Backup of iSCSI |

Greetings,
I am configuring an Asustor Lockerstor Gen 3. I currently have two volumes (1 - NVME, 2 - HD) setup. Is there a way to backup the contents of an iSCSI target/LUN?
I can setup snapshots but my understanding is that these are stored on the same volume as the share.
I am trying to figure out my backup strategy. I would like to use the NVME volume for primary storage with a backup on a disk based volume. Then I would like to sync the backup volume with a USB based device. I'm just not understanding how to backup the iSCSI files.
Thank you,
Jeff

I watched your setup of synology and qnap and talk of starting small and expanding.
main use will be computer backups and media.
On both videos you mentioned adding drives later.
BUT I have questions you didn't cover.
Is one brand better at adding drives and setting up and not taking days to reconfigure?
pop in a drive and an hour later all is done?
Both seemed to be more than able to scrape media data. But qnap looks more polished and easier to accomplish, is this correct?
How must tv season data, name etc be formatted for this to work?

Advice: TrueNas + Plex (HW) hardware build help/recommendation |

Awesome content on your YT channel!!! I've been running Xpenology (Intel i3 and i5) (mainly Plex and BT purposes) for about 10 years now and wish to move to something like TrueNas (core? Scale?) as my server is running out of space (currently have about 80TB of media). Would like to run new Intel with integrated GPU (HW Transcode), 10-16 concurrent streams, and start a few VM's (learning). I currently have a 2 x 1000m internet line, one directly to server and other for my router/home devices. Case choice probably Fractal Design or similar. Hope you guys can give me some advice on what hardware I should get for this new build. Thanks in advance

Nas 4k transcoding + high quality audio |

Hello, I'm new to this, and I'm looking to buy my first NAS device. The synology products interest me a ton because of the out of the box solution without having to configure a ton with my own custom server. I love their app / docker capability. So, I'm leaning towards those.
I'm mainly using this NAS as a media server that I'd like to get the highest possible quality of video / audio from. I'd also like to use it for some data storage and running of game servers. I'm running into some confusion / uncertainty.
I am seeing a lot of info about probably needing to buy a mini PC to server the data. Are there any synology solutions that would allow me to just get the NAS? If I do need a mini PC to server the media, do I just connect that device through HDMI to my tv, then connect to the NAS from it? Would I not be able to use a remote?
Thanks for the help!

I am new to NASCompare - but not new to using NAS (as a home enthusiast).
I bought a new QNAP TS-509 Pro 16 years ago (!) - which is still working fine with 5 x 6TB Ironwolf
I also upgraded / bought another QNAP - the QNAP TS-669 Pro which is also working fine with 4 x 8TB WD and 2 x 12TB Ironwolf
Plus (and don't laugh) I went a bit crazy during COVID and built some PCs which for gaming but also Chia farming and ostensibly some backup machines because I just has old processors, memory and drives hanging around - so why not....
Long story short - I really need to retire some of the 7 PCs, and also that old QNAP ...
In terms what I want ... well I love tech and setting and and playing with latest HW and SW - so alongside media streaming, I want fast photo and video editing access from a NAS solution - with access from multiple PCs/Macs (otherwise I would just go for a big USB4 based DAS) - I might also want to do handle some AI workloads in media processing app.
The Minisforum N5 Pro looks great - but it also seem like its not going to be available until later in H2 2025.
So... in the meantime I'm thinking I can either sit tight and wait for N5 Pro.
OR Build a possible interim NAS - something I can play with TrueNAS / UnRaid for the first time
- use existing case / PSU - maybe even AMD 3600 Ryzen on AM4 Mobo which I have spare. (alternatively I could buy a cheap more NAS friendly Mobo+CPU to put in it)
- buy a JONSBO case - maybe N2 or N3 and buy m-ITX board + CPU - the idea being it would be more compact, quieter, power efficient than re-purposing tower plus Ryzen 3600.
- buy a bare bones case - and go higher spec on mobo + CPU and basically build something better than the N5 Pro now... (then it wouldn't be interim.....)
Regardless of option - I will be checking SMART and FARM drive info to make sure I know which of my many HDDs may be at risk of imminent failure
I also have a 10 TB of Samsung EVO SATA SSDs (and a couple of NVMEs) - which I would really like to be using in my network storage solution setup asap.
Bit of an open ended question to the community - but welcome feedback please!
p.s. it looks like old QNAP actually sell for decent $$$ - I could get a $300+ for the TS-509 (especially with 30TB of drives in it) - but I'm wondering if I could use as a remote site backup option [though I don't really like opening up QNAP to external access...] - maybe just easier to wipe and sell - and I can take weekly backup into the office or something... thoughts?
p.p.s I'll probably leave the Chia Farm PC plugged in with the 80TB plots - it makes me enough to buy the odd coffee....(if I ever sold the XCH)

Is there a way or program for qnap that will hunt duplicate files in this case photos from my Nas qmaggie is a mess as it stands and I'm a novice trying to learn the do's and don'ts. I set up 100% from your older tutorials on YouTube but must have missed something and rather than start over I would like to try to fix my issue. thank you for your help and dedication for helping people with their Nas. looking forward to your response

Upgrading Drives or Expanding |

Hello Gentleman -
I recently lost my DS1515+ to the Synology Gods but thankfully was able to swap and move the drives into a new 1522+ which is running amazingly well. I am am getting down to my last few terabytes left on it and I'm curious your thoughts.. Should I expand the drives into an expander or should I replace the drives slowly to larger ones. I have read that when upgrading drives that you have to do 2 at a time? That's not an issue if that's the case but wondering if that is true. I am kind of limited on space to be able to use an expansion case so that's why I'm leaning towards upgrading the drives. Not to mention the drives that I did swap into the 1522+ are running well but getting old. I appreciate your thoughts in advance and as always wish you both well!
Thanks,
Rob

Hi,
Firstly thank for the videos, they are really helpful and hence got me thinking before buying.
I presently have a DS215j running 4 cameras.
I don't use the NAS for data access much as i find it too slow. I have my NAS, PC's hard wired with a simple network switch which has POE that supplies the camera.
I presently have 4 Hikivision "DS-2CD2342WD-I".
At time when reviewing my recording i get stutters and recently missed the vital section of action because the recording missed 1-2 seconds.
I believe it is time to upgrade to hopefully stop the stutter in the recording, but the generally speed up the system, allow me to use the drive for storage better, i.e. windows explorer to show folders instantly rather delayed enumeration.
The biggest improvement would be stop false recordings of the changes to the view, i.e. sunlight and maybe trees moving.
What would you advise please ?
Thanks
Peter
