Can single NAS support NAS and NVR functionality
Posted by: Enquiries - 05-31-2023, 07:00 PM - Forum: Before you buy Q&A - Replies (1)

Hello!
I am building a new home and I am planning out my new HomeLab /network and security cameras. I already have installed 8 POE drops for security cameras and APs, and another 8 Ge network drops around the house. I have not locked down any equipment vendors yet.
For the HomeLab, I am looking to play with Home Assistant and NextCloud services, and anything else that catches my fancy. I also want to play with Proxmox. So, I am thinking of starting with a NAS to support my initial dive into HA and NextCloud and general file serving. Then get a dedicated server (a miniPC ?) when I want to jump into Proxmox.
My questions are: Can a single NAS support both my initial NAS services and NVR functionality? If I get a 4 bay NAS and I want to use 3 bays for a RAID, can I configure the 4th for NVR storage? Does that make sense? Might I run into running out of local network bandwidth when I get a dedicated server which might do some media streaming?

Back up task for folder on iPhone
Posted by: Enquiries - 05-31-2023, 10:30 AM - Forum: Before you buy Q&A - Replies (1)

Hey guys,

I just got my first NAS (DS220+) and I'm still getting a bit familiar with it.
There's loads of info on how to back up files from a PC or MAC to the NAS, but I'm struggling to find good info on how to back up files from my iPhone.

Specifically I want to back up a single folder on my iPhone into my NAS. I'd like to have this backed up automatically whenever there is a change in this iPhone folder.

On my MAC I have done this through Drive Client by setting up a back-up task. However I can't find this option on my iPhone app.

Do you guys have any idea how to set up an automatic back up for this folder?

Thanks a lot!

Best regards,

Bob.

  Questions about PR4100 and SSDs
Posted by: Enquiries - 05-31-2023, 06:30 AM - Forum: Before you buy Q&A - Replies (1)

Hi,

I would like to know if the WD PR4100 is compatible with SSDs other than WD’s one ? I want to buy Samsung 870 QVO MZ-77Q8T0BW but I can’t find a compatibility list for the PR4100.

Are SSDs reliable for a Plex NAS, and Plex only ? We’ll only watch movies, tv shows once every two days so there won’t be a lot of write and rewrite. I keep reading people saying SSDs are not ready for a heavy use but what if it is for a Plex server ?

Thank you for your answers and for your great work. I don’t always get it when it gets really technical but still there are great information for people like me. So thank you again !

Igor

Reliability of WD RED drives & Synology
Posted by: Enquiries - 05-31-2023, 01:00 AM - Forum: Before you buy Q&A - Replies (1)

Hi Guys, I've been a follower of your Youtube channel since early 2018 and your advice lead me towards the Synology 918+. Thank you.

I'd lbe interested in what you make on a Youtube clip I just found from SpaceRex.

I left the comment on his clip:

I bought my DS 918+ back in May 2018 along with 4x 6TB WD Red (wdc-wd60efrx). I just checked my disk health after watching your video and found they're all green (healthy) with no issues shown. I run short DST health checks every month and Extended tests every 4 months. Am I the odd one out here? (Currently using DSM 7.1.1-42962 Update 5)"

Thank you soooo much for all your advise and insight over the years.

Regards
Raj Dhand

  video suggestion

Hope a suggestion is ok here!
Saw this video:https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=cLGi8sPLkLY
Excerpt from the description:
Western Digital has ben caught again with anti consumer practices on their NAS drives. This time they are marking some of their drives which have had more than 3 years of power on hours as 'warning' within Synology DSM (this is right after their 3 year warranty runs out). This can cause tons of issues within DSM, as actual warnings, such as too many relocated sectors, will go unnoticed. This is not the first time WD NAS drives have had serious anti-consumer behavior, the most notable was them secretly shipping SMR drives as NAS drives.

Not much available yet on this issue. Seems like an issue your channel should cover with your usual information packed style.

  starting point with nas
Posted by: nas_max - 05-30-2023, 11:45 AM - Forum: Before you buy Q&A - Replies (1)

Hi,
if I start with 2 disk´s in raid 1 and I will expand later can I set another 2 disk raid 1 and bundle it to raid 10 subsequently without data loss?
( ... is this possible in QuTS hero ZFS or in DSM with BTRFS ... ? )

That is the crucial question for my decision for my first nas.  Confused

Thanks and regards,
max.

  Choosing my first NAS
Posted by: Enquiries - 05-30-2023, 09:00 AM - Forum: Before you buy Q&A - Replies (1)

Hi,

Love your channel. I'm looking in to buying my first NAS. Right now I have a home lab with OMV but I'm looking in to something more stable and easy to set up and maintain. What I'm looking for is a NAS for streaming media at home trough SMB, back up photos from phones and manage some files between the home members (3-4 users). For the time being i believe that storage around 4-6 TB should be more than enough. On top of that I would like to be able to run some containers such as Transmission, Radarr, Jellyfin, maybe Nextcloud (i don't know whether there are benefits vs DSM), so I will need something with a bit more RAM or the possibility to expand. One of the main concerns that I have are around noise as the NAS will be placed in my living room so I would prefer it to be as silent as possible .
I was thinking about buying a second hand device and was looking in to Synology DS220+. So I would love to hear your thoughts and also to ask should I look in to other brands?

  Dead DS413J replacement
Posted by: Enquiries - 05-29-2023, 10:00 PM - Forum: Before you buy Q&A - Replies (1)

Hi,

My old DS413J has died. t was used for file, photo and video/movie storage.

For the replacement I would like to make use of Plex.
I am considering Synology 920+ or moving over to QNAP.

1. Do I need to be concerned with Synology's strategy re supported drives. Only Synology drives are officially compatible with 920+? Is there a risk that they restrict to Synology drives only in the future?

2. Do I have to buy Synology and transfer the hard drives to get back up and running or can I transfer data to a new Qnap from the synology backup?

Many thanks. Your site has been very informative.

Regards,

Oliver

I'm looking to move my cloud storage to a local option as I'm sure you know Google has changed their storage rates/policy recently. NAS and hardware are a whole new world to me. I feel like I'm shooting blind in the dark. I was looking at the DS1522 + Thanks
