  Jonsbo N5 sata cables
Posted by: Enquiries - 02-20-2025, 06:00 PM - Forum: Before you buy Q&A - Replies (1)

Hello Nas Compare team,

I'm planning on doing a Jonsbo N5 build, but not sure about what length sata cables to order.
I want to use a 4 bundle sata for horizontal disks and a 8 bundles sata for vertical, to be connected to 2 asm1166 bridges at 6th and 7th pcie slots.

Between 50cm and 100cm, what would be your recommendation for each?

Thank you

suggestion: 2-4 bay NAS for home backups, media server and some tinkering
Posted by: Enquiries - 02-20-2025, 05:00 PM - Forum: Before you buy Q&A - Replies (3)

I've been using a Syn DS413 for years and want to upgrade. Looking for a turnkey NAS with 2 or 4 bays. My main use cases are: 1) network storage of personal/media files, that doubles down as a media server for a smart tv/speakers; 2) torrent client; 3) run some containers in the future (cannot now)

I want something x86 based that I can run some containers on, which I cant do now. A nice-to-have would be some sort of dual-boot mechanism so I could install TrueNAS or something and tinker on my own time - but not sure if this even exists. 2.5GBe is nice to have, 10Gbe not needed.

I'm overall happy with Syn but the walled garden + dated hardware on current models + your comments about their move to proprietary hardware and enterprise put me off quite a bit. On the other hand, I do love their stability, ease of use, feature completeness (not that I use a lot of it). From my own research, I am pending towards the QNAP TS-464 but wanted to hear your thoughts. TY for the advice!!!!

Inquiry about which hardware to get for a NAS build.
Posted by: Enquiries - 02-20-2025, 02:00 PM - Forum: Before you buy Q&A - Replies (1)

Hi guys, I'm looking to build a NAS server for home use. I plan to run TrueNAS. I already purchased 6 harddisks for a raidz2 pool. Use cases for the system will be storage of my linux iso collection, and docker host for a bunch of apps like home assistant, adguard or pi-hole, plex or JF, the *arr apps, immich, maybe some game servers, password vault, and a few others. I'm looking to get pointers as to which hardware - case included - would be suited for this. A requirement is at least 2.5GBASE-T support as I will be upgrading my home network (currently 1Gbit). Any guidance you can provide would be very much appreciated. Thanks in advance for your time!
Greets, Matt

  ISCI LUN
Posted by: Enquiries - 02-20-2025, 01:35 PM - Forum: Before you buy Q&A - Replies (1)

Dear NasCompares, I have Synology DS3622+ and am thinking of working with ASCI LUN for my laptop for extra storage. Setting it up went great (thanks to your videos!) and I can access it on my laptop.

My questions (which is actually generally one big question Tongue) are: where is the data stored on my NAS? Can I access it / can I see the files? Can I add files to the LUN it via the NAS, so that my laptop will be able to see/read/access it?

TL;DR: I have set-up ASCI LUN, but don't really know what to do with it now.

Thank you so much!

Best regards,

Bart

  TVS-h1688X replacement schedule
Posted by: Enquiries - 02-20-2025, 04:35 AM - Forum: Before you buy Q&A - Replies (1)

I currently have a Synology DS3622xs+ but I am considering swapping to the QNAP TVS-h1688X. That said, the QNAP model was released several years ago and I wonder if a refresh is on the way. Any rumors?

I really like my Synology, but I do not want to stay locked into a brand and series that wants to try to force or coerce you to buy their overpriced branded drives and I would rather make the switch now than pay a terrible price later.

  NAS Upgrade for Plex
Posted by: Enquiries - 02-20-2025, 12:00 AM - Forum: Before you buy Q&A - Replies (1)

Hello! I have a Plex server for my family all in one house. I have a QNAP TS-451+ NAS setup with a 20TB drive for hosting files, another 20TB with weekly backups (it doesn't change often), and an SSD for the Plex library and OS.

I'd like to update to a NAS that allows for better expansion options. I'd prefer a minimum 6 bay NAS, or if smaller, room for an NVME drive for the OS and Plex library. The thing is - nothing seems really worth the funds and give me the confidence that I'll avoid buffering in Plex.

One big question I've been wondering - should I have the NAS be primarily for storage instead of making it do Plex as well? I see these tiny PCs all around with pretty integrated graphics that can do some decent transcoding, and they're just a couple hundred dollars. Obviously, all in one is convenient for setup. But it's nice to be able to build something where if the Plex server needs to be upgraded I'm not upgrading the whole storage area. Would love your thoughts on this.

  Lacie 6Big HDD
Posted by: Enquiries - 02-19-2025, 12:35 AM - Forum: Before you buy Q&A - Replies (3)

The Lacie 6Big compatibility chart maxes out at 18TB Iron Wolf Pro drives. Those are apparently in high demand and unavailable through the recommended retailers.

If paired with 18TB drives in a raid5 configuration do you think there would be an issue using a 20TB drive instead?

I know the system would only see it as an 18TB drive but not certain that it would actually work.

How to start Aoostar WTR Pro NAS Mini PC AMD Ryzen 7 5825U
Posted by: Enquiries - 02-18-2025, 07:35 PM - Forum: Before you buy Q&A - Replies (1)

Dear NAScompares team,

I just received my Aoostar WTR Pro NAS Mini PC AMD Ryzen 7 5825U 16GB DDR4 RAM 512GB SSD from Banggood and this is the first time I will use NAS. I have a MacBook Air 2017 with Monterey 12 macOS and I would like to setup the system. My goal would be to connect my MacBook to the NAS and manage downloads through my notebook. Especially to download movies via torrents and stream through Plex. Also to manage photos/videos from my iPhone (I do have iPhone, iPad and Apple Watch as well), to have a backup copy, etc. At the moment I added 3x3TB WD Red NAS HDD 3,5” to the NAS. Could you please guide me step by step how to setup the “system”? Is there any instruction which could help me? Any kind of support would be highly appreciated.

Thank you in advance!

Kind Regards,
Péter
