  First NAS
Posted by: Enquiries - 08-02-2023, 02:30 AM - Forum: Before you buy Q&A - Replies (1)

Hi guys- Love your videos and I've learned a lot. Thank you!

That said, I'm not confident in choosing components for my 1st NAS without direction from people who know what they are talking about.

Use cases are photo backup, multi device access, and personal cloud. I currently have 5TB of photos spread between two 3TB hard drives. I retired this year meaning more photography and more storage space.

I'm willing to spend more for SSDs because I would like it to be as quiet as possible. I’m thinking of five 2TB SATA SSDs.

Security is a priority so even though I like the sound of a more open system I’d probably steer clear of QNAP without some assurance their issues are overblown.

I'm 70 years old and I've been playing with computers since the 1980s but no formal training. I did build a PC years ago.

Can you tell me which NAS to buy, which drives to populate it with, and which RAID to set up?

Photo Jellyfin on Terramaster F4-423
Posted by: MSA99 - 08-01-2023, 02:55 PM - Forum: Home Multimedia - Replies (1)

Hello All

I am facing an issue with playback from my jellyfin server on the F423.

I watched your video on Youtube and followed the instruction, went to the extra step of installing ModBase1.

I was able to access the libraries, compile and do everything except actually playing any files (tried from the browser and the app on google TV).

I get this error "This client isn't compatible with the media and the server isn't sending a compatible media format."

after that i tried to disable hardware acceleration, made no difference.

I am running the latest version of TOS 5.1

The only thing i can think of is:
in the jellyfin server app it says " Setup the Ffmpeg path to /usr/local/ffmpeg51/sys/bin/ffmpeg"

when i go to the ffmpeg there is nowhere to setup up that path.
also worth mentioning that in the Modbase1 app it notes " ModBase1 is not available in PATH", and i click on add to path, it still dispalys the same message.

I have zero experience with linux, Just bought this NAS, followed your tutorial on how to set it up.

Would really appreciate the help if you have the time.

Edit 1: Under the playback of the web interface of the jellyfin server there is an option to specify the folder for " FFmpeg path:"

I tried using this "  /usr/local/ffmpeg51/sys/bin/ffmpeg "

but unfortunately got also an error " We're unable to find FFmpeg using the path you've entered. FFprobe is also required and must exist in the same folder. These components are normally bundled together in the same download. Please check the path and try again."

When does the NC Patreon go live?

On the 100K sub announcement you mentioned "...and soon, on Patreon." I'm a Patreon user and would prefer to support you guys through that platform so that I don't have to create a KoFi account.

How soon is "soon?" ?

Cheers.

Just wondering, with all the great work you both do, is there any other ways we can help you other than financially. Is there ways we can contribute to helping you produce great content?
I'm sure you have most of it covered, but if there are ways we can also help to support you in the back of house maybe there are some of us that can contribute.

  Convert NAS to DAS
Posted by: Enquiries - 08-01-2023, 12:00 AM - Forum: Before you buy Q&A - Replies (1)

I have an old QNAP TS-251. I have two 4TB drives that I want to up in it and I want to use the full 8TB for file storage. This QNAP TS-251 has failed me many times over the years so I simply do not trust it as a reliable NAS. So I basically want to make it a networked DAS. Can I do this and if so how? I hate the fact that QNAP does not use a standard file system, but I don't want to trash this TS-251 and if it can be setup as a DAS it would save me a bunch of cash until I upgrade to a 8 bay NAS. So can anyone guide me through this?

Hi - Very detailed and highly insightful content, thanks.

From my research on a Mac/PC hybrid environment for currently one user, I pretty much have settled on a Qnap Nas, most likely the TVS-472XT and populate with -4- Seagate 22TB IronWolf Pro 7200. I had briefly considered a DAS but too limiting with my two machines and client access to media for review

My Environment
-1- 2023 MacBook Pro M2
-1- Lenovo P620 ThreadRipper (will require a Thunderbolt Pcie Card)

Media BU

MAC + PC
Backblaze for off prem storage
5TB LeCie

PC
Lenovo - Acronis archiving to HotSwap removable drive (goes in fireproof safe when traveling)

I am purchasing specifically because of Thunderbolt 3, would you recommend any of the following

NVMEs or SSDs for faster access caching? - I plan to edit 4k footage directly, perhaps using proxies (Resolve) but want both options and these tend to be large files, so from one post it appears that SSDs would be better with smaller files?

Open to paid consult

Mixing Seagate IronWolf drives in a RAID5
Posted by: Enquiries - 07-31-2023, 09:30 PM - Forum: Before you buy Q&A - Replies (1)

I own a QNAP 4 bay NAS TS-431-P2 with 3 Seagate Ironwolf drives (IronWolf ST4000VN008) in a RAID5 configuration. Now I want to add the 4th drive. I have seen a Seagate IronWolf ST4000VN006 that is currently cheaper then the Seagate IronWolf ST4000VN008 drive. Should I stick to the type of drive that is already installed or can I mix the existing drives with the cheaper IronWolf ST4000VN006. As far as I know the differences between the two drives are only in cache size and RPM.

  Backup strategy
Posted by: Enquiries - 07-31-2023, 09:30 PM - Forum: Before you buy Q&A - Replies (1)

Hello and good day,
First, thank you for all the great content you’ve created, I watched a ton of your videos and learned a lot.
I am searching for the best backup strategy within budget.
Main goal is to preserve all data at any cost.
Some considerations:
My plan is to get a 4 bays NAS, maybe the DS423, the ARM one, yes ARM.
Currently offsite backups are off the table since my internet upload speed is very slow.
My current data to be backed up is about 300GB and growing fast, mostly photos and videos.
I am aware of the 3-2-1backup strategy, and I am thinking to populate the 4 bay NAS as follow:
• Fill out drive 1, 2 and 3 in a SHR pool with BTRFS and enable snapshot replication.
• Leave the 4th drive as a separate pool exclusively for backup.
• Add a USB drive for backup.
• Enable an old PC with Synology Drive sync one way to act as a third backup copy.
I would appreciate your expert toughs on this one, cheers.
