Replacement of old DS413j

Good morning guys,
As mentioned the old DS413j is runnng a long time against its limmits and need to be replaced. I use it at home mainly for back up for files, photo station (synology photo) and the storage of security footage of the IP cams.
Since i had a critical failure of my non raid video drive i dont use it any more for video/movie storage.
I have watched some comparison video's and i am doubting between:
DS920+
Pro: cheaper and on board gpu power
Con: older CPU and less upgrades posisble
DS923+
Pro; faster CPU and more future upgrades
Con: more expensive? and not as versatile due to lack of gpu power
DS1522+
Pro; same as 923+ but with more ram and one more bay
Con; same as 923+ and even more expensive
Hopefully you guys can help me in this with some insight what i might have missed.
many thanks in advance.
KR,
Lars Vermeer

Need a NAS or DAS

Need a storage for my personal videos, photos, documents. Need to have 10GBE if it is NAS. I can go with DAS but it needs to be faster than usb 3.1 gen 1. I already have 4 Seagate exos 18tb new drives. I tried DS920+ but it is simply did not do a good job with 4K videos and i hated the 1gb rj45. I have 5gbe high speed internet and tplink 10gbe switch and laptop and desktops with 10gbe ethernet ports and thunderbolt. I looked at DS16..xs+ but it is AMD which lacks the media encoding....and DS920+ missing 10GBE...
what do you suggest based on this ? my main goal - absolutely zero data loss and speed. I can just get a DAS and setup a shared folder on my home netwrok as i do not need all the NAS fancy features...but i need the ability to expand in the future higher capacity HDDs when needed and cheaper ( when it becomes cheaper in future)

Hello
First of all, I want to thank you for the content and information on your website and YouTube channel! It's really helpful to understand.
I am sending you a message because I am interested in purchasing a new NAS for my home.
I looked at Synolegy DS1522+.
The first step is to purchase two 16TB WD Red that act as RAID 1.
Once the NAS project is underway, I hope to gather all my files/drives in one place once I have a 4TB, 2TB, etc in my drawer waiting for move to a NAS.
Me and my family (6 people) are owning iPhones and have a family 2TB cloud plan (10$/m) it's too expensive in the long run, perhaps I'll extend with another 16TB and so on when it will be needed.
Regarding the iPhone integration the UX/UI (saw your video and it's look Synolegy UX/UI is better then QNAP for instance, and for me it's really important)
Smart Home will be install soon at my home and perhaps I'll you the NAS with some dockers like HA etc..
Note: I'm replacing my network equipment with Ubiquity, but I'm not a video editor (yet ), and I don't need the 10Gb now, but I would like to have the ability to upgrade in the future.
Finally, I just want hear your thoughts regarding my plan
I'm just looking for expert advice.
In addition, I just want to thank you maybe with affiliate link and hope for some November discounts/deals
Synolegy DS1522+
16TB WD Red *2
I would appreciate any suggestions/feedback you may have.
Thanks a lot

Synology SA3400 for Plex

Hi,
I am looking to pick up my first NAS, and your videos have been incredibly helpful. I specifically want a rackmount since I have a server cabinet in my home. I have the opportunity to buy a SA3400 off a friend (almost new with 4 years left on warranty), for £2500.
It's on the higher end on my budget, but I do want a minimum 8 bay rackmount. Only concern is that the CPU does not do hardware transcoding. My household will have a number of users, and I want to make sure it can handle everything if I'm spending that kind of money.
I will simultaneously use the NAS to run home assistant, and process 4 security camera feeds (720p without motion, 4k during motion).
Do you have any better recommendations? Or should I pick this one up?
Thanks,
Maxim

I currently have a DS920+ which has one volume populated with WD 6TB Red drives. I am looking to upgrade volume size by replacing hard drives. I currently have a Sale going on for Iron wolf pro 18tb hard drives for 399.99 CAD almost 1/2 price. However synology does not list the 18tb drives in their compatibility list. I wanted to reach out and confirm if any testing has been done or any confirmation of the was known if the 18tb drives work in the DS920+?
i would hate to buy two drives open it up and find out the system doesn't recognize them at all and doesn't see the drives and cannot use them.
Thank you for any help.

Storage choice -SSD Vs HDD

I really enjoyed watching your Videos.
Considering SSD drives Vs HDD and SSD caching, if required.
At the moment I have a pC with a SSD drive that is networked for file access via a 1GB Ethernet connection.
If I purchase the Synology 920+ and want a fast performance what would you recommend the best set up would be, considering that it would be used for database and word and excel file access mostly. Ideally with a RAID configuration for redundancy.
1TB -2TB max storage.
Thanks for your help

Hello,
I am looking to upgrade my RAM which as of today, have only what Synology put 4GB...
I run some test and I am clearly above 16GB. I see we could put up to 32 or even 64 so before I make the right decision I am coming to you.
Can you please give me some input as a brand and memory capacity.
I have 3 x 18TB Red pro and 1 x 18TB as hot spare.
Kind Regards,
Christian

Hi Robbie/Eddie,
Is there a review of the QNAP Hx74 series coming soon? I have been waiting until you look at it before buying.
Thanks

Is adding drives in stages possible?

Years ago I had a small (2 bay) netgear readynas duo desktop nas that had a proprietary (?) Raid on it that would allow me to add drives on the fly and it would resize the array to expand.
For instance if I had 2 250 Gig hard drives, I could later just swap in a single 500 Gig hard drive a few months later. It would all resize. In theory. It worked until it finally died.
I'm about to finally buy a QNAP TS-873AeU-4G-US. Can I put in four drives now and add more later? I really can't find this kind of information? Or do I need to wait longer till I save up the money to buy all 8 drives to start?
