  HDD Compatibility
Posted by: Enquiries - 04-24-2025, 07:35 PM - Forum: Before you buy Q&A - Replies (1)

I just purchased a Synology DS 1522+ to upgrade our storage. We currently have a Synology DS 1517+ that has been running for about 7 years.

The existing DS1517+ has five WD Red Pro 8TB drives. I purchased the same for DS1522+. I was sure these drives were listed on Synology's Compatibility List. When I started the process to set up the DS15222+, the DMS alerted me that the five drives are not on the compatibility list, but WD Red Plus drives are.

Is this something to be concerned about or is ignoring the alert and proceeding not a problem.

Thanks!

Hi, I would like to build a NAS that can house a cybersecurity homelab with OpenVPN, OPNsense/pfSense, Kali Linux. I am considering to use TrueNAS Scale since it allows scalability in the future if I want to expand my storage.

I would like some advice on what hardware I should be getting for this build.

I started with a 2 bay Synology (DS218?) NAS, but felt out of control and insecure. I tried an Pine64 RockPro64 based NAS which works, but as a software engineer, I shouldn't touch a screwdriver. Now thinking of Beelink MINI-S13 Mini PC + ORICO 2 Bay USB 3.0 to SATA 3.5 inch External Hard Drive Enclosure + Open Source software. No screwdriver, but plenty of fun setting up software. Is this a silly idea? Any better ideas?

  Upgrade from Synology 720+
Posted by: Enquiries - 04-23-2025, 07:00 AM - Forum: Before you buy Q&A - Replies (1)

Hi, thank you for providing this service! I currently run a DS720+ with 8GB RAM. Current uses are:
- Surveillance storage (using Frigate) ~1.8TB, Reolink POE cameras
- Home automation (Home Assistant) - 32GB VM with 2GB RAM
- Dabbling in arr services, but this is not a requirement (not even sure I want to be bothered with this)
- Lightweight video server (Plex or Jellyfin)
- Manual backups of critical historical files (photos, music, movies/videos, old work references)
- File sync server

What I would like:
- All of the above with the following caveats/additions
- Not opposed to doing a dedicated Reolink NVR for recording and playback and using frigate for just detection
- Snappier HA response
- Time Machine backups (2 machines, up to 1TB per machine)
- Ability to run a lightweight local LLM for use with HA, either in memory using the CPU or with a small dedicated GPU

I am open to exploring multiple machines here, perhaps a dedicated machine to run services and a d

Best Mini NAS for DNLA or Jellyfin
Posted by: Enquiries - 04-22-2025, 09:35 PM - Forum: Before you buy Q&A - Replies (3)

Old School tech (just turned 74) needs advice newer tech Mini NAS To run media server Current machine is a HP LX195 running WHS V1 or v2 Running about 2TB of storage.( Yes Dinosaurs still do roam the earth) My situation is about to change. This fall going to start start flying between home in FL and IN. So I need Media Servers in both Locations. Music is more important to me than Movies. Currently run Asset UpnP DLNA compatible audio only server. SERVIO for movies. It'd be nice if I could still use Asset till I get started with something Like Jellyfin. Don't mind assembling a kit project or turnkey if in budget.
Thanks for time

Hi i have followed your channel on YT for a while, and before that i was sold on unraid, but then i started to look att synology, but for the pricepoint AND their plans to go more enterprise i think maybe a "custom NAS is the right way to go,.

However before i just looked att unraid but now truenas looks kinda tempting too, but my deep knowledge is to low for me to deside , my goal for the NAS is of course backup files on my computer AND pictures from my phone, but also to digitize my movie collection, and maybe run a viritual machine (windows) for lighter workloads.

ia have been buildning my own computers in the past but when it comes tos NAS i don´t really know what hardware to get, i have seen your chinese MOBOs but for some reason i´m a bit sceptical for chinese boards, i do have a Intel Core i7-4790K laying around from 2015 but i guess thats to old to use?

i live in sweden and i hope you understand what i´m wrinting, best regards Björn, love your channel

  Upgrading my RS3618XS
Posted by: Enquiries - 04-21-2025, 10:35 PM - Forum: Before you buy Q&A - Replies (1)

1. I want to upgrade my RS3618XS to full memory, it has 8 gb today so I'm planning to buy the 4 x 16GB Crucial RAMEC2133DDR4-16G. These are not ECC, would that matter and do you have Kingston 16 GB equivalents?

2. I will upgrade to NIC to 2 x 1oG SFP+ cards to link aggregate to 20GB/s.

Will these give me a powerful enough PLEX server (even though it doesn't has Quicksync) so that I can stream to 4 different devices and transcode at the same time from 4k down to 1080p or 720p.

The server wont be doing surveillance or anything else, and I already have the RS3618xs so I don't want to change if I don't need to? Wouuld I need to address and SSD for caching via a NIC combo
card?

Thanks again, your channel is great!

Tony

  Security NAS system
Posted by: Enquiries - 04-21-2025, 10:00 AM - Forum: Before you buy Q&A - Replies (1)

Hello

I have been wondering about what sort of NAS would be the best chose.
I have viewed probably most of your videos but can't seem to find what im looking for.
What my need are:
* The possibility to sync photos and documents from iOS and Android.
* To stream movies to my Apple Tv (if possible)
* Local password manager sync to phone and computer (if possible)
* And now for the tricky part. A secure system with a non US, China (nor preferably not, but not a deal breaker Taiwan) manufactured or software develop . A system which will place security on the forefront.

Since this is for personal use the price will, unfortunately, always be a pramatar.

Thankful for any advice you might be able to provide.

Regards, Erik

Synology NAS Celeron J4125 or faster
Posted by: Enquiries - 04-21-2025, 01:35 AM - Forum: Before you buy Q&A - Replies (1)

Since Synology is no longer offering Celeron processors with built-in video co-processors for PLEX transcoding, which of the current processors is able match or outperform the J4125 using only software for PLEX transcoding (with sufficient system RAM)?
What can match my DS1520+ Celeron J4125 4-Core 2GHz/2.7GHz turbo? A 4-core Ryzen V1500B at 2.2GHz, or a 4-core Ryzen V1780B at 3.35GHZ/3.6GHz turbo, or a 6-core Zeon D-1531 at 2.2GHz/2.7GHz, or an 8-core Zeon D-1541 at 2.1Ghz/2.7GHz turbo?
