  Netgear NAS end of life
Posted by: Enquiries - 08-05-2023, 01:30 PM - Forum: Before you buy Q&A - Replies (1)

Hi there! Like so may others I have been surprised by the Netgear end of life for ReadyCloud. I don't want to use my RN102 NAS anymore as I got a QNAP 473A, but I would like to get my data of the Netgear NAS.

How would I do that?

Thanks
Chris

  Adding drives
Posted by: Enquiries - 08-05-2023, 09:30 AM - Forum: Before you buy Q&A - Replies (1)

Hi,
I have a QNAP TS-431P3-2G NAS with two 6TB drives set as a RAID 1. I am new to NAS systems and have been watching you first set up videos - Brilliant information by the way. I have only gone as far as setting a storage volume as I want to add an extra two drives. My question is can I add two larger drives (say 10 - 12 TB) and will I be able to set the four up as a RAID 1 (I like the idea of mirrored drives) such that each 6TB is mirrored and each 10TB the same. Or would it be a better idea to simply add two 6TB.
Thanks in advance.

Qnap TS-453e maximum nvme pcie 3 gen x2 size
Posted by: Enquiries - 08-05-2023, 07:00 AM - Forum: Before you buy Q&A - Replies (1)

Hi.

To *NAScompares* First of all, thank you so much for all your valuable videos in regards to the different NAS systems out there, and putting them in a way a newbie like myself can understand it. Due to your videos, I now felt confident enough to finally pull the trigger on buying a NAS system for home 4k media, and to share remotely, as a secondary function, if viable.

*To the forum/NAScompares* I bought a ts-453e qnap. After searching for a week of trying to find out how big of a SSD nvme 2280 pcie gen 3 3x2 to buy, I cannot find ANY information on the size this can handle. I don't want to waste my money at all, but still get the top it can use.

I am wondering if you have any knowledge on this?

It's weird, because I check the compatibility pages on the qnap website, and it keeps recommending devices i didn't even include in the search, so I simply can't trust it.

  Amazon vs B&H vs Adorama
Posted by: rpwoodjr - 08-05-2023, 12:02 AM - Forum: Before you buy Q&A - Replies (2)

I’ve used Amazon a lot for photography gear and B&H a few times with no real issues. I haven’t used Adorama at all but have heard good things.  Would appreciate hearing folks experiences using these three online sites for NAS devices… especially Adorama.

  DS923+ configuration - Drives/Cache
Posted by: Enquiries - 08-04-2023, 11:30 PM - Forum: Before you buy Q&A - Replies (1)

Greetings,
I'm convinced me that the following NAS is for me

DS923+ with 4GB RAM
10GbE network card
RAID 10 array

I'm looking for redundancy, reliability, and I/O. My usage case is fileserver, media server, and video workflow. No transcoding or VM. Maybe future surveillance video.

I'm need to populate this basic Synology NAS:

DS923+ with 4GB RAM
10GbE network card

WD PRO drives are 7,200 RPM and PLUS are 5,400, I don't know which are more reliable and/or faster in RAID10 arrays. Also wondering if adding an NVMe cache is a game changer.

Here are three potential configurations:

> Configuration 1 (slow HDDs)
3TB WD Red PLUS (5,400 RPM)
Cost = $990

> Configuration 2 (slow HDDs, plus caching)
3TB WD Red PLUS drives (5,400 RPM)
SNV3410 400GB SSD Cache
Cost = $1,150

> Configuration 3 (fast HDDs)
2TB WD Red PRO drives (7,200 RPM)
Cost = $1,090

Q1) Any standouts for reliability and/or I/O?
Q2) Would additional RAM help I/O at all?

Thanks!

  Upgrading QTS on unsupported systems
Posted by: Enquiries - 08-04-2023, 11:30 PM - Forum: Before you buy Q&A - Replies (1)

I have recently upgraded an hs-251 to qts 5.1 which it doesn't support but is working fine.

I think the nameing they use allowed the 251+ firmware to load due to a naming convention

but that leads me to another question

I have other systems that i would like to upgrade for basic reasons to the new OS even if it doesn't have official support

I want to stay with the QTS os.. any thoughts

Jeff

  DS423+ vs DS1522+
Posted by: rpwoodjr - 08-04-2023, 10:32 PM - Forum: Before you buy Q&A - Replies (2)

I am a current user of the Synology DS216+II which I purchased just under 6 years ago.  I consider myself an entry-level NAS user having not wandered much beyond simply using it for the purpose of being able to access my data from all of the computers in our household and occassionally accessing it remotely using the QuickConnect capability.  I've stored some photos, video, and music but have not used any of the special packages related to to those media.... and I would like for that to change.

I have thousands of digital photo and video files that I would like to get off of my laptop, desktops, DVDs, external hard drives etc and onto my NAS network.  I've been watching YouTube videos ad nauseam on the DS423+ and DS923+ and now in the last half day have looked into the DS1522+.  This will likely be the first and last time I upgrade my NAS and want to plan for the future... but being a realistic 72 year-old, not too far down the road. :-)

Between the 423 and the 923 I find myself leaning pretty heavily toward the DS423+.  But, I've not seen any direct comparisons DS423+ and DS1522+.  So, I would appreciate pros and cons input on the 423 vs 1522.

I hope to make the decision and pull the trigger in the next week.  Thanks in advance for your input.

TrueNAS advice from your TrueNAS video
Posted by: Enquiries - 08-04-2023, 09:00 PM - Forum: Before you buy Q&A - Replies (1)

So, I have a BeeLink AMD 5600k mini pc and 3x 4TB SSDs lying around, from another project. Can I put these together for a quick and easy and free NAS? The one downside I have upfront is that the mini pc doesn't seem to expose additional SATA ports, so I will probably be relegated to USB 3 connections for the SSDs, still worth it and would TrueNAS be a reasonable OS for this?

I was thinking that I could do a Z1 pool and get *TB useable.

  buying first NAS
Posted by: Enquiries - 08-04-2023, 03:00 AM - Forum: Before you buy Q&A - Replies (1)

Hi,
I am looking for a storage solution that will free up space on my MacBook and improve my workflow. I just started getting into sport photography/videography and have already maxed out the 1TB storage on my Mac. Ideally I'd like to be able to work in the cloud and keep my Mac storage free.
Thanks in advance.
