Extending SHR storage pool over to a DX517 expansion unit risky?
Posted by: Enquiries - 12-16-2023, 10:30 AM - Forum: Before you buy Q&A - Replies (1)

At my home there is a DS920+ with an expansion unit. I am really satisfied with the DS920+, but i need some more storage. I have 4 slots open on the expansion unit, one slot is taken up by a single disk that serves the synology surveillance setup. I would like to expand the original pool over to the expansion unit and just add a few harddisks there, but online i can find conflicting information about how risky that would be if either the NAS or the expansion unit would stop funcioning. Would the whole pool be corrupted and unrecoverable? Or would i just be able to replace the expansion unit and continue as before?
I could ofcourse just set up a new storage volume just with disks that are located on the dx517, but that seems like a waste of space becouse of the extra redundant HDD i would need for that. I've heard you mention this quickly in one of your video's, but i cant find any deeper dive into this topic anywhere on the internet.

Thank you!

  moving data between asusutors
Posted by: Enquiries - 12-15-2023, 02:00 PM - Forum: Before you buy Q&A - Replies (1)

I liked your Asustor vids so much now I have two, but I can't seem to move folders full of data between them
They don't see each other on the network
I don't like moving huge amounts of data between them using my PC because it slows it down to the point of being unusable, even for my 8 core processor
How can I move data more effortlessly?
Please Help!

4 Bay NAS and Plex server
Posted by: Enquiries - 12-14-2023, 11:30 AM - Forum: Before you buy Q&A - Replies (1)

I have a Plex Server with data on 2 external USBs, now I am planning to have a 4 bay NAS with 48TB Raid 5 based.

- My first question is whether Plex Server easily read media data hosted on NAS via ethernet cable or data drives should be directly connected to server (SATA, PCIE, USB) to Plex Server ?

- Second question is whether is there any NAS available which has network connectivity and as well as direct connectivity via USB C ?

NAS for use with Plex Server
Posted by: Enquiries - 12-13-2023, 12:00 AM - Forum: Before you buy Q&A - Replies (1)

I'm looking at buying the QNAP 4 Bay NAS with 12TB Storage. Do you think this is a good choice for Plex. Also, I heard that QNAP has had some security issues. Is that still an issue? Thanks for your help.

Wanting to start a NAS for multimedia at home
Posted by: Enquiries - 12-12-2023, 11:30 PM - Forum: Before you buy Q&A - Replies (1)

Been using multiple portable drives for years now. As movies are growing larger in size and the drives growing older, performance is starting to slow. I've been out of the loop for a couple years so need something fairly simple to help get me set while I learn things. Been looking at the DS224+, but just want to know if that's the right thing for me, or if you may have a better suggestion.

  NAS migration advice
Posted by: Enquiries - 12-12-2023, 02:30 PM - Forum: Before you buy Q&A - Replies (1)

Hi, I saw your video on Plex and the Synology DS423+ and it looks like it would fit my purposes. I'm a long time Plex user and and I currently have all media on a Synology DS418J and Plex server on my PC, along with Sonarr, Radarr etc. I want to move all media and servers to a new NAS but I'm not sure how to migrate from the current NAS to a new one without buying new drives and recreating everything. The DS418J is not an Intel chip and the Synology website says HD migration isn't supported? What path would you recommend?

Thanks!

NAS storage for photos and backup
Posted by: Enquiries - 12-12-2023, 02:00 PM - Forum: Before you buy Q&A - Replies (1)

Hi
I have a small photo collection I want to maintain and backup and share access to the NAS with my wife and her family (2-4 users max).
The collection is about 500GB in size and our collection is growing at about 1TB yearly
I'm technically savy (Linux user) and would like to get to an affordable solution ideally out of the box, but I am prepared to do some tinkering with docker containers.
Fatures I need:
1. Stable and safe backup
2. All data (available) including face tags and other storage generated metadata as I'm trying to avoid vendor lock in by software (got burned on Google Photos)
3. Automated face tagging
4. Support for existing face tag format
-Currently using XMP sidecar files generated in Digikam for face tags
-Also using Google photos export with their JSON files for face taga
5. Open standards / Open source software if possible

  NAS Plex Server
Posted by: Enquiries - 12-12-2023, 12:30 PM - Forum: Before you buy Q&A - Replies (1)

I need to retire an old Drobo S which currently has 3x 8TB and 2 x 4TB drives installed.
I currently use an old 2012 MacMini as a Plex Server but am hoping an up to date NAS will provide better performance, although I'm not sure on this.
I want the ability to mix drives like the Drobo allowed.

  Synology DS423+ expand problem
Posted by: pascanu - 12-12-2023, 11:33 AM - Forum: Technical Support - Replies (2)

Situation:
- had a DS 216+ with 2 x 3TB drives
- got a new DS 423+ and set it up with 2 new 4TB drives in SHR
- when I try to add the 2 old 3TB drives to it it says I cannot because they are too small

I thought you could mix different size drives in a SHR configuration, there's even a SHR calculator that says that with the drives I have I should get a total of 9.1GB storage.

What am I missing?
TIA
