Which NAS should I buy? |

Dear NASCompares,
I'm planning on buying my first NAS and I'm uncertain of which specs I need.
I'd use it mostly for storage (RAID 5?), and as a media player for 4K movies, tv series and music (mostly local but I'd like the possibility to stream it from somewhere else).
I'm pretty sure I'm going to use Jellyfin for all this stuff except music, but I'll sort that later, because I want to be able to listen my music with my Hi-Fi system which can use also Ethernet/Wi-Fi via DTS Play-Fi.
I don't know if transcoding will be necessary, my bandwidth is mostly free (1Gb local, 10Mb upload to internet) and I'll probably use TV boxes where needed.
I'm also a 3D artist with a pretty big library with textures and 3D models, with work files too which can be heavy sometimes.
I was looking at QNAP, but I don't know which product to choose. I don't want to spend a lot of money on hardware I won't use, but I would like some upgradeability too, if my needs change.
Thanks!

First NAS setup for video editing |

Hi there,
I'm in the process of trying to figure out which NAS setup makes sense for my needs. We are a small video production company, two on site editors (in office), one offsite editor (work from home). In total we need roughly 160 TB to work with, which should last the next 3-4 years. I've been looking at the QNAP TVS-h1688X-W1250-32G-US, using only 8 bays for now with 20TB drives (Seagate 20TB IronWolf Pro 7200 rpm SATA III 3.5" Internal NAS HDD (CMR) setup as a raid 5. Plan is have the additional 4 bays available for future expansion. Using Samsung 2TB 990 PRO PCIe 4.0 x4 M.2 Internal SSDs for cache. All using 10Gb connections.
I am an absolute newbie to all of this. Product support, drive speed, software, etc are all things I'd like to make sure I got covered.
I'd love to hear what is recommended or what others might use for video editing as well. Experiences, do's and dont's.
Thanks!

2Bay NAS (QNAP253E) or BeeStation Plus |

Well, I've watched so many of your videos. I think I like that QNAP 253E. Is that better than the BeeStation Plus? I tried the regular BeeStation, slow as hell. I returned it. I have fast, 300 Mbps internet speed. When you are accustomed to that, anything slow is a pain. I want fast speeds. So, in your opinion, is there anything better that’s cheaper? Is there anything significant at $400 other than the Terramaster?
I appreciate your opinion. You know your stuff. Thank you

I'm building a NAS for home use that will be accessed by multiple friends for Plex streaming and AI workloads. My setup includes the following components:
? Intel Core i7-14700F (Processor)
? Noctua L12S (Low Profile Air Cooler)
? Gigabyte Z790M Aorus Elite AX mATX (WiFi + Bluetooth)
? Corsair 32GB DDR5 (16x2) 6000MHz (Memory)
? Nvidia Quadro RTX A2000 ADA 12GB (GPU for AI tasks)
? 8 x 4TB Seagate IronWolf 7200RPM ST8000VN004 (Storage)
? Corsair RM850e ATX 3.0 Fully Modular 80 Plus Gold (PSU)
? Intel X540-T2 PCIe 10G Dual Port LAN Card
? 1x NVMe (400GB) + 1x 2.5" SSD (WD)
? USB 3.2 Gen 1 / Thunderbolt support preferred
? OS: Hex OS
Case Options:
I'm currently considering Fractal Design Node 804 and SilverStone CS351 for this NAS build. However, Jonsbo cases are not available in my region, so I need to choose between these two.
Which case should I go with ?
Thanks in advance for your insights! ?

Stumbled across your awesome site. I want to build a home nas setup primarily for hosting movies and shows for us to stream through plex on a xbox series x and 4k apple tv at home. 12tb to start and growth would be nice. Streaming quality atleast at 1080 or higher . Im big on redundancy and data protection loss. We would also use it as a minimal file and photo backup location.

Is this SSD Caching worth it? QNAP TS-x53D |

Added 128GB of SSD cache to a 4TB RAID-1 array on TS-x53D (NVMe > PCIe x4). This server as cache for my VMs secondary storage LUNs (iscsi @2.5Gb/s), for images and configuration files (NFS), and for syslogs and packet captures (SMB). I don't yet know if it's an improvement really.. but I am thinking further configuration is order. The SSD is runnning on its own RAID array (This might need to be reconsidered) and under cache acceleration with LUNs and shares under "cached storage". Set to Cache-Type: Read Write and Cache Mode: All I/O. Was this worth it?
I paid about $10.00 USD total for a no-name expansion card on ebay - which to my surprise actually worked! Was it worth it or am I wasting my time?? Cheers!

Asustor ADM |

I have a AS6704T NAS. Volume 1 is installed on NVME #1. I believe that the ADM software is installed on Volume 1. Is that correct. If so, can I easily add another NVME on slot #2 and change Volume 1 from single to Raid 1?
Thanks

SYNONYME NAS UPGRADE |

Hi there,
I own a Synology 920+ with 4x12tb (SHR setup so 32tb available) for Plex usage.
Since the NAS is almost full (1tb left), I am thinking of an upgrade.
I have 30~40 users but around 5 streams maximum at the same time some days of the week, I always try to upload H264 files so users won’t need transcoding but sometimes for some reasons transcoding is required.
I am thinking futureproof NAS, something around 8 bays so I can move my 4x12tb and add 12tb disks gradually.
What would you recommend ? I heard the DX517 extension is not a good idea here.
Thank you
Sinclair

Do you review NAS units that work with Apple’s Time Machine? Apple has a Time Capsule for NAS backup until about 2018. Still miss it.
Thx for your time.
