  Connecting a UPS to BOTH my PC and F4-424 Pro at once?
Posted by: Enquiries - 01-03-2025, 08:00 AM - Forum: Before you buy Q&A - Replies (1)

Hi there, Robbie/Eddie!

Is there a way I could connect a CyberPower CP1500PFCLCD to BOTH my PC and my F4-424 Pro at the same time?

I recently got my NAS up and running, and it has options to detect a connected UPS and power itself down, but my UPS only has the one USB cable that's connected to my PC already. Is there such a thing as a USB-B to 2x USB-A cable that I could buy to connect both devices to my UPS at once, or do I need to use the convoluted NUT solutions I'm seeing online if TOS 6.0 even supports such a thing?

The only other plausible solution I can think of would be to move the NAS to my sister's PC in another room and connect it to the separate UPS she has while networking everything together.

  Selecting the correct NAS
Posted by: Enquiries - 01-03-2025, 07:35 AM - Forum: Before you buy Q&A - Replies (1)

I need to move my media (movies, photos, random files, home movies) files off of a hard drive on my wife's computer. We will be using this as a plex server and a place to store photos. We really need redundancy. I was looking at the QNAP TS-453E-8G-US 4 Bay unit. I selected QNAP since Synology units look under powered and you need to use proprietary drives and ram. Is this the correct choice? I have never had a NAS before so im looking for something fairly easy to use.

  SSS for cache
Posted by: Enquiries - 01-03-2025, 12:00 AM - Forum: Before you buy Q&A - Replies (1)

Hello I’m running a ds923+ based of your recommendations and I’m quite pleased. It’s only got 4-8tb drives in there as shr 2…… with the owc 16gb memory module as well as the 10gb nic in it.

I use a few docker containers, plex, homebridge, Scrypted , lan Speedtest and stuff like that. Also I’m running surveillance station on it with 4 cams.

I’m thinking about adding a nvme for cache. What model would you recommend for my use case? And can you provide an affiliate link?

Thanks

  Plex Server Win vs QNAP Nas
Posted by: Enquiries - 01-02-2025, 10:35 PM - Forum: Before you buy Q&A - Replies (1)

My question Would it make sense to swap to Qnap instead of running Plex on the Windows 10 machine.
Essentially my Windows Machine is just running Plex and Sonarr. What do you think would be the best way to set this up?

I initially made a Plex server about 7-8 Years ago.
I used a Xeon E3-1230 v5 16gb Ram with a 1050TI.
Has been upgraded over the years to its current state of
x5 8TB WD Drives No Raid Config
x5 4TB WD Drives No Raid Config

Now I have recently acquired a
QNAP TS-1273u with a AMD RX-421ND with 32GB Ram (Can add a Quadro P1000)
x2 500gb NVME Mirrored
x6 10TB WD Drives currently Raid 6 One Pool
x6 1TB SSD
currently Raid 6 One Pool with SSD Auto Qtier Auto Tiering

Thanks!

  Which NAS motherboard to choose from
Posted by: Enquiries - 01-02-2025, 04:35 PM - Forum: Before you buy Q&A - Replies (1)

Hi,

I have been recently speed running through your videos in YT and is a subscriber (Love your videos). I am still confused on which motherboard + processor, started with the thought of going for a cheap motherboard + processor combo of topton from Ali Express, specifcally this https://vi.aliexpress.com/item/1005006393122396.html. I found it from one of your video. Looking at getting the black. The case I currently liked was the one which wolfgang shared recently over here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Jr5MjhgPz_c

The main reason I am going for intel is because for now I'll be running emby in my NAS till I get a NUC or any other mini PC. I read intel's quick sync performs really well in transcoding. So my confusing was to either go for a mother board + processor combo or buy them seperate. Also since I will eventually move emby out of NAS to a mini PC, should I get an AMD processor for ECC support?

My budget is around 500-700 CAD for the whole setup, excluding the HDD for NAS.

  NAS buying advise
Posted by: Enquiries - 01-02-2025, 02:35 PM - Forum: Before you buy Q&A - Replies (1)

Looking at buying my first NAS which will mainly be used for photo/file backup but may want to run a Plex server on it later on. Have budget of £500 but this might be able to budge. Like the idea of auto organised photos etc and some expandability. Have looked at Synology DS224+ with WD Red Plus 4TB which is within budget but dont like that I will only have 2 drives to play with. Like the idea of a DS423+ but its a bit too much money. Am I asking too much?

  Replacing NAS
Posted by: Enquiries - 01-02-2025, 01:00 PM - Forum: Before you buy Q&A - Replies (1)

I have to replace my Netgear ReadyNas Duo due to problems with the SMB1 protocol. I am primarily using my NAS as a music library and as source for backing up. Since I do not have the need for bells and whistles I am looking for a cheap solution but I find it a bit hard to navigate through the recommendations on this and other sites. The ReadyNas is a 2 bay NAS and I guess that RAID is a must. Hto swappable drives is nice to have.

My ReadyNas has been running for years and it has been very reliant. Lately, it does seem to have a speed issue when backing up from my PC. Backups are primarily data (limited storage needs) and photos (large storage needs)

Is the QNAP TS-233, Terramaster F2-223 or the Synology DS223j the best choice? Or is it worth the extra dollars to go to DS224/DS224+? I have read reviews for some time now but I just don't think I have the necessary knowledge to make a good decision. Any help is appreciated.

  selecting a simple nas and accessing it remotely
Posted by: Enquiries - 01-01-2025, 05:00 PM - Forum: Before you buy Q&A - Replies (1)

hello,

i've watche a few of your videos about the qnap ts 230 and have the following scenario;

1) i've been ripping dvds for years and have them stored on an external ssd. collectively they make up about 2 tb of data;

2) at home i have fios internet service that operates at roughly 100 gb up and down;

3) i would like to be able to remotely access my movies;

4) i do not want to dedicate a computer to the task of serving my movies;

5) my fios intenet at home utilizes a dynaic ip address system;

6) my questions are:
i . can the qnap function with a dynamic ip to provide me continuous remote access to my movies?
ii. if the dynamic ip is a problem, will using a ddns such as no-ip solve the problem/
iii. is my internet up and down speeed suffiicent to smoothly watch my movies remotely?
iv. when i remotely access my movies, does the nas system require me to access the movie and download it to my remote device or is the movie be streamed from the nas?

thanks

  Isolating part of a network
Posted by: Enquiries - 01-01-2025, 09:35 AM - Forum: Before you buy Q&A - Replies (1)

I am building an RFID reader based timing system for running races. This will be a portable system for outside.I have 2 Motorola fx7400 readers connected to a TP Link wireless router via LAN. I have set the preferred client IP addresses for each reader at 192.168.0.102 and 192.168.0.103. I did this as the readers seem to need to maintain their auto DHCP selection or they become impossible to connect to when DHCP is turned off. The problem lies in when I connect the router to the internet (both wirelessly as a range extender, (preferable as this will be how I will connect to my phone hotspot in the field)) or hardwired as a secondary router, I lose communication with my readers. I suspect the internet connection is reassigning my IP addresses but I am unsure. My question is this: How can I maintain my dedicated network of readers while gaining internet access for just my laptop? I am guessing a managed ethernet switch, or is it as simple as reassigning IP addresses? Thanks for any help!
