Which NAS & what size drives do I need? |

My question is what is the best strategy for buying hard drives for a NAS? I need to back up about 14 GB today but once Time Machine backups begin expanding, I believe I'll need more space. Would it make sense to purchase a 4-bay NAS and 2x16TB drives, adding a 3rd HD when I need additional storage? Or, fill up all bays with 4x8TB drives?

Upgrading RAM on Synology DS920+ |

Hello! Big fan here; been following your YouTube channel for a couple of years since I bought my Synology 920+ when it came out, and watch a lot of the videos you post there.
I am currently using the 920+ for both home and business, and I would like to migrate the Virtual Machine, where I run my company's ERP server, onto the NAS. I tried importing the ova and running it in the Synology Virtual Machine Manager, but it consumed all memory available (4GB) and essentially froze the box.
Understanding that my available options to upgrade the hardware are essentially RAM and NVME Cache, I have a couple of questions:
1. Regarding the RAM, I have decided to go with a 16GB SODIMM. Should I go with Dual Rank or Single Rank memory? What is better for my use case? From what I read online, single rank produces less heat and may improve performance marginally. But I don't know if for my use case it just doesn't matter?
2. Will I see a marked performance improvement if I add NVME cache? Only when reading/writing a lot of small files?
What is your opinion?
Thank you!

1522+,923+ or 920+ for my needs? |

Dear Nascompares Team,
I really like your work and i'm happy you are kepping us up to date!
Watching your videos about the DS 1522+, 923+ and 920+ made a lot clearer for me, but im still confused about some things for my scenario....
I'm planing on upgrading my Syno NAS from a 416 to a 1522+ or 923+.
Each would run on a RAID 5 with 4x10GB WD.
In case of the 1522+ i would use the 5th bay for a SSD to host the VM /Dokker images (shpuld increase the VM speed i guess).
I would like to use SMB Fileserver and one VM plus some (2-3) Docker container.
As a Media Server is will be used also, but i'm only hosting via NFS and watch over Kodi an Fire TV Sticks. So i think there is no need for an imbedded Graficprocessor, right?
But how does a VM behave with an Rysen 1600 without grafics? Any experience with that? I'm planning to use a Win10 or 11 VM and there will be some cases i have to play webvideos via browser or vlc.
is this possible or do i have to get a 920+ with an Intel CPU instead?
I read the AMD consumes much more power (1522+) than the Intel CPU (920+). Can you confirm this or is it not that much in iddle mode. Where as i'm not shure, if the Dokker and VM runs continiusly, if there can be an iddle mode for the NAS?
So much questions... I hope i don't overflote your freetime ;-)
Thanks in advance! I'm looking forward to your answers.
Cheers Marcel

QNAP or Synology to replace Drobo? |

I'm a Mac user with two Drobos - a 5N2 and a 5N. I don't really need the 5N but held onto it for fun when I got the 5N2. I'd get only one NAS as a replacement for the two Drobos, and find a way to reuse the disks (WD Red).
The Drobos have performed well enough but now Drobo seems to be in trouble I'm thinking off a move to another platform. I don't think I have the technical ability to maintain a TrueNAS or Unraid server - more to the point I don't think I'd be able to put it right if it failed, so I'll go for a proprietary version.
My main uses are file storage and backup, storing family photographs in something called Koken (discontinued but a pretty good PHP-based solution), media storage, Time Machine backups, Plex (where the Drobos struggle and won't transcode) and playing with/learning mySQL/Apache/PHP as a hobby.
I'm tempted by the Synology DS1522+, which offers 5 bays as for the Drobos, but there are several competing vendors out there including QNAP, Terra Master, Asustor etc.
Thanks

NAS for remote construction projects |

My company want to invest a NAS that put at main office.
We have projects that distributed around the country, and we want all information to be updated to the NAS.
Maximum users: ~100 users
The NAS would be mostly used for communicating office files, pictures, drawings (.docx, .xlsx, .dwg...)
We don't use the NAS as Media Center or Streaming Services.
A store near my place has Synology DS418 / QNAP TR-004. But it's still confusing me a lot.
Please consult me a solution.
Thank you.
