Greetings Robbie,
Thank you so much for all of your knowledge and advice when it comes to NAS Compares. I really have learned a lot from listening to you and I really enjoy your channel!
I am a pianist and composer here in Nashville, TN, and I am currently running a PC, Windows 10, 64 GB RAM. I am wanting to find a way Robbie of backing up my Midi and Audio Files (Cubase 11) and for my sheet music Dorico 3.5. I currently have a Glyph Drive that is in my rack, which is right below my Steinberg MR816X Audio interface. However, I can't find any manufactures that can mount the new Glyph Drives in my rack.
I could maybe use 1TB on each of the 4 Drives. So, right now, I don't need a lot of space, but as I begin making audio files for Music Libraries for tv and film and to continue with my own solo piano compositions, I want to make sure I have a secure system in place. Not only for backup, but also for networking if need be when working with other composers.
I am new to the world of NAS, but I have seen a couple of musicians on YouTube, and I think they both were using the DS920+ from Synology. I was looking at the RS822+ which is the 4 bay. I like the price, but was not sure if this would work for what I am needing it to do? I believe you mentioned in the RS822+ video that it wouldn't be the best for multimedia? And that it only goes to 2GB Memory?
There is also the RS1221+ which can expand the memory a little more. I wasn't sure if this would be a better option or not? Might be over kill with the 8 bays. But, was trying to find a way to not only back up my midi, sheet music, and audio files, but also my system drive on my PC? I have watched a video on YouTube about swapping out the fans on this unit to make it quieter, but then the temperature getting a little warmer on these? Plus that might work against me when it comes to my warranty?
One other thing Robbie, if I went with the RS 1221+ or the RS822+ I wouldn't be able to use the rack rails. My audio interface and my TASCAM CD-RW900 MKII just screw in on my audio workstation. There is just 4 bolts holding each of those units in place. Are the clamps, or the brackets that screw into the Synology rack units plastic or are they metal? If plastic, would the plastic brackets support the unit? I wouldn't need the handles like on the RS822+ and wasn't sure if those are just extra or if there would be another option of holding the unit in place.
Granted, I know I could use a desktop system, but do like the idea that I could get a rackmount unit. Just wasn't sure though what my best course of action would be for what I am needing it for.
Thank you so much!
Cory

Hello NAS experts,
I am looking for a NAS solution forthe following requirements. Have been actively following your video comparisons on youtube and also reading articles, getting accustomed to NAS solutions such as UnRaid, TrueNAS etc. I am contemplating whether to use my existing hardware that is no longer being used for its intended purpose.
Requirements:
1. PLEX Server for Media Hosting 4K HDR and TrueHD atmos content 30TB plus collection. Possibly, transcoding support. Number of streams 1 to 3 (Max. 4) at any given time.
2. Self Hosted Photo Management Solution - Looking to move away from Google Photos and iCloud
3. Self Hosted Backup solution that can be accessed remotely for files similar to Dropbox
4. I will be installing atleast 8 Surveillance cameras across my newly built home so potentially storing and accessing footage on demand
Existing Hardware:
Intel i9900k with Corsair H150i Pro
64GB DDR4 RAM 3600MHz
Asus Maximus XI Hero Wifi Mobo
18TB WD DataCenter Drive + 4 TB WD Red NAS Drive + 4 TB WD Red NAS Drive + 4 TB WD Red Pro
Samsung 500 GB NVMe SSD 880 Pros x 2
No GPU but can buy one if this hardware can be reused for a Custom NAS
I also have an Intel 10th Gen. NUC with 64GB DDR4 RAM, Crucial 500GB NVMe SSD with a Thunderbolt 4 port.
I am happy to buy a NAS where I could use some of these components especially the RAM and Drives. I was looking at QNAP TVS 874 but it had almost the samw processsor as mine 12th gen i5 vs 9th gen i9. Also, TVS-h1288X-W1250-16G vs Synology Ds3622xs+ for future proofing if I were to go with a proprietary NAS.
Looking forward to your suggestions.
Thank you.

Hello, I hope you are doing fine. I just bought a Synology 920+ and am trying to set up a Plex server. I’ve tried following your videos, but when I try to log on, Windows keeps telling me it is an unsafe site. Windows doesn’t seem to recognize the certificate. How do I fix this?
Thanks!

| SHR - if parity drive fails what happens |

Thank you for your youtube videos and website. I have recently brought a DS920+.
I set up the NAS with SHR as it allows for mix and match drives and easy expansion.
From watching your videos i know if a drive dies its easy to replace.
But i have a few questions i have not been able to find the answer for.
If you would be so kind to answer them for me.
If a drive dies in the NAS i know i can replace it. But while that drive is removed.
Can i still access what is on the nas? eg files, videos and so on.
Now I understand that SHR uses your largest drive as protection/parity you would call it.
But what happens if that drive dies?
Can you still access your files? Or does that mean you can not access them till you replace the drive.
Does this become a 1 point of failiure for SHR if it loses parity vs Raid which has parity
written accross all drives.
Do i need to or can i work out what drive if i have mupltiple drives of the same size
as the largest. Which drive is being used for parity and have that backed up externally or
cloned in some way to give me a drive to swap in if the parity drive was to die.
Any advice you can give on this would be great
Having originally started with standard drives i had two 6gb and two 4tb. I already shucked
two 10TB drives which will go in and replace my two 4tb drives.
Thanks for your time and help.
Regards
Chris from Australia

