  SA3400 alternative
Posted by: Enquiries - 05-24-2023, 06:00 AM - Forum: Before you buy Q&A - Replies (1)

We use couple of Synology SA3400. We have many 1217sas extensions and stock of 8TB SAS drives. For new location I need to get another storage, but sa3400 are no longer available, sa3410 claim no compatibility with our extensions nor disks. I cannot find similar system taking SAS drives which we have a plenty and new. Use is video editing. Do you know any SAS drive solution of similar performance? Synology software is not a must a we only use SMB access and replicate this storage to other ones. Buying all (storage and sata drives we cannot afford).

  QNAP Shared Folders
Posted by: Enquiries - 05-24-2023, 01:30 AM - Forum: Before you buy Q&A - Replies (1)

I'm new to NAS and have been following your excellent QNAP setup videos. If I set up a shared folder are all folders below that automatically also shared folders? eg I've set up a media shared folder, I'm then going to have categories such as movies, shows, pictures....etc as sub folders. Hope that makes sense.

  NAS recommendstio

Want to run a VPN with a VM as server for PC inventory management software. Access by only a small group. Was thinking of something like TD-464 or TS-473A. Probably don’t even need 4 bays. Does this make any sense? Thanks

  Jellyfin Transcode
Posted by: Enquiries - 05-23-2023, 05:00 AM - Forum: Before you buy Q&A - Replies (1)

First, thank you for your help. You got me set up with my NAS and I'm appreciated. Videos were wonderful.
That said, here is my predicament
NAS: Terramaster F5-221 (8Gb added RAM)
Issue: Jellyfin Hardware Transcoding doesn't seem to work and still runs CPU at 100 percent with any 4k movie.
I use my Xbox Series X as my media player of choice because it's my livingroom hub effectively. The Jellyfin App is just a webwrapper. That said... it's not the best supported. However, I don't mind transcoding down where needed. My biggest issue is that when I run items even when transcoding seems set up as advertised... my CPU runs at 100 percent. I'm trying to run VAAPI. I get same results on my PC through web (which I expect and I use to test.) Do you know what might be the issue here? Thank you in advance.

  Set-up QNAP TS453D, and synch
Posted by: Enquiries - 05-23-2023, 03:30 AM - Forum: Before you buy Q&A - Replies (1)

Hi Robbie et al,
Thanks for your QNAP 1st-time set-up videos. Learning a lot, and it's a tough slog.
NAS is QNAP TS453D, 4x4TB drives. Host computer is HP desktop, Windows 10. Initially 1 user (me). Later will add other devices and users. Thanks to Video #1 I have created one storage pool (4 disks), RAID 5, and 3 volumes, created and mapped 1 shared folder.
Next step (?) is to populate the NAS with “all” my data from the host computer, and to set up a means of keeping it up to date. I think (thanks to Video #2) I need to install and use Qsynch. Right? Wrong?? How should the data be copied to the NAS?
And, in plain language, what does “synch” actually mean? What is the source; what is the destination; what gets deleted when you “synch”? What are the rules for updates and deletions? I want the computer file to be the master; the NAS to be the backup file. Appreciate any explanation you can give, or you can point to me to.

Regards,
Paul

Synology NAS for google photos replacement
Posted by: Enquiries - 05-23-2023, 03:00 AM - Forum: Before you buy Q&A - Replies (1)

Hi guys,

I have a DS920+ system set up for PLEX and for backing up laptops and phones etc but I want a separate system to use exclusively for photo cloud storage so I can dump google photos. So far I like Synology photos and want to continue in that ecosystem. I am considering the ds9223+ with two 8TB drives in SHR to start and then backing it up to the ds920+. I like the future proofing the DS923+ provides. Is this foolish? Or will it be good for a photo NAS.

thanks!

What RAID is best for my needs
Posted by: Enquiries - 05-22-2023, 08:30 PM - Forum: Before you buy Q&A - Replies (1)

Hello, I am considering a QNAP TS-464 for home use, backups, games, possibly media for 2 users. I have seen a lot of discussion between RAID 10 and 5 for a 4 bay. What RAID configuration would you recommend for this type of use?

Thank you for your time.

  Set up of server Backups
Posted by: Enquiries - 05-22-2023, 05:30 PM - Forum: Before you buy Q&A - Replies (1)

Hello,
Previously, you helped me select a NAS (Synology DS923+) and I made a small donation to your channel.
Now, that I have the machine, and have the initial setup done, I would like some help in choosing which backup option to use (of the many different software programs that are included by Synology.
Naturally, I want to pay you for your time, so you let me know what I owe you for your expertise.
Here's my setup. I have a Windows 2019 Server with two SSD's that I want to back up, the C Drive and the D Drive, which contains my data.
I have 2 8TB Disks in my NAS. I want to backup my Server both C & D drives into separate folders on Disk 1 of my NAS.
I want to set up a backup of my MS Office 365 Files on my NAS, on drive # 2. I think I'll use the software from Synology on both but that's where the difficulty comes in.
So, can we work a deal where you give me instructions on how to set those up, & which programs to use, and I pay you for your expertise?
