  NAS selection
Posted by: Enquiries - 05-29-2023, 07:30 AM - Forum: Before you buy Q&A - Replies (1)

Hello there, your channel are really incredibly great.
I'm looking for a Home NAS to play photos and videos on my TV, Phone and computer using a decent NAS.
I need it to be not too noisy so that I can place it in the leaving room and woluld like to avoid as much as possible the zzzz sound when airing a movie or populating photos.
I have selected a shortlist with prices in Euros :

DS223 - 290 euros
TS-231P3-2G - 344 Euros
TS-433 - 426 Euros
TS-262 - 446 Euros

Please let me know if you see better option but I wanted to have something quite evolutive for the next years as well.

Thank you.

What NAS and HDD/SSD to choise
Posted by: Enquiries - 05-29-2023, 07:00 AM - Forum: Before you buy Q&A - Replies (1)

Hi I hope this email finds you well?
I need an advise - My Drobo 5N died on me ... all my 4x4TB RED WD 5400 Nas drive is now dead (or Drobo slowly stopped working?) Right now - Total gone :-(
So I need a replacement (new NAS)
I love the 4 bay - But could properly live with 2-bay?
I have an old (20yr old) Buffalo that I use as a backup NAS (2x2TB)
I did look a lot at the TS-464 and wanted some SSD (Working from home since 1995) so noise is an issue for us (Wife from Nott. works here with me). I also have a 2-bay ShareCenter as 2. backup.
My Drobo ate 2 disc - leaving me with 2 - But now I can't boot it up :-(
Can I use SSD and what brand? And model to use for NAS?
Can I just load the TS-464 with M.2. (Or is that like Drobo a "Buffer disc?) What brand and model to use? and size?

My guess is that 3 disc is better than 2 for data-protection?

Hope to hear from you soon.... Have a nice Pentecost

All the best
Peter

  NAS, WD or Synology
Posted by: Enquiries - 05-29-2023, 05:30 AM - Forum: Before you buy Q&A - Replies (1)

morning. I have several NAS devices (synology, WD and SEagate. I have 8 pc's all identical with no PC holding any data, only software.

My NAS devices are split between Primary (A) secondary (B) and tertiary © all connected.
The primary is realtime replicated to the secondary. I'me getting evidence that my network is being hacked how can I isolate the AS from the router yet allow the pc to access both routerr and NAS

Require a large NAS for backup media for light playback
Posted by: Enquiries - 05-29-2023, 04:00 AM - Forum: Before you buy Q&A - Replies (1)

I have a large collection of thousands of DVDs, blurays and even some VHS, I really want to digitise my collection for local playback without degrading any of the discs and I've done some calculations, it's estimated between 100-200tb, so I think I'd ideally aim for the higher end given I do intend to expand indefinitely.

It's not an environment where speedy access is overly problematic for the most part (I guess seeking through a large bluray would potentially be a minor issue) so that likely at the very least rules out tape storage, but I don't need to buy two 100tb exadrives by numbus either. I'm a little lost but would rather not spend an inordinate amount of money on it if at all possible. Though I'm pretty sure storage in the UK costs around 2.5x as much as almost any other country in the world too...

  Ts-464 8gb or 4gb
Posted by: Enquiries - 05-29-2023, 02:00 AM - Forum: Before you buy Q&A - Replies (1)

Hi, Should I buy the TS-464 8gb version, I don’t thing you can up grade the Ram, does the OS/System use 4gb of the 8gb. or try and find the TS-464 4gb which you can upgrade to 16gb. I will not be running any VMs. Is the 8gb version the newer version and is better than the 4gb. Thank you for a very informative video, thanks Paul

Should I wait or buy later
Posted by: Enquiries - 05-29-2023, 12:30 AM - Forum: Before you buy Q&A - Replies (1)

I want to purchase a Synology NAS 1621+ after considering the current price and the fact that it is 3 years old, I find myself wanting to wait for the next newer best thing.

We have a very small real estate investment business and have 2 small kids (lots of photos) and I like to own my movies. Our in-laws will use the NAS as well. Therefore we are considering backing up everything on the NAS to avoid paying for cloud storage and running out of phone storage.

Should we wait for the next 2023 2024 models?

DIY NAS - NUC vs ATX?
Posted by: Mummraah - 05-28-2023, 11:56 AM - Forum: Before you buy Q&A - Replies (1)

Hi all

First time poster here so please be gentle!

I'm in the market for a NAS. Primarily for a Plex server currently running 1080p content but would like to try and future proof for 4K.

I've been looking at all in one options and was leaning towards a a 4-bay synology or similar.

I then remembered I have some surplus hardware kicking around. I'm comfortable building PCs and am aware there will likely be more of a learning curve/tinkering over something like a synology solution on both the hardware and software sides. I enjoy the DIY side of things so happy to try this route.

I have available to me:

  • NUC5i5MYHE - Intel i5-5300U @ 2.90GHz with 8GB DDR3
  • ASUS X99-A II ATX MB with an Intel Xeon E5-1650 v3 @3.50GHZ with 32GB DDR4

I'll also likely have a GeForce 970 available to use at some point in the next few months

I'm trying to weigh up the pros and cons with each option. This will be my first NAS so I'm on a bit of a learning curve here! Currently running Plex on windows from my gaming rig and want to move it onto a dedicated device.

Some things I'm trying to work out are:
  • Would the NUC be underpowered and/or the ATX setup be overpowered
  • Are there all in one case enclosures for either option that feature hot swapping for up to 8-bays? The Asus X99 has 10 sata ports I could utilise without adding additional hardware

I've done a bit of searching for a case that supports hot swapping with an ATX board and can't find much. I know I could by a standard PC cases that has 8 bays but was aiming more for a shorter/wider case as opposed to a tower.

So what would you guys do if you had the above hardware available to you and were looking to build a NAS?

  Choosing the right one

Hi! im looking for a NAS that will primarily replace my 7 hdd drive configuration on my desktop. im going for 4tb-6tb in raid 1 configuration and the purpose of the nas will be to hold my files and data so its going be attached as a network drive and as dlna server to stream movies to tv. i would appreciate if you can give me 2-3 recommendations each on both 2 bay and 4 bay systems. the goal is as affordable as possible which can handle those basic tasks and able to utilize that gig interface as much as possible ie read/write performance. i prefer these systems to be a bit snappy when handling config tasks ie no crappy cpu. i dont mind the brand im ok with synology qnap asustor or any other good brand except wd. Thank you
