  NAS future proofing
Posted by: Enquiries - 08-03-2023, 10:30 PM - Forum: Before you buy Q&A - Replies (1)

Hello,

I've been thinking about building my own NAS, but honestly something that is already more ready out of the box and user friendly like a Synology product is perfectly fine for me. What I also do want to get right though is future proofing, specifically from a software perspective.

Essentially, once I have a NAS, the things that can go wrong in the long term are: 1) the NAS breaks: buy a new one; 2) a hard disk breaks: buy a new one; 3) software updates? My concern is that using Synology software they might stop releasing updates for it when a piece of hardware is not the newest, thus kind of forcing you to buy new hardware only because the software doesn't receive updates.

If this is the case, do you think it is a problem to be concerned about? Is it too risky to keep Synology hardware with outdated software? If so, might it be best to go through the hassle of building my own NAS to have open source software that will always receive security updates?

Many thanks,

Matteo

Broken 10GBE port looking to upgrade
Posted by: Enquiries - 08-03-2023, 10:00 PM - Forum: Before you buy Q&A - Replies (1)

I have a TVS-672xT that is going to get RMA'd for a broken 10GBe port. It currently runs QTS. I was going to upgrade to one of the new higherend models that has dual 10GBe ports, but I canceled my order on amazon because I see it runs QTShero and I would not be able to just migrate my drives... Big headache. Is there a QNAP 8-12 bay NAS that runs QTS (not hero) and also has dual 10GBe ports (preferable on a NCI that I could just swap out if it breaks and not have to send the whole unit in on RMA) that I would be able to just plug my current HDDs into?

  Best Home Media Server
Posted by: Enquiries - 08-03-2023, 10:00 PM - Forum: Before you buy Q&A - Replies (1)

Hi follow your work for years and love it thank you. I currently have a Synology DS718+ and it works fine but won't play 2160 video's via Plex. I am now looking at using Jellyfin as that will play that rate video but still to work out how to view remotely. My question is though should I update to a better Synology or should I possibly look at building my own unit to serve my media better? it's confusing and not sure what direction to go if you could help please. thank you Smile

  First NAS
Posted by: Enquiries - 08-03-2023, 05:30 PM - Forum: Before you buy Q&A - Replies (1)

Hi,

I’m looking into buying my first NAS. I’m mainly buying it as a an automatic backup solution for my files with the occasional file retrieval. In other words to store pictures/videos, music project backups and computer file backups. What I’m aiming for is automatic backup at reasonable price. As soon as I’m working on something that needs speed I’ll have it locally on my mac or use my external SSD drive.

I also need a NAS that can automatically backup to a cloud service like iDrive in case my house burns down haha.

What would recommend?

Thanks a lot!
/J

  Data Backup for Photo/Video/Sound studio
Posted by: Enquiries - 08-03-2023, 03:30 PM - Forum: Before you buy Q&A - Replies (1)

I've been doing as much research as I can manage after losing a precious harddrive recently. I have many years of photographs, video and sound recordings, both personal and part of my professional art practice. I need both active backup for current files and a long term archive data solution for my many years of data.

Up to know, I have a mess of harddrives with some poorly organized redundancy spread across various drives...

I was looking into a NAS, which would be nice for the network benefits of sharing files, but this is not my priority. Perhaps I simply need a DAS setup to work fast on my files and have a short/medium term back up running constantly...?

My priorities are data redundancy first, speed second.

Thank you for offering this free advice, it is much appreciated.

Synology DS423+ for plex with 20tb drives?
Posted by: Enquiries - 08-03-2023, 07:30 AM - Forum: Before you buy Q&A - Replies (1)

Heya, sorry to bother you with stupid questions, I've two 20tb WD reds that I have connected to a windows server at the moment due to rising power costs I want to move them to a nas.

I'm trying to find a powerefficient nas that can run plex and has room for upgrades. The DS423+ seems to fit the bill but it doesn't officially support WD Red 20TB drives.
Does this mean I'm out of luck or can I unofficially use them with risks?

QNAP TVS-672XT - Setup SSD Caching
Posted by: Enquiries - 08-03-2023, 01:30 AM - Forum: Before you buy Q&A - Replies (1)

So I just ordered the 672XT with 6 20 Tb Seagate Ironwolf Pro HDDs, Two Samsung 970 EVO Plus SSD 2TB NVMe M.2, 32 Gb RAM upgrade. I'm going to connect this directly to my Mac Studio through Thunderbolt 4 (3) and have it connected to the Ethernet in my office which is likely only 100Base T. I'll be doing video editing on my Mac Studio and I'm hoping to do remote video editing from home on my 16" MacBook Pro with M2 Max. I want to configure the HDDs in either RAID 5 or 6 (recommendation?) and use the 970 EVOs in RAID 1 for Caching. For video editing, is this the best setup? What are your recommendations? And are the 6HDDs and 2 970's One big storage pool? Or Two pools? Any help is greatly appreciated.

  DROBO Chassis and Extra HDDs
Posted by: Enquiries - 08-02-2023, 10:30 PM - Forum: Before you buy Q&A - Replies (1)

Hello! My name is Ty. I'm with a film/TV prod company and appreciate what you do.

Recently, we upgraded to Synology for main stuff and took a bunch of DROBOs offline, along with the HDDs in them(perfectly fine and work). I was wondering if there a way to turn an old DROBO (5n, 5D, etc...) into a simple "external drive enclosure"?
Or better yet into a 3rd party RAID capable "external drive enclosure"? Like, just clearing all DROBO software.
We have several Drobo cases/"chassis" just sitting here and the HDDs do go with them but we really want to get out of the Drobo software side. Do you know if this conversion is even possible??

Alternatively, we'd just buy some OWC drive enclosures but want to save the money. We'd use them as backups btw.

  Migration from 918+ to 920+/923+
Posted by: Enquiries - 08-02-2023, 08:30 AM - Forum: Before you buy Q&A - Replies (1)

Hi, I have a dead DS918+. It doesn’t have any blinking blue lights, and it’s just dead when I press the power button – have bought a new power adaptor and I’m currently waiting for it to be delivered.

In the event my 918+ is not reparable, I’ve started researching the updated versions of the 4-bay NAS (i.e. 920+ and 923+) to replace my 918+ in hopes of just doing a HDD migration to get everything up and running again.

My current HDD configuration is:
Bay 1: 16TB Ultrastar WUH721816ALE6L4
Bay 2: 4TB IronWolf ST4000VN008 (SC60)
Bay 3: 16TB Ultrastar WUH721816ALE6L4
Bay 4: 12TB ST12000NE008 (EN02)

I’ve checked the HDD compatibility lists for 920+ and 923+, and 923+ doesn’t seem to support my Ultrastars?

Is it possible to migrate my HDDs from 918+ to 923+ even though the HDDs I have HDDs that are not on the compatibility list for the 923+?

Given my use case (Synology drive for files, WebDAV, LAN streaming) would it be better to opt for an older 920+ or 923+?
