| Synology Hot Spare |

I currently have a Synology DS920+ utilising 3 of the 4 available drives in one storage pool being Bay1 16TB, Bay2 8TB, Bay3 8TB, Bay 4 spare. The RAID type I am using is SHR.
I also have another 16TB drive which I had initially anticipated on growing my available storage pool with, but do not currently require that additional storage immediately.
My questions;
1. If I use the spare 16TB drive as a hot spare, can I ever re-allocate its capacity to instead by part of my storage pool instead of being a hot spare?
2. If this is achievable, do you think it is the best use of the currently UN-utilised storage capacity?
My thought process is as follows;
With a hot spare, I currently have 16TB available in my storage pool,with the potential to grow this to 32TB (3x16TB) while still maintaining a 16TB hot spare, which I could potentially convert to be part of the pool if yet more storage capacity is ever required.

I have been using Plex on my Synology DS216j for a few years, mainly for viewing my music video collection. I have been looking for a way to view my photo collection currently on Flickr and have tried Plex. I am finding it is very slow to load each photo, I have tried the various fixes suggested on-line but they have no effect. This seems to be a common problem, do you know of a fix?

My relative lives in another state. We both recently purchased the DS1522+. We both want to be able to backup our NAS to each other. We've watch a ton of videos but still can't figure it out. Perhaps you could help us? We do not have the option to put both boxes on the same LAN, so we are starting from being remote.
You guys are the reason we bought these (first nas for both of us) during the most recent Amazon Prime days. $550 for 1522+. We thought it was a good buy. Both systems are identical with three 8TB drives to start, in a SHB raid. Two 1TB NvME, and 32 GB Ram.
Thanks in advance for your help! You are much appreciated for all your work!!!

I have a USB four-drive enclosure [NOT SYNOLOGY] I attached to my DS920+.
I recently changed (upgraded) drives and renamed them on my local machine.
However, when I reattached it to the DS920+ (via USB) they still have the previous drive names.
How can I rename the JBOD drives attached in my DS920+?

Hello my Drobo stopped working the other day and the power supply that plugs into it is flashing green so I ordered a new power supply which hasn't come in yet but this has made me determine I'm going to replace it so any advice would be greatly appreciated I looked at your video and comparisons and it was very informative. I'm leaning towards Other World Computing.

Hi. I have watched almost all the synology nas youtube videos and I am perPLEXed on what to do. 1)I want object recognition so I need 4 GB RAM. I am a home user with a modest amount of data but use my NAS for photo library and files. 2)I will soon upload action camera videos as well. All of the multimedia stuff is viewed on mobile ios devices. 3) 920+ is not available in Australia easily. So do I hunt one down or buy ds423+. In both cases I assume I have to upgrade the RAM. In the end this seems the better option for multimedia vs ds923+… but I guess it all comes down to does storing action camera videos on the NAS and watching them on a mobile device if if 4k or higher. I dont really understand transcoding but I assume there will be a need here.

| Synology Surveillance Station |

Hi. I have 4 Synology NAS (DS411+, DS1511+, DS716+ and DS1821+). The unit I use for Surveillance Station is the DS716+ with 11 licenses and currently using only 10. The cameras are today all Hikvision with 1-3MP, 3-4MP, 1-4MP ColorVu and 5-8MP ColoVu.
Just ordered the 4MP ColorVu to evaluate the difference vs the 8MP ColorVu. The plan is to perhaps move all remaining cameras to either 4 or 8MP ColorVu when the test period is finished. All new cameras are from the Hikvision PRO range 2CD2087, 2CD2387 and 2CD2347.
The DS716+ I currently use for my security system has worked fine all these years and continue to do so. The NAS has 8GB RAM running DSM 6.2.4 with 2 2TB disks running hybrid raid. Storage capacity in excess of 30 days (only on recording detections which are somewhat frequent) today without problems. All recording at 15fps and full resolution.
Is there anything to gain from upgrading the NAS and if so, which model/configuration would you suggest and when.
Thank you.
