  First NAS sti
Posted by: Enquiries - 05-05-2023, 10:30 AM - Forum: Before you buy Q&A - Replies (1)

My first foray into NAS
I'm looking for a quiet NAS with storage to accommodate 3 PC backups. Also to use as a Plex server. Eventually to store surveillance camera video, plus store about 400GB photos and 1TB of video. 2.5 GbE network connectivity and integrated graphics required. My initial stab at 12TB may be over the top. I like to think I'm computer literate, I was an IT performance tester for many years, now retired. I'm leaning towards a 4 bay Qnap, Synology will also do, is this a good choice and how much storage and what RAID would you recommend? Thank you.

  NAS for photos
Posted by: Enquiries - 05-04-2023, 05:00 PM - Forum: Before you buy Q&A - Replies (1)

Hello.

I am into photography and do a lot of editing in lightroom/photoshop. I ran out of HD space on my Macbook so started using an external HDD. I find I don't enjoy having to be plugged in to access the raw files and also ran into some other issues so I am looking at NAS as a solution. Would this be a viable solution? Would there be any drawbacks, such as speed/latency issues? What kind of setup would be sufficient to enable this to work as seamlessly as possible and what are the considerations I should take into account?

I have watched quite a few of your youtube videos and believe Synology + series would be a good way to go but I am worried I may fork out a lot of money on something that may have it's own drawbacks that I am currently unaware of. Any advice would be great!

Thanks,
James

Hi,

first off, i have a shield, so I'm interested in direct-play only.
1) - I would like a Nas that can play 4k 10bit up to 80-100 mbps on direct stream while it being under 500 or cheapest solution. (can you suggest one please)
2) - In your 4k plex test video, you test the F4-423 and it did play the TOP GUN movie but the usage was always nearing 100%, some people say it is due to some bugs on their software so I was wondering if you happen to know if TrueNas would solve the issue, did you test the F4 423 or maybe other NAS (accustor..) with plex/jelly on trueNAS? specifically for direct play with high bitrate HDR 10 bit videos please.

Best Regards,

  NAS Advice

Hello,

I currently have the DS412+ which needs an upgrade. I am currently waffling between the DS1823xs+ and the RS2423RP+. I may also want to wait for the RS1619xs+ update. I think that will still take some time. The DS3622xs+ is too expensive for me with hard drives. Could you help me with my decision. Maybe you have a better idea. Thanks for your help :-)

  Upgrade or Buy New
Posted by: Enquiries - 05-04-2023, 12:30 PM - Forum: Before you buy Q&A - Replies (1)

I have a Synology DS415+: running MailPlus server + Music + Video +Personal Data Storage for me and an off site family member. RAID 5 applies with daily backups.
I have ext USB drives but only 1 on a PC where I edit and archive TV recordings etc. Video archive draining ext USB drive and NAS does not have enough space for future. Do I upgrade NAS Drive storage size or buy new NAS for Media and future-proof increasing storage. If the latter, which NAS?
Thanks. Keith

  NAS Setup

Hi, I'm thinking on building/purchase a NAS system, mostly for media streaming purpose. Right now I have a raspberryPI running LibreElec with 3 external hard drives attached with 4, 5 and 6 Tb. So right now I have a capacity of +/- 15Tb and have 11Tb used.
One of external hard drive starts to fail so thats why I'm thinking to build/purchase a NAS. I'm thinking on 2 options here:
1) convert raspberryPi on a NAS with openVault and a HDD dock (like this one for example https://www.amazon.co.uk/dp/B07H11KXCL) and run kodi on my TV with Android TV (Philips 55OLED806) with the rapsberry streaming the media to the TV
2) buy a NAS and keep raspberry running libreElec

So, with this, do you think option 1 is doable? If not, what NAS do you recomend? And HDD? How many and wich capacity? What RAID should I use?

Many Thanks in advance for you help.

Best regards,

Telmo

  Advice, Ideas, Suggestions?

Advice, Ideas, Suggestions?

I currently have three NAS devices, at my two houses, and I’m going to be upgrading them.

At one house, I have two Synology boxes.

My first was/is a 220J. I quickly outgrew it, it has two 10tb Iron Wolf drives in SHR. I was using it for Plex and Audio Station, but I’m moving all of my Plex to my other NAS.

About the only upgrade I could do to this box is replace the drives with larger ones (maybe 16tb). Regardless, I don’t have a lot of use for this NAS anymore.

I purchased a second Synology, a 1821+ and I’m pretty happy with it. So far, I’ve installed 4 16tb Seagate Exos drives. It serves Plex to me and my friend that lives in my building, and it could also serve my Audio Station. I’m running Wyze Bridge on it via Docker, and I plan to run Home Kit and Home Assistant on it in the future.

Upgrade Plans:

Drives: l plan on getting two DX517’s when I run out of storage (Drive Space). Should I start buying larger drives like the 20tb exos’s, filling the remaining 4 slots with larger drives, and then start moving drives over to the DX517’s once I fill up the 1821+? That seems like the logical thing to do. I plan to make each box have its own volume.

Memory: l plan upgrade the memory. Currently, I’m thinking about getting the Crucial, 32gb kit, but should I consider upgrading to 64gb?

Network Card: I’d like to get a 10gb card, with two NVME slots.

NVME: I’d like to fill my two NVME slots as well. This leads to the question, what size, and what configuration? I’m thinking about one set for Read/Write Cache, and one set for the storage pool. Obviously, I’d like the biggest size I can afford for the storage pool, maybe a pair of 4gb? I’m not really sure how big I should make my Cache drives though. I’m a fan of overkill, but I don’t want to waste money either.

Finally, is there a difference where I put them? For example, the storage pool in the box and the cache on the network card, or vice versa?

At this location, I don’t own anything more than a single 5 Port Ethernet hub, so I’ll need to get something capable of 10gb, plus an adapter for my laptop. I’m on the fence about managed/unmanaged, but with SMB Multichannel, I might consider unmanaged.

Next up, is my main house, where I have a Qnap TVS-H874 (the i5 with 32gb).

Drives: I currently have 4 18tb drives installed. As before, wondering if I should switch to larger and move drives into expansion boxes when the time comes.

Two expansion slots, three wants: I’d like to get a TL-D1600S box, and that would take up one slot. Then, I’d like to add a 10gb card with 2 NVME slots. But it would be cool to have a dedicated GPU also.

NVME: Same story as my Synology, the only difference is that on the box, I have the 4.0 instead of the 3.0. That said, once again, what do I put where?

First world problems, I know. I’m just curious to hear what others think. Hopefully I’ll buy everything I mentioned, but who knows, maybe I’ll come to my senses… Or maybe my wife will figured out how much money I spend on this stuff.

Oh, and I just learned about the Qnap Guardian series.

  DC HC560 vs 570
Posted by: Enquiries - 05-04-2023, 02:00 AM - Forum: Before you buy Q&A - Replies (1)

Hi,

I was searching a lot do you please see any benefit of buying DC HC570 vs DC HC560? It seems 570 has Armor Cache, but maybe it's a marketing gimmick. 570 is 80 EUR more expensive than older generation (2021) 560 (there are 2 versions). It also seems WD says HC570 has 2nd generation OptiNAND whatever it means...Power consumption is higher for 570, by adding 2TBs maybe it's actually not worth it...
I will use it in 916+ Synology mainly for storing photos

thanks a lot to everyone for anwers
