I am an amatuer/professional photographer, but just barely.   I have been plagued by external and internal hard drive failures and I'm in need of a solution.

I have 7 years of photographs across two different operating systems and I need a clear and concise way to keep my photographs accessible and also organized. 
I am currently using a macbook pro (2023) to do all of my editing, and I'll be staying with mac, although from what I read about the web interface that's a non-issue. 

Right now I have 6 or 7 external drives, totaling about 8-10 terabytes storage.   I want to put the data from all of those onto 1 NAS.  
I don't know what kind of backup I need.  I certainly don't want my only drive to fail (again) but I am not capable of buying multiple drives for raid configuration, at least not in one go. 

I looked into building my own NAS, which is fine I've built my own computer before, but I'm stuck on what might be the best kind of bare bones with the ability to upgrade parts of it in a few months without starting from scratch again.  

I probably ingest 500 to 1000 gigabytes a year, so I'll need to factor in some overhead for a couple years until I can upgrade or add more drives.  

What kind of raid do you suggest I use?
Do you think I should just start buying parts to make my own or buy something off the shelf?

Currently I am running a Synology DS224+ with 2x 16TB HAT3301-16 drives. My current backup process is a SeaGate Expansion 16Tb external USB hard drive connected 24x7 to the DS224+ running HyperBU on a 1x/week auto-backup.

I would like to start approaching the 3-2-1 BU philosophy by implementing a 2nd NAS (probably as JBOD) to BU selective important shared folders. This NAS would simply be a BU repository and not used day to day. I currently am the only user for my home networking system and all remote access is through TailScale.

I do plan to upgrade the DS224+ to a 4 bay (or larger?) unit sometime within the next 12 months on a staged process - new NAS chassis - migrate the two 16TB drives to it - adding drives as req'd. I might wait to do the update until then and use the DS224+.

What would be a suitable NAS for the BU role? Nothing fancy - Trying to keep costs under control. Thanks.

I’m going in circles. Finally decided on a Terramaster t6 423 for my needs. Bought it from the Terramaster.com website as there was a sale. 569,00 instead of 759,00. Thought great. Payment was a little dodgy. The visa portal was not working on the de website. Customer support directed me to global site where I could use visa. But as I was buying this as a business expense I decided to use the de site and PayPal express checkout. Payment went t6423 came couple of days later.

I asked for an invoice and this is where I start to distrust the company. I can simply not get a valid invoice with vat and vat number listed from the company for a product bought from there de website in euros.

Anyone else had this experience?

I just want to send it back now. See how that goes. But then I need help choosing a new device.

Rack format would be nice but not a must. Was planning to use 2x parity so 4 bay may be a little cramped. But if needs be, budget wise I’d go 4 bay 1x parity.

I'm a journalist with large volumes of photo and video content. This would be a small business usage case.

I'm looking for a reliable system that can hold several years of content but also connect, somehow? to older backed-up content.

I currently have a four-bay drive holder that I manually drag files onto - two of the bays are backup.

I'm not sure if I need a NAS or DAS? I don't need remote access, though it would be a nice benefit.

I'm looking for a reliable local system that has some redundancy, and can grow as the content grows.

Is there a tutorial video for setting up Remote Play for Jellyfin on a Asustor? I tried looking but didn't see anything specific to what I wanted to do.

I have an Asustor Lockerstor 4 Gen 2 (AS6704T) with Jellyfin running on it that I'd like to add Remote Play, but I'm an absolute novice when it comes to remote networking; I've heard enough to believe I need added security of HTTPS when using a DDNS setup (I'm probably not even using the terminology correctly). I've tried piecing information from different NAS brand tutorial videos and ones not involving Jellfin or HTTPS specifically but I get lost in the weeds trying to make it all work. I basically want to make my Jellyfin media accessible enough to set up on my parents' or my friend's Roku (with Jellyfin) across town, or anywhere I am when travelling.

looking to buy the Rs 1221+ it doesn't look like Synology is coming with a upgraded version in 2025 so is the 1221 still a good buy here in 2025, will there be sufficient support in the future. im going to use it for home purpose, file storage, and photo storage(amateur photografer), a few docker systems such as Home assistance, running Mac and pc with a unify setup.

Hi. My use case is simple, my requirements easy I think. I just want a rock solid N100 based nas, reliable, moderately performant (I have 2.5GB Backbone) , and am not greedy, so 1TB is sufficient. Needs to be relatively power efficient.
But, in the event something goes wrong, I need to be able to either rebuild the solution relatively easily back to operational quickly (Am ok with Linux), or just replace faulty MVNE without issue.
There are SO many boxes to choose from, SO many MVNEs to choose from, its a minefield!
What is the go-to solution that meets this criteria?
Am used to OMV, but fancy giving TrueNas Core a go.

I'm looking to build my own nas and I have picked what parts to have, I'm just wanting to work out what's best in terms or Truenas or unraid.

My main concern is the data I have on my old terramaster nas, how best is it to get the data to the new system, will I be able to just plug the hard drive in and then either truenas or unraid will see it, don't really want to lose the data, its 2 hard drive 16tb each, If you can advise the what's best to do, was going to get another 16tb hard drive as well to add to the setup as well, as that's the reason I'm upgrading as both are nearly full.

Hello. I will start by saying. I ahve in recent years started watching NAScompares and I love the content and therefore I trust to ask your advice.

I have not a NAS setup yet, but I have wanted to confugre one for home and business for a while now.

I am looking to confugre a Lockstor gen 2. 6 bay for business and home. The Home one will function as my home system and additonally as a offsite backup for the business system.

I am currently reviewing HDD's to use. And I currently viewing Seagates Exos. The primary question is if the LUN of Exos is compatible with lockstors gen2 NAS'

I previosuly looked at synology and was very impressed with them, but with the appearant reduction in software support I become unsure on synologys brand and way forward. Synology si strongest on the software side, but if they are showing signs of leaving that throne I would not feel safe to utilize synology. I have therefore landed on lockerstor. I would not mind having a consultation on my choices.

We are a business of 35 users in London and have an older QNAP NAS 451+ helping us for about 5 years but would like some help with it to get the best out of it and also just purchased another QNAP 453E to help with the load. Need some onsite and on going help please. Payment by the hour or day etc
