support - Replies (2)

Hi!
I Have been asking myself if it is possible to extend a DS (1522+/1821+/whatever in that range) with a pcie sata extension chip like asm1166 (probably the more fitting one) or jmb585. Because if yes, you could theoretically just put one of these into the pci slot and then route the sata into a drive-case.
Can anybody having a DS with pcie maybe test it?
It would be just to good to be true… and why has pretty much noone talked about this before? Because with the asm1166 you could theoretically extend a ds1621+ with 36 drives or even up to 108 DRIVES if you really wanna go bonk and own a soldering iron…

Hope i have written that correctly…

  DS920+ DS923+
Posted by: VACowboy - 12-20-2022, 11:27 PM - Forum: Before you buy Q&A - Replies (1)

Good evening,

I am seriously considering the DS923+ but then I started reading/hearing about the difference in the processors between the two devices.  As I understand it, the Rysen chip on the 923+ does not have an onboard GPU and therefore cannot perform hardware encoding on the chip.

Will someone explain to me the real world significance of this?

My NAS needs are:

1.  Backups - as part of a 3-2-1 backup solution.
2.  Multimedia - moving some DVDs/Blu-Rays to the NAS after ripping.
3.  Virtual Machines - Windows 10/11, Kali Linux.

Thank you for your time and consideration.

Hi, just wondering if you have any insight on when the new 6 and 8 bay models may be released. I need to upgrade but am wondering if I should hold off since the current ones have been out a while now. Thanks.

  Coral USB TPU
Posted by: Enquiries - 12-20-2022, 02:00 PM - Forum: Before you buy Q&A - Replies (1)

dearest NASCompares,

I have my QNAP 646 and mostly it is used for Plex, Photo Archive and personal storage. i have 100,00 + photos of my family and i was wondering what is the effect of Coral TPU on face and object recognition? is it only faster processing or would buying one of those doungles actually get me more accurate results (similar to google photos level)? i would like to hear your personal experience with that USB doungle to decide if its worth buying or not

entry-level NAS drive for home use
Posted by: Enquiries - 12-20-2022, 01:00 PM - Forum: Before you buy Q&A - Replies (2)

Can you recommend an entry-level NAS drive fitted with SSD, for storing mainly music CDs (connected to Sonos system) and mainly text documents?
I find that most if not all suppliers direct me to HDDs, which I don't want.
Many thanks

  Which Synology NAS
Posted by: Enquiries - 12-20-2022, 03:30 AM - Forum: Before you buy Q&A - Replies (1)

Hello, I want to purchase Synology nas because their software is easier to use than Qnap. I will use it to back up four computers, files sharing, and photo editing in Adobe Lightroom. I will be using it for storing my video file. I will not be editing the video from the NAS. I will be streaming music and movie at home and away. I record a lot of HD and 4K videos. I am planning on using Plex Media. I also like to play around with Virtual Machines and Docker containers. My thinking is to purchase the ds720+ for my music and movies and a 1621+ for everything else. What do you guys think?

720+ or 723+ for longer security updates?
Posted by: Enquiries - 12-19-2022, 12:30 PM - Forum: Before you buy Q&A - Replies (2)

Hi there, I'm happy with my DS212+ for like 10 years now. As this reaches "end of life", I'm struggling whether to buy 720+ now or wait for 723+. Main difference for me would probably their expected "end of lifetime" in terms of security updates - I'd love to use the new machine again for like 10 years.
Would you expect 723+ to get 10 years from now and 720+ only 7 years from now (as it was released three years earlier) or is it only 10 vs 9 years as 720+ was sold till this year?
Another issue is TDP, what difference would you expect for a low-usage profile (checking for mails once a minute, file server, a backup once a day)?
Thx

New Seagate Game Drive M2 SSD for PS5
Posted by: Enquiries - 12-19-2022, 12:00 PM - Forum: Before you buy Q&A - Replies (1)

Hello,

I've just discovered that Seagate is offering a special PS5 version of the Firecuda 530. Here is a link to the product.

https://www.seagate.com/products/gaming-drives/playstation-gaming/game-drive-m2-ssd-for-ps5/

Basically it seems that this PS5 version and the Firecuda 530 are technically identical, besides the heatsink design. But this version has an optimized firmware for the PS5.

Do you have any information if this results in higher speeds or have you maybe already compared how both versions perform in a PS5?

Many thanks,
Hardy

I’m home owner who currently uses eufy security cameras. But recently I’ve seen videos stating how unsecured they are. I’m now trying to figure out the best setup for nas security. I’m interested in Synology or similar. Would like the models and cameras to go with it to include Door locks and doorbell
