on NAS: RAM vs SSD caching - Enquiries - 09-05-2022 Dear Sir, i am planing to buy a Synology 1522+. I am mainly a home user and will use it mainly for storage and backup purposes. I do have multimedia files, (music, photos, and movies), but i am the only user, i am neither streaming nor generaly sharing any of my files. Network speed is not an issue at the moment, so i will not get a 10GB card. That said, when configuering the NAS for my use what is more important, RAM or M2.SSD? I plan to buy the unit with 2x 8GB RAM and no M2.SSD. Would that be ok or should i max out the RAM to the max (32GB)? Or should i even consider i.e. 8 GB RAM plus 2x M2.SSD? I am looking forward to your reply RE: on NAS: RAM vs SSD caching - ed - 09-07-2022 There is no need for more RAM or NVMe cache if you use your NAS for simple file storage for a single user. Caching is something that helps in office environments when there are 10 users accessing the same files. And when data needs to be uploaded on frequent bases. RAM is only useful if you actually use it. You may need more memory if you run so many apps or use it for virtual machines. Otherwise simple media streaming do not require more RAM. Introducing SSD instead of HDD is something that could give you a smoother experience. But it cost more money. I hope this helps. |
