Hello I am the director of an independent documentary production company. We are working on a super tight deadline for an original documentary that has an estimated of 25 TB of footage. I am rushing to purchase Synology DS1621xs+ and tried to set it up in my home. I want to have it connected to multiple computers for video editing, in sync with my colleague's Synology at home, and also is available to be accessed online for my other colleagues through the network. I really hope to get it solved as soon as possible so that we can move forward with our post-production. I am wiling to pay for consulting fees to have expert providing me guidance to install the NAS for my needs. I look forward to hearing back from you. Thank you so much.

Purchasing a QNAP |

Hello, this is the scenario, I was going to purchase the TVS-872X or XT-i5 or TVS-672X or XT-i5 but now I am going with the TVS-H674-i3 once in stock. I plan on using it for system backups, shared data and Plex (1080p and 4K). I purchased 4 ST18000NE000 drives during Amazon 2 day sale. I have a TP-Link TL-SX105 switch, PCs have 2.5G adapters. Questions: 1) I was thinking of getting 2 1TB NVMEs for Primary storage pool or for caching, how would you use them or do you think I need them? 2) QuTS hero vs QTS, not sure which one to go with, looks like hero has a lot of benefits but you can’t add drives to the RAID group without wiping current group. Your thoughts. 3) Your thought in general on my plan.
I forgot to say I may create a couple of VMs and if I use QuTS Hero how much memory would you recommend for the QNAP.

Thinking about my first NAS |

For years, I have used my DD-WRT router as a sort of NAS. I attached a 8TB USB 3.0 External Hard drive to it, and ran a nightly backup of my Plex Server data and my family's Windows documents, pictures, etc to it.
For the past few months, I have been having problems with the network Hard Drive going offline. I would get an IO error in Ubuntu on my Plex Server, and would have to reboot the router, the hard drive, and the Ubuntu PC for it to connect again. I thought the IO error was a sign the 8TB drive was going bad. I only had about 1.5TB of free space left on the 8TB external HD, so I upgraded to a 14TB external USB 3.0 drive. Unfortunately, the Network Drive is still going offline, even after the upgrade. So, I replaced my router with a newer DD-WRT router, thinking the problem was with the router. That still didn't fix it. At this point, I'm thinking perhaps it is just too much data for a router to handle.
So now I have an extra router, a 14TB external HD I plan to keep using, and an 8TB external HD that may not be defective after all. I would like to figure out some sort of networked backup solution, but don't know if I should buy a NAS or just add a couple of Hard Drives in a RAID-1 configuration to my Plex Server that is always on anyway. I have purchased another 14TB bare hard drive in preparation for whatever I do, and plan to "shuck" the 14TB drive that is in the external HD so I can use them together to create the RAID.
Would you recommend I just add the two 14TB hard drives to the Plex Server PC, and create a network share, or do you think I should invest in a standalone NAS? If I was to get a NAS, would I be OK with a cheaper option, like the ASUSTOR Drivestor 4 AS1104T, or should I get something like the Synology DS418? I don't plan to use my NAS for Plex, or much of anything beyond backups or perhaps personal cloud storage. The idea of a couple networked video cameras is intriguing, but I don't currently have any plans to implement them.
Thanks for any insight you can provide.

I have hundreds of music CDs that have be in boxes for several years. I have decided to by a Synology 2 bay, (probably a DS 220+ or a DS720+) to upload my CDs so I can listen to them again. I will also use it to backup my computers and other devices in my home.
I will use Plex for the music. My question is, is it possible to upload the disks directly to Plex or do I need to upload them to Itunes on my computer and import them to plex?

I am looking for a NAS with the following functions/features/integrations:
1. Plex Media Server
2. Backblaze cloud backup
3. Unifi Console
4. PiHole
5. pfSense
6. Local Time Machine Backups
I would love you all thoughts and input to help my decision. My desire is to spend as little as possible, however, I don’t want go the cheap route and hurt myself in the long run.
Details for each of my desires listed above:
1. Currently, we do most of our media watching via streaming services, but I do have Plex Pass and may want to get some of my digital media shared there. For my old plex laptop, I had 3-4 750GB external drives connected for storage if that gives an idea of my current media library. I have HD videos accessible for online services.
2. My desire is to have a local NAS for data backup, but also use a service like Backblaze for offsite backup as well
3. I currently run Unifi Dream Router within my home, and it is pretty maxed on what it can do. It would be nice to optionally run a Unifi Controller on my NAS to possible manage my cameras and leave my networking components on the Unifi Controller within the Unifi Dream Router
4. I currently have one or 1st or 2nd gen Raspberry Pis running PiHole, which is not bad, but would like to migrate to something with faster connections, and push the existing PiHole to maybe a secondary name server in the event the one running on the NAS is unavailable.
5. Not sure if I am running into the network segmentation issues, but would love if the NAS could run pfSense, and set at my perimeter. Stating the idea out loud of having my NAS running a perimeter device while hosting internal systems and services sounds like an awful idea. So maybe I will figure someone else out there.
6. Most of my environment is Apple, so I would love the ability of automated remote backups to Time Machine on the NAS. Currently, I have 3-4 MacBooks with no more than 512G drives each.
I second-guessed myself too long recently and missed NewEgg’s deal on the 1520+ for <$600. I purchased the 1522+ on NewEgg for $550, but I am concerned with the processor change for Plex or other services.
I also purchased two 14TB WD Red Pros during the recent sale for $229 each.
Should I take a gamble and return the 1522+ in hopes a 1520+ will be on sale for Black Friday?

