Hi all

First time poster here so please be gentle!

I'm in the market for a NAS. Primarily for a Plex server currently running 1080p content but would like to try and future proof for 4K.

I've been looking at all in one options and was leaning towards a a 4-bay synology or similar.

I then remembered I have some surplus hardware kicking around. I'm comfortable building PCs and am aware there will likely be more of a learning curve/tinkering over something like a synology solution on both the hardware and software sides. I enjoy the DIY side of things so happy to try this route.

I have available to me:

• NUC5i5MYHE - Intel i5-5300U @ 2.90GHz with 8GB DDR3
  
• ASUS X99-A II ATX MB with an Intel Xeon E5-1650 v3 @3.50GHZ with 32GB DDR4
  

• Would the NUC be underpowered and/or the ATX setup be overpowered
  
• Are there all in one case enclosures for either option that feature hot swapping for up to 8-bays? The Asus X99 has 10 sata ports I could utilise without adding additional hardware
  

Hi! im looking for a NAS that will primarily replace my 7 hdd drive configuration on my desktop. im going for 4tb-6tb in raid 1 configuration and the purpose of the nas will be to hold my files and data so its going be attached as a network drive and as dlna server to stream movies to tv. i would appreciate if you can give me 2-3 recommendations each on both 2 bay and 4 bay systems. the goal is as affordable as possible which can handle those basic tasks and able to utilize that gig interface as much as possible ie read/write performance. i prefer these systems to be a bit snappy when handling config tasks ie no crappy cpu. i dont mind the brand im ok with synology qnap asustor or any other good brand except wd. Thank you

The channel video on this NAS, which I can't link to, is great, and I'm really intrigued by this NAS, but I'm not sure how to figure out which processor I should be looking at between the i5/i7/i9. (I can't imagine actually needing an i9 without already knowing that I need it, so I'm not seriously considering that for myself, even though I do wonder when it's necessary.)

I can't really look at my existing workload, as the only NAS I've ever owned at this point is a 2-bay TS-253D. So, with the caveats that

1. I intend to install a 2x10GbE SFP+ card at least;
   
2. I want to run ZFS so I can use replication;
   
3. I may end up ditching QuTS Hero and installing Proxmox (and then TrueNAS in a VM). In fact, I'm 85 percent certain that will happen at some point. 
   
4. Likewise, there's a good chance I might add a GPU at some point if I decide I want to try to set up a cloud gaming server.
   

Hi - I'm an American living in Madrid - this summer I'll buy a TVS-h874X NAS and bring it home with me to Madrid - I'd love to find someone to help me properly configure and install apps, etc - SSD caching, Docker Apps (Handbrake, Plex, etc) - is this something that you might be able to provide over TeamViewer? Any advice?

hey you guys,
your site has been so useful as an explainer but i still feel a bit overwhelmed.
i'm a freelance photojournalist and travel constantly for work.
in addition to wanting to back up my many hard drives, i'd like to be able to access them on the go from whatever location i get internet access.
so i guess that means a NAS system with cloud backup as well? forgive me if i'm misstating. i'm still wrapping my head around the correct terminology.
right now i have 15TB of storage, but i will be adding to that as new projects come in.
any tips for the right system for me? i just don't want to throw down cash on the wrong one, or one that becomes outdated quickly.
i'm currently running on mac OS if that makes a difference.

Hi - naive question I’m sure. I have a DS418play originally with 4x3 TB disks. Due to budgetary constraints I bought two 12TB disk and having installed them 1 by 1 with a repair and an expand after 2 I now have 2 x 3tB and 2x12tb giving me about 15TB so I assume Synfs (can’t rem name) has mirrored them. Can I add another single 12TB later or will I have to do both. If I can bring it to 24TB I don’t mind removing the last 3tB disk is that in fact my way forward put in another 12. Repair it and then ask it to remove the final 3tB disk having a spare bay for future expansion. I don’t have enough cloud storage for a complete backup and start again

First, the excellent in-depth review videos were a big help in helping me decide to replace my old router with the rt6600! I did purchase an mr2200 as an additional mesh point. Went this route thinking it would be better to have another tri-band.. But now am considering replacing the 2200 with the wrx560(?) any thoughts on if that would be more beneficial given that’s it’s newer technology, and I’m sure would be faster, even though it’s a dual band as opposed to Tri-band? For reference this is a home setup with the rt6600 downstairs and the current 2200 upstairs- and the upstairs unit usually has more clients connected. Appreciate your help with this.

Hello, I'm new to the NAS world and trying to understand what type of buyer the QNAP TS-h973AX is targetted toward vs. the TS-873A. It seems the 973AX has superior support for video editors while the 873A is more apt for those needed larger amounts of storage. Is that correct? How else are the two different?

I ordered a Synology DS923+ based on a local company (Data Doctors) recommendation. I hired their technician to install it and get me “up and running” since I knew little about NAS. Technician arrives and attempts to download firmware update utilizing my MacBook Pro and we can’t get software to open on a Mac (“software not available in your country”)(what?). Tech says that he always has problems with Synology and Macs. Advises that I return the Synology (I did, to Amazon) and find a 2bay that work’s better on a Mac. I’m stuck with four 8TB of HDD but saw the TerraMaster and wondered if it “plays” better with a Mac than the Synology. Your suggestions? Oh, I’m not a Windows guy so please don’t go there. I had a hard enough time changing over once. A different technician? I already paid this guy $$$. I just need some help to get this video business going with some decent storage that I can hand off projects on. Help me, Oh-Be-Wan, you’re my only hope (so far).

I need some advice on which NAS system to get started with. Im overrun with external hard drives full of RAW files which I need to consolidate and create a better/faster editing workflow including Lightroom, Photoshop and occasional video editing. Its only myself that uses this at home but editing raw files and large panoramic images is a must! I've watched. may of your videos but i'm still confused.

I've looked at DS420+, DS923+, DS220j and QNAPs comparable systems! I use a 2017 Retina 5K 3.4 GHz Quad-Core Intel Core i5.

I recently bought an 8tb HDD and a 4tb SSD which are being used in enclosures but would like to integrate these into the NAS!
