Syncthing setup on QNAP ? |

I have Syncthing running on my Synology and 3 Windows computers. While I did have a few teething issues, all of the syncs are running fine now. So, I tried to introduce my QNAP NAS into the mix but it's not going anywhere. I'm sure that my folder path is correct ( /share/volume_name/sync_target_folder ). I suspect that it may be a permission issue because nothing it being written to the target folder on the QNAP including the .stfolder . But, according to various post on the Syncthing forum, no special permissions are needed on a QNAP NAS. ( On the Synology, Syncthing creates a system user and that user must be given permissions to the folders wanting to be sync'd.) I have searched the Syncthing forum for a solution but have exhausted all avenues.
Anyone setup Syncthing on a QNAP NAS that can point me in the right direction ?

Looking for advice, i have an old desktop, and a few 500gb-2tb drives. I want to learn/practice: Proxmox vs Trunas Scale. I know i can run Trunas inside of Proxmox, but do i need to? Proxmox isn't a great NAS solution, but should i go baremetal with trunas or ??
any thoughts would be greatly appreciated.
thanks

A freelance developer working from home. Now doing manual backups of:
1. Work and important files to cloud.
2. Full PC backup (compressed) to external SSD every 2 months.
Other files and media: stored in multiple 2.5" external HDDs.
Current media server: using router's USB sharing (DLNA) with 1TB SSD.
My work PC has 4TB SSD and 64GB RAM; on 2.5GbE LAN. Using TPLink Deco BE85. The Deco and PC are in my bedroom.
Undecided whether I should build a Synology NAS. Looking at DS1522+ with 10GbE upgrade. Storage pools: 1 HDD + 1 a SSD.
The NAS will be in my bedroom, serving as: backup repository for work PC, as media and file server. Concerned over potential noise at night, disturbing sleep.
Undecided over HDDs: Seagate Ironwolf (downside: warranty starts from manufactured date, difficult customer service) vs WD Red (WDDA flagging drives as Warning after 3 years) vs Synology.

Drives for Lincstation N1 |

Hi, I'm getting the linkcstation N1 (to replace my old WD EX4) and I'm new to Unraid. I'll use this NAS mostly as file share, docs but primarily to store movies to be played on Kodi running on Google TV and/or Nvidia Shield (both on Ethernet).
Looking for suggestions on number/type/size of drives to get 8TB (later 12TB) effective storage and how to configure them. It's difficult to find info on a typical/common setup without getting religious about it. Appreciate your help.

Thanks in advance for the offer of free advice. I am new to NAS but have spent the last couple days reading and still not sure on where to start. I have about 1TB in audio files (mp3 and FLAC) and about the same in photos and videos. Primarily I want to access my music library on my macbook without plugging in an external hard drive. I'd also like to access my photos and videos, but no particular requirement for face recognition or anything like that. So fairly simple needs but my budget is limited. I'm looking at used Synology and QNAP enclosures with used drives but this is where I could use some advice - on my budget am I better of getting a newer enclosure and smaller storage (with a view to replacing the drives in the future) or and older enclosure with higher capacity disks? Any suggestions would be welcome and I apologise if this has been covered somewhere already.
I overestimated my storage needs with scaling in mind but again, grateful for any advice.
Cheers,
Tom

I was literally looking to upgrade since 10 this morning (saw ur new 23/24 review few hrs later)... mind reader. Can you give a recommendation. Upgrading from TS-253B 8gb ram, maybe want 4 bay? and use Plex Pass and CCTV. Have a PI4 home assistant w/ cameras (wanting storage). Wanted to hopefully future proof for a few years, max out NAS specs. QNAP is first NAS, bought based on ur review years ago.. Thanks and cheers!

Need Guidance on Basic Starter NAS |

Hi! I’m planning to finally get a NAS in January and I’m researching my options. I’ve already decided on Synology after looking at reviews/demos of DSM, advice from people I know, etc but I’m not sure what would be a good fit. I’m a photographer/sometimes videographer and a bit of a mild datahoarder/archivist. I’m looking for something simple to replace an external 2.5” 5TB WD drive that I’ve been using for a while. I don’t need VMs/Docker, I already have PCs for that. It would be just for bulk/archival storage, not a NAS to work from. Only extra task I’d be wanting is a Time Machine server for my Macs. I may want to try Synology Photos but it’s not likely I'd switch from my current photo manager. I’m looking at either the DS223j or the DS223 for the doubled RAM and black casing. Would these models would be fine for these needs? I’m good on finding drives myself. Thank you very much!