Surveillance Station - appropriate disk for NAS |

Hi - Looking to buy Synology DS920+ (or poss DS1522+) for std home use - media management (photos, videos), central music repository, central file store for personal devices (approx 10 - iphones, laptops etc). Considering also using NAS for home security - perhaps just 2 cameras.
As far as NAS configuration is concerned, looking at 3 x IronWolf @ 10/12TB each in SHR /btrfs format in single storage pool; perhaps 3 volumes (one for each of media, music, 'files). Current data needs are approx 8TB, so useable 20/24TB seems OK for foreseeable future. For surveillance - and what I'd appreciate advice on - should I get a single (say 10TB) Skyhawk drive for the 4th bay, setup as a separate storage pool configured as ext4. That way, I minimise write activity on my regular drives (reliability), and effectively wall off surveillance activity from other 'stuff' going on on the NAS. is this a reasonable configuration setup? Other recommendation? Would rather get it right before buying the unit! thanks

I want to migrate my old 4 bay (DS916+) disks to a new enclosure (DS1821+) and keep them as a separate storage pool and then add additional disks in separate storage pool to expand overall capacity. Will 1821 recognize the SHR four disks from the 916 instantly? (they are 4/8TB). I will then add 4x16tb to the remaining bays.

Hi,
I really like the look of the QNAP TS-464 due to the hardware specs but obviously extremely conscious of the repeated security issues that QNAP in particular seem to run into. Allowing for the fact all systems will have a baseline risk, with QNAP is it a case of they're flat out more at risk or only if you open them to remote access and specifically if you do it without changing default admin passwords?!
What I'm mostly after is local storage to compliment my OneDrive cloud photo backups, local Plex server (mostly only up to 1080p) and obviously as general storage (damn you MacBooks and un-upgradable SSD!!). Obviously appreciate anything you say will only be advice and ultimately the risk is my decision.
Love the YouTube channel by the way! Super helpful for a not fully techy who does a bit of dabbling like myself!
THanks
Lee

Building a 10GbE NAS for Video Editing |

Hi, I've been watching your videos the last couple of days to learn about NAS systems and checked out your website and thought I just give it a try.
FOLLOWING SCENARIO
Goal & the setup will be:
1 PC for gaming only
1 PC for streaming & recording only
1 PC for cutting, rendering and uploading videos only (plan: a cutter can access this PC even online via AnyDesk and create and upload videos while the streaming PC still can be used to stream and record new footage at the same time)
Th recording PC only has only a single 2.5GbE port, but we want to buy an Intel X550-T2 PCIe (or should we get something different?) card for this PC so it has 10GbE. The gaming & editing PC both already have an extra 10GbE port on the IO panel at the back of their motherboard.
The recorded footage going to be up to 6-10 hour long (a full Twitch livestream) and around 1 TB huge 1440p or 4K video files (H.264 codec) and recorded with OBS Studio.
We don't want to stockpile footage forever so 10-20 TB would more than enough for the NAS. The raw footage will be deleted after the finished video has been uploaded to the YouTube channel. So speed when accessing/transferring the files is the most important part and especially a smooth playback for video editing. So just as an example on how we think: If 10 TB can be faster than 20 TB we would rather take 10 TB storage. But 10 TB is the minimum on storage space.
Internet Bandwith:
1000 GBit/s Download
400 Mbit/s Upload
Ping: 1ms
To summarize this up:
We want to record with OBS Studio up to 1TB huge and 10 hours long 1440p/4K (H.264) with one PC directly to the NAS server and access this footage as fast possible (1025MB/s with 10GbE?) from a second editing and rendering workstation. 10 TB of storage space is enough. 20 TB would be nice, but not necessary if 10 TB are faster or so. The budget is basically unlimited, but we don't want to spend more on what we need.
Thanks for any advice. I really appreciate it.
Best wishes
