Hi all. Have been ploughing through your excellent site and reviews. I've exceeded my Netgear Ultra 6 9TB of storage so need another device.
Device is used for backing up digital negs, videos, general office docs, PC and laptop backups (Acronis) and music via LMS/Squeezebox devices.
I'm leaning towards another 6 drive device for redundancy and probably around the 30TB for future expansion.
Any initial thoughts please?

I just bought a DS920+ Installed and everything but the upload and download speed are super duper slow, between 5-15mb/s. My Ethernet cable is not long enough to plug it in from PC to my NAS, and i watched a bunch of tutorials following the guides and setup. Do you have a full set up tutorial from start to finish plugging all the cables and configuring Synology App?

Using hard drives of varying storage capacity

Hi guys!
I hope all is well with you all! Thank you for your excellent videos and all the great information you all provide!
I had a question about using hard drives with different capacities. I currently have a DS920+, in which I have three 6TB Seagate drives using SHR which I know would allow me to use different sized hard drives. I was thinking about putting a 14TB hard drive into the one empty bay I currently have. My question is...would having such an "asymetric" set up, with three 6TB drives and one 14TB drive be ok? Would there be performance trade offs? Would I be able to get full use of the 14 terabytes in the new drive?
Thank you very much in advance for your time and advice! It's much appreciated!
Regards!

QNAP TVS-h474 vs TS-464

Hello. I'm in the market to replace a 10-year old Synology DS412+. In all honesty, it's met my needs for many years until media formats have exploded and client transcoding is hit or miss. I'm also adding 4-6 cameras which I've never had prior. I'm believe the TS-464 will meet my needs with some added upgrades. The TVS-h474 is notable but will it meet or exceed the performance of the TS-464. What could one expect of the TVS-h474 PLEX performance? I intend to have it for a good 7-10 years if possible. If the answer is "NO", what about TVS-h674-i3-16G. It's 3x the amount of the TS-464 but if it would future proof me for 10 years it's an option. PS - I was a hold-out for the DS-923+ but disappointed in the CPU without the on-board GPU. Thank you. jd

Where can I buy QNAP TS-464T4? You mention it in this article that is now 10 months old (as of 11/6/22):
https://nascompares.com/news/ts-464t4-first-thunderbolt-4-nas/
I'm unable to find it anywhere. Are there similar Synology products that allow for direct connection to a mac for better performance as if the NAS was locally connected. I also have a Synology DS918+ and Synology DS214Play but I don't think these allow any direct connection to a mac.

Currently have a nice and compact hassle-free DS411Slim running.
But since it's getting a bit older and nothing lasts forever I'm already planning replacement before it's inevitable.
After waiting for the DS923+ specs I'm still not sure if that would fit me. I think the 920+ is still a good option for me. Especially when the prices might be dropping by the end of 2022.
I have a 1Gbps home network (no upgrades planned yet) and we use the NAS primarily for serving files. We used to watch movies via DLNA/ Media Server but nowadays it's more Netflix and Disney+.
I'm a software developer myself and I like to play around with all the options DSM and the apps given me but all I really use it for is just storing vids and pics from holidays and some documents and music. The reason I'm looking for a 4-bay model is because I 'd like to start with a 2 disk SHR setup and then later be able to extend with 1 or 2 disks if we need more storage capacity.
My current DS411Slim holds 4 disks of 1TB each
1x Samsung HM100UI (there used to be 2 of them at the start but one died and since then I'm hooked on WD red)
3x WD10JFCX-68N6GN0
So effictively I have around 2,7 TB available whereas I'm just using 1,7. So storage demand is actually quite small (at the moment).
What would you recommend in my case?
Regards,
Niels

Upgrading from DS220J - technical question and suggestions?

Hello,
I am planning to move up from my DS220J - slow processor and low RAM - and am considering a DS220+ (budget is less than $500).
Current DS220J has 2 IronWolf 4Tb, plus an external 8Tb Seagate drive (USB), and I use it most to store files and videos, and 2 surveillance cameras are installed (would love more, but the license cost from Synalogy is expensive). No Plex being used.
Technical question: If a reasonable priced 4-bay comes my way, should I just add 2 new IronWolf disks (same capacity)? What if the new NAS is not Synology, should I export my data to my external drive and wipe the old NAS disks before adding them to the new NAS?
I am considering the DS220+, any other suggestions? It seems that Terramaster and QNAP are options, but the few reviews I have read are not encouraging (lot of work to set them up, heating issues, etc).
Thanks!
