Hello, I follow your you tube videos with interest but am wanting a question answering if possible please ?

I have a QNAP TS-673A with 6x 10Tb drives running QuTS Hero, quite happily, i have since just bought a TS-453A and would like to know if i can put QuTS Hero on that or am i stuck with the QTS because ideally i want to run ZFS as i do on my 673A

1- backup and access anytime my personal encrypted files .rar
2- family photos and videos anyone can access anytime
3- store drivers for my pc and laptop maybe some light game . ps1 and ps2 games . many
4- maybe will upload videos or movies can anyone access and watch movies or videos I upload anytime , Plex or like netflix
please note . first time will buy NAS . above just planning to use

Synology vs Asustor vs Qnap ?

In the process of moving data from DS216+II to DS1522+. I understand that the folder structure on the drive requires at least one "Shared" folder.  On my old drive years ago I created one called "shared" and then regular folders for photos, video, and music; (all at the top level).  On the new drive  also created a shared folder (again, called "shared") but for some reason I created the other three folders as sub-folders under the shared folder. Note: I am the only user with no plans to set up other users or groups.)

Hi, first off, thanks for all the work you do, it is very informative!

I am considering purchasing a NAS for the first time, probably a 6-bay with 12-16TB HDDs. Obviously, I would also need another NAS for backup.

I am interested in the Asustor AS6706T as my main NAS (I intend to use it for personal storage and as a media server with Plex), and a Synology 1621+ as the backup.

I have the following questions please:
- Would these NASs be suitable? Or should some other devices be considered, especially for the backup (I am not sure if it would be overkill)?
- Do you recommend installing SSDs to serve as cache? If so, what capacity should they have?
- What level of RAID should be used? I presume the same level should be used on both the main and backup NASs?
- What services do you recommend as (cost-effective) cloud backup?
- Would there be any issues if I purchased some drives a few months/years after the first set of drives (in terms of compatibility with the other drives)?

my name's Davide and I'm a UX designer/hobbyist photographer.

I'd consider myself tech-savvy but a novice when it comes to NAS. I've stumbled your channel recently and tried to digest a looooot of great content, but I thought I'd ask for your final opinion just to be sure.

My reasons for thinking I should get a NAS:
- large movie library, 4TB, and right now my plex server is my old gaming laptop to which 4hdd are attached, no backup
- Having a place where to save my camera's photos instead of google drive (I'm on the 2tb plan atm, and would keep it as a backup for sensitive data)
- Backup for my Mac and my girlfriend
- future use case, security cameras

With that in mind, your recommendation of Synology ds923+ would cost me 600€ + added ram, SSD, 2 ironwolf 12TB, total cost 1100€ = 1250€
That led me to think about the non-top recommended qnap TS-462, no extra ram, same drives, 980€

What would you pick?

I have the QNAP TS-251D with the 1-gigabyte ethernet port. My PC has a 2.5 GbE port. I want to utilise 2 GbE between them. Can I just fit a "Plugable 2.5G USB C and USB to Ethernet Adapter," in to the USB port of the NAS and then connect the pc and the NAS through a QNAP QSW-1105-5T switch?

I just watched this video from level1tech about how most modern  raid systems don't properly correct bit rot or parity errors. This was shocking to me.  Seems like only ZFS provides the error checking and correction and all of these NAS systems are not protecting our data? Please provide your opinion on this problem stated in this clip. Perhaps a YouTube episode is in order?

I currently have a Synology DS216+II with a couple of WD 5TB drives, paired so I have 5TB of usable space, tolerant to a single drive failure.

The NAS is used for storage of photos and videos, video editing, and streaming music and movies using Logitech Media Server and Plex. Movies are mostly 1080p but would like to cope with 4k when I next upgrade the TV. I'm also interested in running iSpy or similar CCTV.

I'm looking to upgrade to something with plenty more space as I'm taking more video now. Probably looking for 48TB or more?

Tempted with going SSD, like the new FlashStor.

Upfront cost isn't too important as I'll be buying through a business, but keen to have low power consumption as that's on my home energy bill.

Would love to hear your suggestions
