First time NAS buyer, I am debating between a qnap TS-653D-4G 6 Bay +16g memory upgrade +4x 16tb HDD ($1600)
Or a QNAP TVS-872X-i3-8G-US Desktop 8-Bay NAS/iSCSI IP-SAN, Intel® Core™ i3 4-Core Processor, 8GB DDR4 RAM, 10GbE*1 (Base-T), 1GbE*2
+3x 6tb HD ($1800)

I am almost exclusively using it to digitize my movie collection (currently mostly SD and 3d blue ray) and use as a media server. There is little chance of multiple users at the same time or simultaneous read and write processes. Also, either one will have greater hardware then I currently have on my computers
4k ability/useably is very desirable as well as 60hz hdmi output (both have) and durability are strong considerations.

The 653 seems to have everything I need but will be maxed out immediately . If I got the other it would be with the idea that it would be in service 10+ years and a slow build up of hardwear.

Also, the reason for the 18tb HD is I currently have access to a deal where they are $14.50ish per TB, the 6tb ones are only slightly more expensive but my budget would have already been blown. (All are segate ironwolf)

I need my NAS to be upgradable / expandable.
My picks are:
a) Qnap TVS-872X-i3-8G
b) DELL POWEREDGE R720 8X3,5" LFF RACK 2U with: Xeon 10C E5-2670, 32GB RAM DIMM PC3 DDR3 Registered ECC, PERC H710P,Dell 2X 10Geth RJ45 - with TRUENAS.

I need an opinion / help on which one to choose.
What are the advantages and disadvantages of each solution.

I just bought a PS5 and am wanting to expand my storage space. I'd love a 4TB, BUT, can't justify spending the cost of a SSD that's the same or more than the PS5 itself. haha.

I was debating between the FireCuda530 and the WD Black SN850X, 2TB's.... And it seems like your article I read said that the FireCuda 530 was BETTER than the SN850X... Correct? (both are same price at Amazon right now)

BUT, I just saw this on Amazon, and some people are saying it's even better than the FireCuda?

ITs: "SK hynix Platinum P41 2TB PCIe NVMe Gen4 M.2 2280 Internal SSD"

Would that be the better choice over the FireCuda 530? IT's $10 more than the FireCuda.

Thoughts on what's best?

I recently came across your channel when I was researching NAS devices. I am a clinical researcher and my wife is a Neuro Scientist. We both need a lot of storage for work purposes. In addition, I hate the Apple iCloud. I constantly have to pay and increase the storage of iCloud for photos and also find myself in the position every other year having to get a upgrade in storage for iPhone. I want control over my pictures and documents. I like that fact that with NAS I would have my own person cloud and could use it like the iCloud & OneDrive. We are both at the start of our careers so the pictures in size will only increase by the year and the publications and research we do will also only increase. To give you an idea of how many photos we have on just one phone is 34gb. That is not including the multiple photo libraries we have w/Apple.

With that said, please advise on what NAS system you think would be best. It would be use for both personal and work purposes.

i am planing to buy a Synology 1522+. I am mainly a home user and will use it mainly for storage and backup purposes. I do have multimedia files, (music, photos, and movies), but i am the only user, i am neither streaming nor generaly sharing any of my files. Network speed is not an issue at the moment, so i will not get a 10GB card.
That said, when configuering the NAS for my use what is more important, RAM or M2.SSD?
I plan to buy the unit with 2x 8GB RAM and no M2.SSD.
Would that be ok or should i max out the RAM to the max (32GB)?
Or should i even consider i.e. 8 GB RAM plus 2x M2.SSD?

I'm new to NAS server. i explore the possibility to install a NAS server to my home router so i can do the below:

1) automatic back up my apple photos, videos
2) automatic back up photos and videos from other devices of my family running on android such as tablet , ipad, mobile phones Samsung etc
3) be able to live stream photos and videos from our mobile devices
4) upload drone videos. My drone stores the videos in Micro SD
5) user friendly app in mobiles
6) max capacity 2-4 TB
7) have a back up withing NAS server in case one of the drives go bad

Im not a professional and the need is more for home storage and to save drone videos that will hold more data

I'm trying to understand why NAS drives are not formatted to standard format types, like NTFS or such. I was very surprised to learn that if my drive bay goes down (the drive bay, not the drive), I would not be able to read the drives without special software (and new drive bay). This seems very counterintuitive. But perhaps NAS is not the best hardware for backup and is merely for speedy network file access? Can I format a Synology to NTFS and be able to read it easily in a PC without major limitation as a NAS drive?
