  Starter NAS
Posted by: Enquiries - 07-07-2024, 10:35 PM - Forum: Before you buy Q&A - Replies (1)

Hello! I hope this message finds you well. I have been looking at buying my first NAS since last October, and have followed this channel since around the same time to learn as much as I can while I saved up the money for a purchase I will be happy with for the foreseeable future.

I have a good amount of experience working with Linux distros and servers as a part of my career field, but am hesitant to buy something with difficult software because while it will be a great learning experience, I want to avoid being turned-off by NAS systems due to a difficult first-time user experience. I want to begin my NAS journey by hosting some private servers for games like Minecraft, setting up a Plex server for 1-4 people, and storing some photos and videos. Being able to experiment with software like Docker and Kubernetes would be nice as well. A 4-Bay would be ideal.

Thank you for any input you have and for the free reviews and knowledge you've armed me with for jumping into the NAS world. Smile

Time to replace 10 Yr old NAS?
Posted by: Enquiries - 07-07-2024, 08:35 AM - Forum: Before you buy Q&A - Replies (1)

Current solution Synology DS713+ (2014) & DX513 (2017) (2 + 5 bay). 1 volume across 4 drives using SHR with tolerance for 2 drive failure. Lots of photographs (large RAW files), personal ripped music, Apple Time Machine backups for 2 Apple Mac computers.
Very little IT skills - I value very highly the "set and forget" / "it just works" nature.
Experience of Synology is excellent - tech support helped me resolve an issue on July 2024 via email, despite devices being 10 yrs old.
System currently working fine, although just about to replace 2 of the 4TB drives and apparently need to "rebuild" the volume, having expended it in error to 5 drives with a recent drive swap.
System has DSM 7.1 and reports up to date, so perhaps is too old to work DSM 7.2.
Any future solution would be expected to work for 10+ yrs.
My son's review of the hardware on offer from Synology makes it look out of date and over priced, although I appreciate DSM software is where the "set and forget" value is. Hlp

  NAS RAM Upgrade
Posted by: Enquiries - 07-06-2024, 08:35 PM - Forum: Before you buy Q&A - Replies (1)

Hi! First of all, Thanks for your channel and your content.

I just bought an RAM Kingston Server Premier 32GB 3200MT/s DDR4 ECC CL22 SODIMM 2Rx8 Server Memory Hynix C - KSM32SED8/32HC on Amazon.

I tried to install it on my Synology NAS 920+ but it doesn't seem to work. (The NAS doesn't boot up after 30min)
Do you know if this model is compatible?

Thank you and all the best from Austria!
Philip

  Video Convertor Software
Posted by: Enquiries - 07-06-2024, 09:35 AM - Forum: Before you buy Q&A - Replies (1)

I've used video conversion software in the free version and changed to video resolution from 480P to 1280P. In PLEX I notice better video quality and would now consider converting all my videos using this software. Have you evaluated any of these softwares? Using my NAS for PLEX is there a downside? How do they work, is it just built around something like Handbrake? I'd love to see your video on the subject. Thanks, I really appreciate your work.

What do you think? Mini PC + 4-bay HDD dock
Posted by: Enquiries - 07-05-2024, 03:35 PM - Forum: Before you buy Q&A - Replies (2)

What do you think of the following as a NAS/home server?

Biggest performance bottleneck?

Will I be able to run the harddrives in a RAID array over the USB connection?

PELADN WI-6 Pro Mini PC, Intel N100 12th gen, 8GB DDR4, 256GB M.2 PCIe SSD, 1Gb ethernet
£ 132.42 GBP https://amzn.eu/d/0iTa2m5v

to connect over USB-C 3.2 cable to

SABRENT 4 bay hard drive docking station
£ 249.99 GBP https://amzn.eu/d/05KsjoJ2

I already have Gigabit LAN with switch. Netgear D6220 modem/router for WiFi AC and internet (35Mbps down, 8Mbps up).

In order of importance, I want it for:
Backup & storage - incl. a few family members remotely
Data sync (replacing OneDrive etc.) - local & remote, only me
Photos sync & management - incl. a few family members remotely
Films - only me, to a VLC app on an Amazon Fire TV stick, Jellyfin?
Home Assistant - local & remote, to control LED lights and to add to
Tinkering - writing websites, Linux, VMs, containers

  Looking for NAS Update
Posted by: Enquiries - 07-04-2024, 05:35 PM - Forum: Before you buy Q&A - Replies (2)

Hi

I currently have a TVS-h1288X with 8 10TB HDDs installed. We run to YouTube channels and shoot with multiple cameras at 4K and have up to 6 editors working simultaneously on Premier Pro. Over the past few months we have noticed a significant challenge with performance with lots of lag and error retrieving frame errors. The consensus from Reddit and other forums seems to be that this is too much for this NAS and we should consider upgrading. I'm not opposed to that and could use this one as a backup, but I wanted your advice on a solution. My assumption is we are looking at a Rack Mounted NAS now, I want something that is high-performance and will be able to handle 6+ editors working simultaneously

Thanks in advance for your help
Luke

  Moving to a new country.
Posted by: Enquiries - 07-04-2024, 10:35 AM - Forum: Before you buy Q&A - Replies (2)

Hello, I actually already have my NAS system all built up and have been using it for almost two years now. I'm very happy with it.

For context my NAS is a Synology DS923+ with 4x14TB drives, with 38.2TB of usable space.

My question relates to moving house with my NAS. I'm a USA citizen living in Germany, and I am about to move back to the USA this fall.

Is it safe to remove my drives from the NAS while it's packed into moving boxes? Should I remove the drives? I assume that if I remove the drives, I will need to properly label them and put them back in exactly the same slots, is that correct?

Thank you very much for your time.
