Upgrading from 2 to 4 Bay NAS
Posted by: Enquiries - 12-23-2022, 01:00 PM - Forum: Before you buy Q&A - Replies (1)

Looking to upgrade to a 4 bay NAS, currently operating QNAP 251 2 bay (2016/17 model) with 2x 3TB drives and out of room.

Okay with QTS but concerned about security vulnerabilities of QNAP, 251 was a victim of ransomware attack. Fortunately able to recover and now more secure.

Evaluating DS920+/923+ and QNAP 464 and looking for something that will be good for awhile. Ideal case would be able to make use of the older drives (WD Red). New drives are 12TB Seagate Iron Wolf.

Thanks,
Mike Ansley

New NAS for Mac Studio (QNAP TS-664-4G)
Posted by: Enquiries - 12-23-2022, 09:00 AM - Forum: Before you buy Q&A - Replies (1)

Hello,
I need to upgrade my workstation to edit videos. I edit 4K videos in 10 bit with Davinci Resolve as a freelancer. I use colorgrading and animations in my edits. For this case I am thinking of buying a Mac Studio with M1 Max. For storage, I'm currently planning to go with the QNAP TS-664-4G, which I plan to equip with the QNAP QXG-10G1TB. I also want to increase the RAM memory to 8GB. For hard drives I will use 6 x 8 TB WD Red Pro and 2 x 2 TB WD Black SN750 NVMe SSD M.2 2280 (I already own these). I want to use a Netgear GS110EMX for the fastest possible connection between MAC and NAS. Can I efficiently edit the videos with this configuration if the material is completely stored on the NAS? And how do I find out exactly what RAM is installed in the NAS (there are 2 4GB upgrades to choose from)? Thanks a lot for your help!

Many greetings from Germany
Thim

QTier or SSD Cache or Nothing?
Posted by: Enquiries - 12-23-2022, 04:00 AM - Forum: Before you buy Q&A - Replies (1)

I'm considering putting m2 modules in my 453E and using Qtier.

I have 4 HD Red Plus drives (4tb each) in a raid 10 and my network is all 2.5gbe.

The NAS itself is used for a variety of uses:
Small documents read occasionally.
Some database access.
Occasional libre office container
Media from small photos to 4k movies.

I was hoping Qtier would give me some more space and speed. The more I read the more I'm confused Smile.

Does Qtier make sense?
Is Caching better?
Should I just pass on it all?
What is the best M2.nvme's to pick up for this NAS?

  Nas but maybe a DAS
Posted by: Enquiries - 12-22-2022, 09:00 PM - Forum: Before you buy Q&A - Replies (1)

Hello Friends,

I have a drobo 5c and would like to move on from it. I would like a DAS but fine with a NAS, i would like it to be 5 or more bays, honestly would like 10 or more to put all my new drives and old drobo drives in it. I saw terramaster has some das but only 5 bays, i would like not to buy two with separate drives but can if needed. I like the t9-423 but not sure how power hungry it maybe. I'm just looking for a good system to store my data and have a good raid system. My goal is use it for data storage with good raid/software to not worry about. What do you suggest? I'm open to any suggestions or solutions. Thank you very much for your time and support, appreciate the amazing channel! Have a good break and rest well!

  NAS (which one to buy)
Posted by: monzurahmed - 12-22-2022, 08:09 PM - Forum: Before you buy Q&A - Replies (1)

Hi Everyone,

I have just joined the Forum and needed some expert advice from you guys.

I am looking for a NAS System for watching my collection of 4K and 1080P Movies, I will add other stuff as I get up and running.

I have been watching numerous Videos on You Tube by Robbie, and they are very good and very informative.

I have just ordered 6 x WD Gold 14TB from Ebuyer for £239.99 each.

After watching numerous videos I am looking the following: -

Synology

DS1621+

DS620slim

QNAP

TS-673A-8G

TVS-675

TS-653D-8G

I would grateful for any suggestions and any advice.

Many Thanks

  Multiple Volumes
Posted by: Enquiries - 12-22-2022, 07:00 PM - Forum: Before you buy Q&A - Replies (1)

Hi Guys, I really enjoyed your Synology Setup Videos. I have a few questions. I have the Synology DS220+ with 2 6TB Drives for a POC. My intended usage will be for PC Backup, Document, photo and video storage and as a media server (movies) as well as for surveillance storage. I move it between the house and Caravan for extended periods of time. Surveillance will of the installed NAS location maybe both if internet is available. There will be extended times without (Boondocking). I was going to use PLEX, but your video says it requires the internet. I have LANs in both the house and the caravan. I plan on using it in Raid 1 configuration.
Q1: What is your recommendation for a Media server app that does not require Internet. Q2: Should I have multiple volumes? 1 for surveillance storage and 1 for everything else? Q3: Will multiple volumes require duplication of software?
Thanks.

Looking for the best nas solution
Posted by: Enquiries - 12-22-2022, 12:00 PM - Forum: Before you buy Q&A - Replies (1)

Hey Guys,

Thanks so much for making this service available for free, it’s uncanny we are a team of 2 filmmakers and we are looking to upgrade to a storage solution that we could edit from and also plug to Blackmagic cloud via their cloud pod. The solution would also be our main storage for backups. We hope to spend something like 5000€ but our budget is flexible if there is a truly outstanding system for a bit higher price. We have no knowledge but we can learn fast as we are tech dudes on other subjects !

We were thinking 6/8 bay and 2x Thunderbolt 3 to our m1max MacBook Pros (2022)

Thanks again, looking forward to hear from you !

  5400 v 7200 worth it over 10GBe
Posted by: Enquiries - 12-22-2022, 07:30 AM - Forum: Before you buy Q&A - Replies (1)

The typical bundle deals are DS1522 w/ Seagate IW 5900rpm (5x 4TB)... would I see a drastic improvement if a chose IW Pro 7200rpm... I'd use 10GBe directly connected to my iMac w/ 10GBe port... I'd be upgrading a DS1512 with 3TB Barracuda's <yea I know, but it was 10y ago!)... THANKS for the great site and YouTube vids! Sorry if I did miss you guys doing something with 5400/5900 drives... - I would be utilizing SHR1 or 2 / RAID 5 or 6...

  NAS Selection
Posted by: Enquiries - 12-21-2022, 10:30 PM - Forum: Before you buy Q&A - Replies (1)

Am considering Synology RS1619 vs. cheaper alternatives such as QNAP. Integrated backup is critical; I use iDrive now to back up a home-brew FreeNAS device which is at capacity and becoming unreliable.
