Expanding TRAID Pool: 24 TB Drive with Existing 18 TB Drives
|

Hi there,
I have a TerraMaster F4-423 with 3×18 TB HDDs already installed and configured as a single pool.
The system is set up using the BTRFS file system and TRAID, and I believe the pool is configured with single-drive parity, as I originally started with only two drives when I first set up the NAS.
I wasn't able to get another 18 TB drive, so I opted for a 24 TB HDD instead.
Now, I'd like to add the 24 TB drive to the existing pool (which is why I chose TRAID back then) to expand the usable storage.
Can I simply add the larger 24 TB drive to the pool, let it synchronize, and expect everything to work properly—perhaps not gaining the full 24 TB, but instead around 18 TB of usable space, as I assume?
Thanks to anyone taking the time to answer and help!
(Apologies if I'm confusing "pool" and "volume"—I'm not the most advanced NAS user.)

Optimize QuMagie iOS

Hello! New NAS setup, primarily to replace icloud for family. I am accessing QuMagie from tailscale, since I still want to view photos and videos away from home.
Videos in particular have a lag/buffering time. What would you recommend to optimize speed? Accessing on PC via LAN seems quick enough
1.Would an SSD cache help?
2. Would migrating the app to SSD help? (do I need specific size to ensure this works)
3. Open to other options, I'm not experienced with docker, but can try to learn if its specifically a QuMagie issue

Do you have an updated video, or compatibility list for the RAM for the synology 1821+ as a lot of the RAM listed here is no longer available. Thank you in advance for your help.

Drives for Zidoo UHD 8000 media player

Foolishly I bought 2 x ST16000NM002H Exos Enterprise (X24) 16TB SATA Hard Drives for this player. They work fine, but during playback there is a loud clunk every 2 or 3 seconds. Both drives are exactly the same. The noise is very audible from my seating position but still audible from the other side of the room, during quiet passages. It is very distracting when trying to watch a movie.
I can't hear any other noises from the drives. No whirring or clicking for example.
Are there drives of a good size I can replace these with that won't have these audible clunks like this.
I would really appreciate your advice.
Kind regards
Steve

Backup Google Photos using MARS

I have this service operating successfully but now wish to delete photos from Google Photos without that photo disappearing on the next MARS run.
There doesn't appear to be any option for a backup only a sync action.
Do you have any suggestions?
Thanks, Len

Hi,
I've been running on a DS413 since it got available in Hungary. Currently with 1x3TB + 3x6TB WD Red in SHR.
I'm considering Synology, QNAP or Terramaster but open for any suggestion.
Use case:
* MAIN: Photography: I create folders and put RAW images on PC which is synchronized to the /photo folder. I use Lightroom to edit photos on any PC/notebook (and Phot StatLR plugin to directly upload to PhotoStation). Lightroom settings and catalogues are synced by Cloud Station Drive.
* File server for the household accessible from PC, notebook and mobile (android)
* Cloud sync (full backup on Blackbaze, sync with MS365 Family, Google drive, Dropbox)
* File sync across devices
Home network is Wifi6, 1 Gbit WAN, 1 gbit LAN. Wired for 1Gbps (CAT5E)
Can you recommend me a good upgrade on a reasonable price for the next decade?
Thanks

SFF-8643 nvme backplate installation in a case

Hello! I hope you are doing well and the seagulls are keeping away.
Short question. You have discussed a couple of motherboard bundles that come with a SFF-8643 backplate that allows the installation of 4 additional nvme ssd drives, like the one on the link at the end of this email.
I was wondering - where would you install the nvme backplate in a nas case - e.g. on any of the Jonsbo cases, lets say in this case the Jonsbo N2 or N4.
I have a topic suggestion for a future short video - I have read in multiple place that one shouldn't use nvme ssds on a NAS because the OS can't reclaim storage space that was once in use but has had data deleted, unless the NAS OS uses zfs. Is this true? Why would anyone install SSDs on an Unraid build?
You make sure you have a great summer. Thanks!

Hello, I am upgrading from a DS220J to a DS1522+
I use my nas to watch movies and store my photos.
What would be the best way to transfer my files from the 220J
to the 1522+?
I have two new 16tb drives for the 1522 when it arrives. I have two pools on the 220J one with 10tb and one with 9tb.
Should I use the migration software or just plug in my two old drives after setting up the 1522+?
Thanks,
Randy
