NAS for Plex Media |

Hi there
Home user here looking to begin hosting my data myself and reduce and eventually eliminate reliance on third party cloud services.
My uses and preferences are as below:
1. Storage for media to run a Plex Server. Planning to play, at the top end, 4k Dolby Digital Atmos H.264/HEVC movies and shows.
2. Storage to back up my household's digital life.
3. Looking for a device that can be out in the open in the living room appearance wise - I don't believe sound will be an issue.
From my own research I've considered getting a Synology DS920+ or a DS923+ but I'm torn on which device to get. I'm also looking at 4 bays for increasing storage in the future.
Look forward to hearing your thoughts.
Many thanks
A.

Data Scrubbing on My Cloud PR4100? Possible upgrade? |

I was talking to my uncle about his spectacular multi-state NAS redundancy setup with multiple My Cloud PR4100 units and asked him about his Data Scrubbing schedule. To my surprise, he didn't understand the question.
I found the PR4100 manual and there was no mention of Data Scrubbing. Does the My Cloud range do automatic scrubbing? Or does it even do any scrubbing?
If you were to do an incremental upgrade away from WD My Cloud, what would you suggest for a person that uses Plex a lot to show off new videos of their grandchildren's school sports games?

What NAS would work for me |

I was looking heavily into a DS1522+. I watched your 30 minute video on YouTube and it was very informative!
My problem was the NVMe and RAM compatibility list on Synology's website. They only say they're compatible with Synology NVMe and RAM. That's starts to get hella-expensive. For instance, the NVMe cache size gets cut in half for double the price.
I'm not stuck on Synology.
Again, my main use will be lots of movie storage and streaming them to my TV through the Plex app, playing with containerization, and possibly hosting things for my friends like a Foundry server. I'm all about extra cache and sparing no expense, but damn those Synology prices are just wow.

Wanting to create NAS Media Server due to 40GB of Media (TV Series & Movies). Currently I have 16 different size types of WD external HD's. So I would like to purchase a NAS the "RIGHT WAY" so that I don't waste my money. I have watched many of the nascompares videos of YouTube but I am still confused. Please help show me the way so that I can start purchasing! Thanks

I read that the 1821+ is capable of creating a SSD Strorage pool from DSM 7.2 and on.
Now i have 1 3400 SSD as Cache
Do i need 2 SSD's?
How do ik "delete" the caching and make a SSD storage pool.
Will the system b much faster?

Currently have a bunch of drives (SSD and m.2.) hooked to my Mac Studio with SATA-USB convertors. Looks messy and it's really hard to tell what is where.
My needs are quite simple,
- 4 bays minimum
- house my current drives in (3 x SSD ja 2 x M.2) as they are, or some of them. OR 2 old + 2 (or more) new drives
- having m.2 is not mandatory, I can keep them as external drives
- cost effective (cheap), silent, energy efficient
- fast enough to read / write directly, similar to any external hard drive I currently use
- can be attached directly to my Mac studio (if needed for speed) or to my Huawei rooter (b525s-65a)
- going to use it locally / local network would be cool, but not necessary. Using it outside home / accessible from internet, not necessary at all
- Having PLEX could be fun but not mandatory
- I don't need virtualization or similar, surveillance etc

Hi, I have 2 x WD MyCloud PRo NAS and mainly use them for media within my house but sometimes when I am on holiday. Since your latest video on YouTube mentioned PLEX and alternatives, I looked into Jellyfish but I am totally confused on the installation process.
Will you be doing an idiots guide to installation of Jellyfin on WD anytime soon?
Love your YouTube channel, so keep up the great work.
Regards,
Rob.

Hi, thanks for Your informative site. The more I hear the more I get confused though. I habe a QNAP 223 NAS mainly for time machine backup. Due to the hardware limitations the GUI go the QNAP has become almost unusable. To male things worse I have shingled WD Red (without pro) drives that are supposed to be a no go. I am thinking about getting a new system with new drives. I need it to be rather silent, I won't bei doing much VM though I would like toying around with that too. 2x8TB Drives vs 4x4TB drives ? I was thinking DS220+ with 2 8TB Toshiba or Synology 3300. Thanks !!
