  QNAP Extended Warranty
Posted by: Enquiries - 05-01-2023, 10:00 PM - Forum: Before you buy Q&A - Replies (1)

I just purchased a QNAP TVS-874. Do you think it worth paying an $600 for an additional 2 years (5 total) on warranty. I typically never pay for service plans on anything.

Thanks and take care.

  Which NAS for home rack
Posted by: Enquiries - 05-01-2023, 07:30 PM - Forum: Before you buy Q&A - Replies (2)

Thanks for the opportunity to ask a few questions and get some advice

Recently moved into a new home and I have fitted a wall rack to my office.

I have run CAT6 cables to various rooms (mainly 2 runs behind every TV), and terminated them in wall plates.

Have a UNIFI setup with a UDM SE in my rack and an XG 24 switch (arriving this week).

I also have an old QNAP TS-453A just sat at bottom of my rack, with 3 x 4Tb drives in which I currently just use for storage.

I am unsure what exactly to be looking at but a rackmount NAS would fit in nice to my setup.

I would want to take advantage of a great throughput from NAS to various devices and I want to be able to get PLEX setup and streaming from it.

All my TVs are wall mounted and 4k native resolution.

I hope thats no too brief an outline

10GBe , PLEX , hardware decoding , NVMe slots (Gen ??) , data backup/storage

Cheers
Steve

  TVS-872XT

Do you still recommend the Qnap TVS-872XT or the Synology 1821+? Or have better 8 Bay systems come out in recent months?

  Asustor AS-U2.5G
Posted by: Enquiries - 05-01-2023, 01:00 PM - Forum: Before you buy Q&A - Replies (1)

Hi,
Will the Asustor AS-U2.5G enable me to connect my laptop to an Asustor Drivestor 2 (AS1102T), and then directly transfer data from the laptop to the NAS (and vice versa) without an internet connection.
Thank you.
Regards.

Overwhelmed as to what to choose
Posted by: Enquiries - 05-01-2023, 02:30 AM - Forum: Before you buy Q&A - Replies (1)

I have watched sooo many of your videos and my head is spinning. I just don't know what to buy. Meanwhile the WD MyBooks keep piling up. I came very close to pulling the trigger on a QNAP TVS-H874 a while back but that's a lot of money to spend when you don't know for sure that your making the right choice. I shoot weddings photo and video, as well as the occasional music video. I have a M1 MacBook Pro, but as you know apple charges BIG bucks for a decent size HD. So I need a storage system that I can edit from. Do I need a NAS with thunderbolt 3 or 4? IDK, I like quite so I want to put the NAS in another room if possible and I don't know if that rules out thunderbolt. I need redundancy, speed, and quietness. I have the money to get a $3-$4000 system if I need that, but I don't want to waste money either. I also don't want to have to replace it anytime soon. I have a WD PR-4100 I bought a couple years ago so the QNAP security issue scares me a little. Please Help! Thanks! ~ JB

Seagate EXOS X18 18TB, REAL world experience RMA, Warranty, MTBF
Posted by: Enquiries - 04-30-2023, 08:30 PM - Forum: Before you buy Q&A - Replies (1)

Hi,

I have a 8 bay Synology DS1813+ NAS. Served me VERY well over the years since purchase.

Previously upgraded the same NAS with 8 drives over the years, from 4TB (started throwing up bad sectors) to the current 8TB drives.

Currently running RAID 6, 7 x 8TB Iron Wolf + 500GB ssd cache drive running for nearly 5 years ish.

Recently 2 drives started throwing up bad sectors, so decided it was time for an upgrade...

I didn't want the same performance bottleneck limitation I had with the OLD Synology (NO 10GB, POOR transcoding media on plex) So decided to Upgrade to the QNAP TS-2483XU-RP.

I wanted to know what the EXOS X18 18T Drive warranty is like (I heard bad reviews of the EXOS X14).

X18 drives are expensive and knowing what the REAL WORLD experience of their warranty, RMA, MTF rates TRUELY are, would help me tremendously on making a better informed decision on my raid configuration across the expansion slots of the NEW 24 Bay NAS.

Many thanks in advance.

  Best Client Backup.

Love your YouTube channel and website. I’m trying to decide between Synology and QNAP products. Which do you believe offers the best network client backup in a mixed environment of Mac and windows machines. Many thanks.

Request advice for buying a NAS
Posted by: Enquiries - 04-30-2023, 11:00 AM - Forum: Before you buy Q&A - Replies (1)

Dear Nas-guys,
We want to ask you advice about which NAS system we should buy. We are looking for a system which our android devices and windows computers can securely access from the internet and our home network. Preferably through some transparant special folder or drive-letter. We will be using the NAS for storing documents, music, short videos and photographs (we are passionate photographers). We want a system that can provide us with a means of backup to be safe for disk or device failure and hackers who take data hostage. Easy to manage and expand. We expect to produce about 0.5 TB/year.
With all the brands, drives etc. we can't see the forest for the trees anymore and we hope you could help us.
