  QNAP Failure
Posted by: Enquiries - 03-02-2024, 05:30 PM - Forum: Before you buy Q&A - Replies (1)

I have a QNAP TS451+ which has died (motherboard failure). I have moved the disks to a TS453A, but while it recognises the disks (RAID5) it tells me they are encrypted and need a password or key file to unlock. I do not recall setting this up and none of my standard passwords work. QNAP say the password was likely saved in flash memory on the dead box.

Do you know of recovering the data that was on this RAID array? Foolishly, this was the only backup...

  SSD NAS
Posted by: Enquiries - 03-02-2024, 09:00 AM - Forum: Before you buy Q&A - Replies (1)

I currently have an iMac 2015 which I am going to be replacing with a new M3 iMac. I didn’t want to include more than the 256Gb that’s included. So wanted to use a NAS drive store all my other data including movies, photos, documents etc. I previously had a couple of WD 2Tb hard drives to keep my movies on but they died & were unrecoverable without sieving more than a few thousand to do so. So I’m looking at the Flashtor 6 for my home setup & would appreciate some help/advice as exactly what SSD’s to use or indeed whether this is the setup I should be going for.

Please help.

Many thanks,

Kou.

  DS923+ config
Posted by: Enquiries - 03-02-2024, 08:30 AM - Forum: Before you buy Q&A - Replies (1)

Awesome videos! Thank you

I just bought 923+ with 4 x 4TB, 20 gb memory (4+16) and 2x nvme 400gb

My question is if I should go with raid 10 or 6 in terms of performance keeping in mind 2 ssd for caching.
what do you think? should I setup ssd as raid 0 or 1 for r/w cache?
I am mostly working on simple doc doc and large pdf files with photos of case files.

I need only about 2 tb of storage so raid 6 and 10 are future proof for me with 4x4tb (i get almost 3 times storage I need with raid 6 or 10).

cheers
Maciek

  Entry plex 4K nas
Posted by: Enquiries - 03-02-2024, 12:00 AM - Forum: Before you buy Q&A - Replies (1)

Howdy,
I’ve been looking for a while for an NAS system that would work as a Plex server for myself, and my wife. At most, there will be two people using it at once. I’ve ripped a lot of my 4K Blu-rays and compressed them into H.265. We’re looking at getting a new 4K telly in September, but for now it’s just 1080p. So we’ll need a NAS that can handle transcoding down to 1080p. We dont plan on using it for anything else.
I recently saw your review of the new Terramaster F4 424 and that seems great, but it’s a little outside my price range at the moment.
As a side question, do you sell any of the NAS systems you have to review? I was wondering if I could buy it off of you cheap? (You don’t ask you don’t get)

Really enjoying the content, keep up the great work

Cheers,
Louie

  Choosing wisely, love the videos!

Uses:
TimeMachine for MacBook Pros… 2.5TB now, 4TB soon
Backups of iPhones to stop paying Apple for iCloud.
Store tons of photos so they are organized and searchable instead of in racks of DVDs
Setup Filecloud/Onecloud to get rid of Dropbox, etc.
Be able to run Home Assistant, Pi Hole, etc.
Be a data hoarder so I can snapshot systems to revert to after upgrades if needed, etc.
Setup a Plex server
Space to be a friend’s “cloud backup” and he can be mine

Plan:
Invest in large & extendable NAS to be future proof-ish
Probably at least 4 bay but with just two 20TB HDDs
Get IronWolf Pro, Red Pro or N300 Pro so they will last
Have M.2 NVMe slots for apps or performance
Have 10G Eth capability for the future

Problems:
The DS1522+ seems good except Plex
The DS423+ is weak on RAM and no 10G

Choice:
The DS1522+ is the most future proof and Plex can be run on another device that uses the NAS for the storage

Do you agree, is my logic sound, suggestions?
Thanks for this!!

  NAS OS
Posted by: Enquiries - 03-01-2024, 04:30 PM - Forum: Before you buy Q&A - Replies (1)

Hello,

I have recently setup an Asustor 5404T NAS. This is my first NAS system. I installed 2 16TB HDD's for storage. I recently came across a video that recommended installing the NAS OS on a SSD for a quieter and faster system. The video recommended taking all of the mechanical drives out first to install the OS on the SSD.

My question is can I take out the 2 drives I have installed - which have the OS and my media installed on, install a SSD, and then install the OS on it and re-insert the HDD's? Will I have to format the drives all over again with the OS conflict?

Thanks!

  New QNAP NAS
Posted by: Enquiries - 02-29-2024, 07:30 PM - Forum: Before you buy Q&A - Replies (1)

Dear Sir(s),

Please can you advise on which drives are suitable for QNAP TBS-464-8G. From what I have researched, the perfect drives for this machine are Gen 3x2. However, I can only find Gen 3x4. Can you suggest any 3x2 drives and where I can find them, or the Gen 3x4 alternatives. FYI, I've had a Synology drive for the past 15 years, and the one I have now is now outdated (DS215j).

Thanks in advance, Dean Morton
