  selecting a simple nas and accessing it remotely
Posted by: Enquiries - 01-01-2025, 05:00 PM - Forum: Before you buy Q&A - Replies (1)

hello,

i've watche a few of your videos about the qnap ts 230 and have the following scenario;

1) i've been ripping dvds for years and have them stored on an external ssd. collectively they make up about 2 tb of data;

2) at home i have fios internet service that operates at roughly 100 gb up and down;

3) i would like to be able to remotely access my movies;

4) i do not want to dedicate a computer to the task of serving my movies;

5) my fios intenet at home utilizes a dynaic ip address system;

6) my questions are:
i . can the qnap function with a dynamic ip to provide me continuous remote access to my movies?
ii. if the dynamic ip is a problem, will using a ddns such as no-ip solve the problem/
iii. is my internet up and down speeed suffiicent to smoothly watch my movies remotely?
iv. when i remotely access my movies, does the nas system require me to access the movie and download it to my remote device or is the movie be streamed from the nas?

thanks

  Isolating part of a network
Posted by: Enquiries - 01-01-2025, 09:35 AM - Forum: Before you buy Q&A - Replies (1)

I am building an RFID reader based timing system for running races. This will be a portable system for outside.I have 2 Motorola fx7400 readers connected to a TP Link wireless router via LAN. I have set the preferred client IP addresses for each reader at 192.168.0.102 and 192.168.0.103. I did this as the readers seem to need to maintain their auto DHCP selection or they become impossible to connect to when DHCP is turned off. The problem lies in when I connect the router to the internet (both wirelessly as a range extender, (preferable as this will be how I will connect to my phone hotspot in the field)) or hardwired as a secondary router, I lose communication with my readers. I suspect the internet connection is reassigning my IP addresses but I am unsure. My question is this: How can I maintain my dedicated network of readers while gaining internet access for just my laptop? I am guessing a managed ethernet switch, or is it as simple as reassigning IP addresses? Thanks for any help!

  Changed port 8080 and can no longer connect
Posted by: Enquiries - 01-01-2025, 06:35 AM - Forum: Before you buy Q&A - Replies (1)

I was watching your videos on how to setup the Qnap ts-464 NAS system. In video 6 you were very emphatic about changing port 8080.... so I did. Now I can't connect to the server using my web browser. What do i do?

  TerraMaster ECC memory support?
Posted by: Arjestin - 12-31-2024, 03:28 PM - Forum: Before you buy Q&A - Replies (1)

Hi,

I'm looking for a 12/16 bay rackmount NAS that supports ECC memory. TerraMaster has some models that are very fairly priced, but I could find none that officially support ECC memory. Even the U8-450 model with its Atom C3558R, does not support ECC memory according to the specifications on TerraMaster website. It seems strange to me that a major NAS brand like TerraMaster does not have any models with ECC support.

1. Do any of the TerraMaster 12/16 bay rackmount NAS support ECC memory unofficially?
2. Can you recommend me a non-TerraMaster NAS that is fairly priced for its hardware? I'm going to replace the OS with TrueNAS running under Proxmox, so software doesn't really matter to me.

Thanks,
Arjestin

  Nas surveillance
Posted by: Enquiries - 12-31-2024, 04:35 AM - Forum: Before you buy Q&A - Replies (1)

I've watched your videos. I know you like complicated. We need to walk down two paths at once. I'm 67. I'm an amateur photographer with several hundred thousand raw files. They're scattered not only across different portable hard drives but also across both PC and Mac. My photography has suffered these past years because I've lost the ability to manage my files. Second path. I've owned a dry cleaning company for 50 years. While I was researching NAS I realized that surveillance was possible. I'm looking to accomplish two tasks. Backup my photos and other work plus build a surveillance Network for my 9,000 square ft production facility with 15 cameras. What would you recommend to me? I was all settled on a Synology solution but a direct inquiry with them left me cold. They were talking about an NVR piece of the puzzle that confused me. Dva 1622 really? I don't seem to understand the pathway from the camera to the Nas? KEEP UP THE GOOD WORK. THANKS. Mark

  QNAP TS653D - ethernet connection
Posted by: Enquiries - 12-31-2024, 02:35 AM - Forum: Before you buy Q&A - Replies (1)

Hi, I purchased the TS653D a number of years ago. I have a SSD memory upgrade for onboard cache but I still get stuttering during my movie playback (Plex). NAS is connected to home network via ethernet. I occasionally get a notice advising my network connection is not fast enough for the movie I am trying to watch (2160P 4K). I aware that the NAS has the ability to connect via the 2 ethernet ports. I am correct in that this increases the streaming speed? If so do I just need to run the 2 cables out of the back to increase the speed and do I need to change any onboard settings, or do I need to upgrade with a card to increase the speed.

Any advice and guidance would be greatly appreciated.

PS I love you youtube videos because your knowledge is 2nd to none. They are very professional and I have yet to see you utter the word 'Um' in any of your videos.

Regards - Mark

  QNAP ts464 Data copying error
Posted by: garethw - 12-30-2024, 07:39 PM - Forum: Technical Support - Replies (1)

I have a TS464 which I cannot copy data onto.

I have the TS464 setup with 4 WD Red 6Tb in RAID5 configuration. These drives are effectively empty.
I have a Seagate external HDD with ~4Tb which I am trying to copy onto the 464. The Seagate is mounted onto the 464 as an external device.

However I try and copy the data, the 464 either freezes mid copy or crashes and reboots. I have tried all the USB ports on the QNAP and several cables and this is a common issue. If I try and look at the files on the seagate 464 it can open and display the files without any issues; it just won't copy them. I only have about 200Mb of the 4Tb copied across

I have checked the Seagate HDD under windows and all files can be accessed fine, chkdsk finds no problems on the drive.

Now, I could simply copy the files onto the NAS over the network from Windows; but if I cannot copy from the external HDD onto the NAS then I am not confident that I will ever be able backup the NAS or restore files to it - want to resolve this before I start using it in anger.

QNAP support refuse to believe there is a problem on the 464 and state the problem must be on the Seagate, despite all the evidence to the contrary. They are refusing to RMA the device.

Anybody think what could be going wrong here - other things to check or tests to do? This is supposed to be the best in class unit and if it can't even copy files, maybe it's time to leave QNAP behind Angry .
