Unas pro and photo backup - Enquiries - 10-03-2025

Is there a way to backup photo like the way synology does it with the photos app? So you get automatic back up with search on year's, months etc. And maybe add keyword so you can find photos by searching the key words? Just like photos on synology.

Or should I just by a synology to use the app and the store the photos on the unas pro?

Or are there other options?

With regards,

That’s a really good question and one of the key differences between Synology and UniFi UNAS right now. Synology Photos is very mature – it gives you automatic photo/video backup from mobile devices, facial recognition, keyword tagging, and timeline views (by years, months, albums). If you want something that “just works” with polished apps, Synology is still the easiest solution.

On the UniFi UNAS Pro, there isn’t an official equivalent app yet. You can, however, set up open-source tools like Immich or Photoprism in Docker. Immich in particular is designed as a self-hosted Google Photos replacement. It supports:
• Automatic uploads from iOS and Android
• Timeline view by year and month
• Face grouping and people search (still improving)
• Album creation and sharing links
• Tagging and keyword search

Photoprism goes further with AI-powered object recognition, but it can be heavier on resources. Both will run fine on a UNAS Pro since it has plenty of CPU/RAM.
