  Ryzen CPUs, transcoding, etc
Posted by: Enquiries - 10-17-2022, 07:30 AM - Forum: Before you buy Q&A - Replies (1)

Hello,

I've been watching and reading a lot of the contemt you guys have put out. Thank you very much for your work!

I'm close to purchasing my first NAS and I'm in the same situation as many other people: wondering if I should buy a Synology DS920+ or wait for the DS923+.

I've watched the videos and read the articles you've published about this and I have some questions.

If the DS923 indeed comes out with the Ryzen CPUs which don't have hardware transcoding. what is that going to prevent me from doing, compared to the DS920+?

Is transcoding only relevant if I want to watch media outside of the house (where I have the NAS)?
Can't the transcoding be done purely by software? Doesn't the Plex server do this, for example?

I look forward to hearing from you.

Best,
Luis

NAS Advice On Which One Is Good For Me To Use At Home
Posted by: Enquiries - 10-16-2022, 07:30 PM - Forum: Before you buy Q&A - Replies (1)

I have 4 x 16TB NAS Drives and need a NAS that I can use at home and put these NAS Drives into them.

I require it to store files and media files, possibly to use for Plex built-in to the NAS, and I require a backup locally onto another NAS. So I guess I need 1 NAS that supports backing up to another NAS, possibly the same brand so that it can have built-in NAS Backup technology to back up data from one NAS to the other at midnight everyday over my network.

  Synology NAS setup
Posted by: Enquiries - 10-16-2022, 01:00 PM - Forum: Before you buy Q&A - Replies (1)

Hi,

Just got a DS920+ and been following your guide on setting it up (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=pRRcGoXhLLQ).

I don't see in the video how to setup the internet access to the box. Your videos talk about a later video that will explain that, but I haven't been able to locate it. Could you send me a link for this please?

Great site and videos, been really helpful.

SSD cashing for large quantity of small files database type.
Posted by: Enquiries - 10-16-2022, 11:30 AM - Forum: Before you buy Q&A - Replies (1)

Hi.

I just read your article about SSD cashing.
We are now waiting for DS923+ release and we consider adding ssd cashing for our company.

We have several employees that are often searching for certain file in our database.
Database we need to access fast, is a database that contains tens of thousands small files such as small - few hundreds of kilobytes size - 3D models, pdf files, drawings (CAD environment), small excel files and such.

So I wonder if adding M2 NVMe cashing will make all those little files fly to the cash of NAS and alow us to search for them much quicker. We use 1GBe network, but as mentioned before the files are rather small, and we waste most of the time searching for them, not openning or saving them.

My question is: will SSD cashing in this case help?
We currently use SSD sata Synology NAS with no cashing.

Best regards
Maciej Czeszewski

How to run Win98 vm on synology nas
Posted by: Enquiries - 10-16-2022, 11:00 AM - Forum: Before you buy Q&A - Replies (1)

Hello,
I'm looking to run win98 SE on vm manager, because I have an old PC that I'm afraid might die out soon
Is there any step by step guide I can use to help me install it on my synology
Furthermore, my above mentioned old win 98 PC has a COM port that holds a license dongle which allows me to run a very much needed old software on it
So my point is that I need not only for the win98 vm to run on my synology but also be able to connect the license dongle through a COM to USB adapter to the synology in order to be able to use the old software on the win98 vm.
Note: I am in no way a computer expert so please keep things very simple if possible
Hoping you can help,
Thanks in advance,
Marwan

8 bay DAS/NAS solution for a Plex server
Posted by: Enquiries - 10-16-2022, 06:30 AM - Forum: Before you buy Q&A - Replies (1)

I currently have a Plex server used for family, with lots of media files, currently sitting around 15TB but expanding very fast. I have brothers and kids connecting to it on a regular basis, most of the time 4 people connect to it at the same time (occasionally, up to 6). The server is currently setup directly on my desktop computer, with several basic external hard drives connected via USB.

My desktop computer is Windows 10, 4 years old gaming PC, so CPU/GPU wise, it is reasonably powerful even for today. Unfortunately, the computer does not have a Thunderbolt 3 port, only USB & USB-C 3.1, which is giving me lots of problems finding a good DAS solution. I would prefer a DAS solution over a NAS, but I am open to NAS as well if it meets all my requirements. I have a few things installed on my computer that support the server, which I am not sure if it would be possible on a NAS.

I need a good 8-bay solution, DAS/NAS, for all of this. I already bought a few Seagate Ironwolf Pros.
