Help choosing first NAS or DAS (8 bay)
Posted by: Ace2377 - 04-27-2025, 05:11 AM - Forum: Before you buy Q&A - Replies (2)

Hello!

Primary use is ripping my movie disc collection to play from in 1:1 ratio. Have 450 4k's and 1,000 blu rays (and counting), so figured 8 bay would be best.  May also throw family photos/videos on, but primarily a “movie server.” Was waiting for Synology DS1825+, but the new Synology drive requirement has turned me away, as I already purchased 6 22TB WD drives. I have never used or even seen a NAS or NAS software before, so TOTAL beginner to this. I’m ok spending $2,000+ USD, but naturally want to spend as little as I can get away with, as I think my needs are fairly simple. Was looking at UGREEN DXP880 on sale for $1,275 at the moment, and also scoping out models from Asustor, QNAP, Terramaster, others?  Is there a brand/model you’d suggest for 99% movies and the rest just personal pictures/videos?  I'd love to hear from anyone who has thoughts or suggestions.  Thank you!

EDIT: After further going down this rabbit hole, someone suggest I also take a look at the DAS option since I really don't need to offer access to anyone outside my home, nor do I NEED access outside my home, or do I NEED multiple room access outside my home. Someone said it might be cheaper and easier just going the DAS route, but I can't seem to find 8 bay DAS units for this purpose no matter how hard I look; just keeps leading me to NAS units.  Any suggestions? Have seen your suggestion of the Terramaster D8-332 8bay Thunderbolt 3 for some people, and also had someone suggest to me the Terrsmaster D9-320. Not entirely sure what differences to expect for my use case, but one is almost triple the price of the other.

Looking for a NAS specifically for file storage and need remote access
Posted by: Enquiries - 04-27-2025, 04:00 AM - Forum: Before you buy Q&A - Replies (3)

Hi,

My wife is a photographer and needs lots of storage space so I'm looking to add a NAS. I'd like a 2-4-bay device. I don't care about running apps on the NAS. It would primarily be for file storage. I would map her a drive (Windows) to point to the NAS and let her store all the files she wants. I'd also use it to store my Plex library videos, but don't need it to run the Plex Server itself. If it can, fine, but it's not a requirement.

The main requirement is that it has to be accessible when she's not at home. This could be through some sort of client app or a VPN back to the home network or whatever. It just has to work.

I have a Unifi UDM SE running my home network so I would consider their UNAS if it's something I should look at. Otherwise I'm open to any brand that would make the most sense.

I'm leaning away from Synology due to their new Hardware requirements, but I would consider an older model if that would make the most sense.

Thanks!

New to NAS but quite technical
Posted by: Enquiries - 04-26-2025, 07:00 PM - Forum: Before you buy Q&A - Replies (1)

I've never had a NAS before, but am using an Nvidia Shield with a 4TB external USB drive for Plex and some minor network storage. I'm looking for a more reliable solution and to run Servarr stack in docker. I'm a software engineer, so I don't necessarily need plug&play. I was looking at 4 bays, but those already get quite expensive with disks, so maybe I should go for 2 instead. Ideally I want to spend as little as possible. It's mostly just storage, Servarr can probably run as 1 container and I might try to run Immich. That's all. Plex server can still run from the shield, with storage on the NAS.

Hi NAS Compares Team,

Thank you for all of your content its much appreciated as all ways.

I am reaching out to ask for a recommended 32GB RAM stick for a Synology DS1821+, the link on your 3rd party memory upgrade guide for 32GB points to a 16GB stick - any recommendations for alternatives in £70 budget range per stick?

Thanks,

Alek

  Q670 Question
Posted by: Enquiries - 04-26-2025, 04:35 AM - Forum: Before you buy Q&A - Replies (5)

Hi friend! Been a fan for a few months now and am finally putting together my first rack after many hours of reading and watching you. I have a quick question for you regarding the White Q670. So, I decided to go for this board as it was the best middle ground for my use case (and the ssd’s I already have)…regardless of the concerns about ASPM/low C states.

I am curious if you had any further investigation with this mobo and could share any insight? I have a note sheet with all of the bios settings to try and achieve low power. A couple people have it sounds like in the more recent half year, which some getting to C8 (but couldn’t use the two front nvme slots and something else I’m blanking on… the PCIe slot?). I’m not too worried about power tho, only running 2-3 nvme and 8 2.5” ssd’s, but am going to try. I will compile all my info for you as well!
My main concern is using the pcie slot. Hoping I can use the 8x8 feature to 10gbe x710 (efficient and ASPM compatible) and 2x nvme card

  Dual NAS Setup?
Posted by: Enquiries - 04-25-2025, 03:00 PM - Forum: Before you buy Q&A - Replies (1)

Hello, I'm interested in purchasing at least 1 synology NAS for the primary use of Surveillance station, (4) Mac backups and file storage and sharing. I would like to have cameras at two different properties and the security footage segmented with backup at alternate sites. Not sure if what permutations of NVR vs NAS to get make this possible.

Hi Nascompares,

First of all, thank you for the amazing work you do—your videos and articles have been indispensable in helping me navigate the NAS landscape. I’ve just watched your YouTube video “UGREEN NAS 1 Year Later – Should You Buy?” and it convinced me the platform could be a strong fit.

I’m a Software Engineer about to buy my very first NAS, and these are my key requirements:
• Adobe Lightroom photo catalog
• Video editing directly on the NAS/storage
• Mac backups (Time Machine)
• Running Docker containers
• Running virtual machines
• Home video streaming

I’d also like straightforward remote access and easy file-sharing so I can finally cancel the various cloud-storage subscriptions I’m still paying for.

Right now I’m considering the UGREEN NASync DXP4800 Plus paired with 2 × Seagate IronWolf drives (8 TB or 10 TB each).

Does that sound like a solid setup for my workload, or would you recommend something different?

Thanks again for all the advice you’ve already shar

  Advise on first NAS build
Posted by: Enquiries - 04-25-2025, 04:35 AM - Forum: Before you buy Q&A - Replies (1)

I’m looking to build my first NAS. I am somewhat techy, just enough to know I’m punching above my weight a little on this. I’m building this primarily as a PLEX media server, it will also run Sonarr/Radarr/etc and some torrenting. I already have 40+TB of media, so I need lots of storage, and we have about eight close friends/families that access Plex often.

I thought about a pre-built option, but I think to futureproof and maximize bang for buck, DIY is the best option. The build I’m thinking:
Case - Jonsbo N5
Motherboard - i3-N305
Processor - Intel i5 1350
RAM - TEAMGROUP Elite DDR5 32GB (2x16GB) 5600Mhz
Fans - Noctura NF-P12
Power - Unsure
Other - M.2 to 6 SATA Expansion Adaptor
OS - Unraid

Any help would be appreciated - if you have any recommendations or anything I’m missing? Is this setup overkill? I don't know what I don't know - I am fearful I'll get so far into this and it will not work, and I'll have no idea how to fix it! Thanks!
