Upgrade MR2200AC to SRM 1.3.1-9346 (from SRM 1.2.5-8227 Update 8)
Posted by: Enquiries - 05-03-2023, 09:00 PM - Forum: Before you buy Q&A - Replies (1)

Dear NAS Compares, I have a synology MR2200AC router, and a second MR2200AC connected as a mesh router. CONTROL PANEL--SYSTEM indicates that my SRM version is SRM 1.2.5-8227 Update 8, and that my "SRM version is up-to-date". I think I can manually update the router by going to synology Download Center (https://www.synology.com/en-global/support/download/MR2200ac?version=1.3#system), and installing two patches to get the 1.3.1-9346 upgrade. I see how to do this for the main router by going into CONTROL PANEL--SYSTEM--MANUAL SRM Update. I assume that both the main router and the second/mesh router need to be running the same SRM. How to I updated the second/mesh router to SRM 1.3.1-9346...? Thanks in advance for any help that you can provide... James

  12tb Ironwolf pro or 12tb WD Red+ ??
Posted by: Enquiries - 05-03-2023, 01:30 PM - Forum: Before you buy Q&A - Replies (1)

Desperate for help on selecting 4 hard drives to go into new Synology DS 423+ NAS. The Ironwolf Pro ST12000NE0008 seems to be the best option? Noise is a factor but obviously not as important as reliability. WD Red plus WD120EFBX seems like a valid alternative? Many thanks in advance for your help.

  low-budget home nas
Posted by: Enquiries - 05-03-2023, 01:30 PM - Forum: Before you buy Q&A - Replies (1)

Hi, I'm looking for a 2-bay NAS for home. The main applications would be photos/videos storage, Android gallery backup, PC backup, modest streaming via Plex (1080p max for a while), modest torrent download. I'd install 2 pieces of 4TB HDDs in RAID1 for redundancy. I was looking at QNAP TS-233 and looking at this price range or a little above. I'm a little worried its hardware wont be enough. I watched the Terramaster F2-423 review and I like it but it's just tad more than I wish to pay. I found the F2-223 quite promising as it's a little cheaper than the F2-423 with really good specs. I'm just not sure about TM's software side. I saw the TOS5 is slightly getting better but I'd like good experience and usable android app for photo backup. Would you still recommend TM, QNAP or something else? Do you plan to review the mentioned T2-223? Hope I was clear enough. Thank You in advance!

Is it possible to have two more drives of higher capacity in my Terramaster F5-221
Posted by: Enquiries - 05-03-2023, 10:30 AM - Forum: Before you buy Q&A - Replies (1)

I have subscribed to your channel for nearly 2 years and bought a TerraMaster F5-221. with two Seagate IronWolf 10TB NAS Hard Drives and I think I have set it up as Raid 1.
Being a newbie to NAS I thought that I would be able to add more storage as and when I needed it, I save Old Time Radio Broadcasts and have a collection dating back to 1920’s. I now have only 5% left and I wish to increase my storage. Can I add 2 x 14Tb NAS drives on top of the ones I have? Or will I lose my data from the original setup?

  HDD setups
Posted by: Enquiries - 05-03-2023, 05:00 AM - Forum: Before you buy Q&A - Replies (1)

I've been using a DS1513+, DS1515+ and a DS3018xs over the last few years, I absolutely love them, the DS3018xs is for Plex , it’s ok for normal stuff up to 1080p, but no good for 4k.

I have a question regarding HDD setup on my new setup I am going to purchase soon.
I am looking at the following Synology setup:
Either a DS3622xs+ or a DS1823xs+ (I’ll put in an extra 8gb memory)
One 2TB ssd drive as Pool 1 (to be used for DSM and applications)
Four 14TB drives as Pool 2 using SHR (for storing all movies/TV shows, expanding as I need).
Two 1TB M.2 drives for Cache

I’m not sure if my thinking of putting DSM on a separate SSD is viable or not, I’m hoping it would give Plex a nice big jump in performance.
I was hoping Synology would have something similar in performance to the QNAP H874.
Unfortunately, I really love the Synology products I have so I’d like to stay with them, I just can’t find a beefy system like the QNAP….he says with a tear in his eye.
Thanks

  B&H USA prices
Posted by: Enquiries - 05-02-2023, 09:30 PM - Forum: Before you buy Q&A - Replies (1)

Greetings guys, many thanks for your vlogs/inputs. I saw B&H in USA on your website. Apart from shipping charges, could you guide me about UK duty charges for NAS items....in some sort of 'ballpark' (withoutseagulls) estimate?

Cheers,

Iain.

WD My Book Duo full, need serious NAS for future proofing
Posted by: Enquiries - 05-02-2023, 09:00 PM - Forum: Before you buy Q&A - Replies (1)

Loving the YT videos. Discovered your channel this evening after searching for a NAS solution.

My current setup (WD Mybook 12TB (6TB mirrored) is nearly full. It houses all my RAW files from the last 6 years.

As I understand it, I am leaning towards a Synology DS923+ and want to fill it as much as I can afford. Possibly Ironwolf 8TBs (not pro) equalling 32TB total.

My understanding is that I should use RAID5 to make one of the drives as a protection drive leaving me with 24TB of actual storage.
Is RAID5 a good approach for my work?

I'm not the most complicated use case, simply need safe storage for my work that I can access easily. Up until now, it has been the My Book Duo which I then back up onto 2 other external HDs for peace of mind. I would like a NAS as (if I am correct) it will offer me a redundancy if one drive failed.
I'm only just learning this NAS work and so there's a lot of info, if you can advise that would be amazing.
Thanks so much
Gareth

  Fan not working
Posted by: Enquiries - 05-02-2023, 03:00 AM - Forum: Before you buy Q&A - Replies (1)

Very thanks for this article. I just practically purchase my DS220+ and as matter of fact I was very happy with it. the problem, It started to power off without apparent reason. As I am new to NAS technology and, of course, Synology, I thought there was a problem with some configuration. I did find the fan part and even thought I set it to full speed, it keep shutting down. Today, I found the real problem, the fan doesn't work at all. I wanted to check if there was an internal disconnection but started to have some troubles to open it up. Thanks to your article, I notice it was connected so, I am now starting a warranty claim. It's a shame because it is only 1 month old.
Regards.

  Synology Memory
Posted by: Enquiries - 05-02-2023, 12:30 AM - Forum: Before you buy Q&A - Replies (1)

Rob,

This statement is from https://www.synology.com/en-us/products/DDR4

"Synology DDR4 Memory Module
Always select authentic Synology memory modules from local distributors for optimum compatibility and reliability."

This part "for optimum compatibility and reliability" seems to be just hype as I cannot find anything that shows they actually can prove that claim. Are you aware of their testing that proves their memory is actually more reliable?

Just watching/reading your video on using unofficial memory in the DS923+. Great stuff as always.

  Looking for a UPS
Posted by: Enquiries - 05-01-2023, 10:30 PM - Forum: Before you buy Q&A - Replies (1)

Hey there!
I have a DS920+ with 4 WD RED PLUS 14GB HDD and lately I have been suffering from short power outages in my area.

I have decided to buy a UPS and I was wondering if you could give me some advice!

My main concern here is the budget, I don't to connect everything to the UPS, just the NAS - connecting the router is a bonus. Ideally, I want something cheap that is compatible with my DS920 (I read something about the NAS switching to a "Safe mode" if it detects the UPS is running out of battery).

Thanks in advance for your help!