| additional invisible storage mac mini |

Hi
What would it be your advice for my issue?
My aim is to give to the mac mini of my father some storage (for foto, video and documents) I would say 2 TB with redundancy (i think raid 1)
Ideally the solution would be as invisible as possible (like some docking station/ hub to install under the mac mini)
I saw that exist some docking were you can install as ssd inside, I thought I can add two docking stacked and configure a raid 1 inside a mac,
The solution should be really easy to manage, does not need to be blazing fast but not also sluggish, and should be able to to start and stop with the start up and shut down of the mac, my dad is 75 and not really into nerdy stuff.
My plan was kind if set it and forget it.
Hope I explained clearly enough the point
Thanks!

Looking to upgrade from home brew (TrueNAS) system. Major use case is personal cloud and sharing of files, mostly photos with a few personal videos, not streaming movies. Desire to run Plex server or equivalent for photos, videos (personal) and music, but this is a secondary goal. Other major use case is part of a disaster recovery strategy for PCs (Windows), and the NAS, itself. Any insight/recommendations would be helpful.

Hello,
could you please help me out to find the ideal NAS for home photography management and ideally also to handle games (in Full HD would be sufficient) for upcoming years.
So far my candidates are DS-1522+ that does not have integrated GPU or PCIe GPU expansion option but has DSM with better Synology Photos and better Virtualisation and Container options. The other option is TS-673A which has possibility to add external GPU card but the QTS is a bit drawback. My main concern here is that the Games (Age of Empires 4, Starcraft 2, diablo 3) running on the VM will not be in ideal playable state on TS-673A therefore it is not worth investing the money into this more expensive option.
Thank you in advance.
Mike

Currently growing my movie collection and my graphic design and photography collection of data. I also want a simple solution for my wife to back up photos from her Iphone. I would also like to start treating a nas like my office network storage where I work off it and save my files to it vs saving them to my desktop. Things I want to learn more about and think about is ssd cashing or using an ssd to improve performance for working off it. Also finally I do have 2.5gb network switch and connectivity for my desktop to hopefully benefit from that ssd performance. Any recommendations would be every helpful essential before Black Friday sales to hopefully get something for just under 500$.
Ps I think I want a 4 bay nas

Hi
You have made my day when I saw on your site ask us anything and we will help you choose a NAS.
Wow what a service exactly what I need at the moment.
My set up-:
Mac Studio M1 Max
64 GB memory
2TB storage
Caldigit TS4
I would like to replace my Drobo D5 as I am getting worried its a bit long in the tooth and have already had my N5 go down!!
I run a small photography business and wish to store all of my images on a NAS and then back up to various other places such as cloud and other external had drives. I have watched various videos of yours and have gained a bit of knowledge but still need help.
To make my editing quicker I put all of my RAW images from my Nikon Z9 on my internal hard drive and when the job is finished transfer them over to my Drobo D5. I believe that this is the quickest way as direct from the Drobo being old tech and connection would be slow. Oh I use Adobe Lightroom and Photoshop.
Am I correct in saying that with my 10 Gigabit Ethernet or my Thunderbolt 4 ports I could get a NAS connect to Mac and have it work just as fast or almost as fast as the internal hard drive. If that is the case that's what I think I would like if my budget allows. This of course would save the double transfer card to Mac then Mac to Drobo.
The files from my Nikon Z9 are fairly large at 35 MB on average so after a weekend shoot I would normally have about 4 to 5 hundred GB of images. Oh I'm a sports shooter!!
As I mentioned I also have a Caldigit TS4 for my external connections so if that isn't going to cause a bottle neck I have ports on there. I do plug my ethernet cable from the virgin modem straight to my Mac but have a 2.5 ethernet port on the Caldigit. I haven't tested if there is a speed difference but will get round to it. At the moment I have 500 down and 40 up from my provider Virgin. I don't believe I need as much as 500 down but I do need as much as possible upload as I send loads of images to my website. So yes when you advise me of the perfect NAS I also need to know where to plug it in!!!
I think I have covered all the points and also supplied you with an overall of my system and needs to save you having to ask questions and to much backwards and forwards as you time is valuable. On that note I have just donated £10 I hope that is enough as I don't want free advice only good advice that's why I came to you.
Cheers
Graham

I think I have used the wrong name!!! NAS I don't mind if its a NAS or DAS or what ever you advise.
Cheers

Hello,
I have been actively following your Synology comparison videos on Youtube-excellent.
I am very new to the NAS world and was looking for 2 primary uses:
-Backup of ALL files (Video/Photo/Documents/Email)
-Viewing home videos & photos on my Sony TV from the NAS via wired or wireless
Based on the above which way should I go?
I have read about the lack of GPU on the new DS923+, but I'm not sure if that will impact my use case.
Appreciate any guidance or recommendation youcan provide.
Regards,
Tony
