Replacement NAS - Enquiries - 01-23-2023

Hi, this is mainly a personal NAS for myself and my partner. Don't really run a lot of media (tend to stream) but we can amass a large amount of photos, videos, and larger imaging from medical sources. I've been using it mainly to back up the computers (WD MyCloud) but it just died, and the potential loss has me worried. So looking for simple, Mac friendly, NAS replacement, to run RAID5 (I assume 4 slot), and preferably set and forget. I've been looking at the Synology DS420+, DS920+ and DS923+ but would appreciate your thoughts. Thanks

You are correct that the DS420+ and DS920+ both have built-in transcoding capabilities, which allows you to convert videos on the fly to a format that is compatible with your device, without the need for a separate media player. This feature is particularly useful if you have a lot of media files that you want to stream to different devices with varying capabilities.

The DS923+ is a more powerful option, it includes support for 10 GbE connection and NVMe volumes, which provide faster data transfer speeds, better performance and faster access to data. This model is a better option for businesses, professional photographers, and video editors who require high-performance storage.

In summary, if you are looking for a simple and cost-effective NAS for your personal use with Mac-friendly and set and forget, the DS420+ and DS920+ are great options that come with transcoding feature and other features like data replication. But if you need more performance, 10 GbE connection, and NVMe volumes, the DS923+ is the best choice.
