  Hard Drive/ Size to Purchase
Posted by: Enquiries - 12-15-2022, 01:30 AM - Forum: Before you buy Q&A - Replies (1)

I recently purchased a Synology NAS 920+ on blackfriday. I currently have about 5tb of movie files in different file types. on a computer I was using Plex I want to move my data to a NAS. After following your youtube videos I noticed if using 2 hard drives in raid 1 I'll lose half of the space for redundancy. It appears I should be purchasing a larger drive for growth is this agreeable based on the information I've supplied? If I'm understanding correctly I probably should buy 2 16tb or 18tb drives for growth? I will probably only buy one drive to start I didn't realize it. would be so costly

Question Hardware around the NAS? Plz help!
Posted by: phil - 12-14-2022, 11:36 PM - Forum: Before you buy Q&A - Replies (1)

Hey guys,

thank you so so much for all your videos. They were so incredible helpful. After watching so many of them I decided to buy the Synology 1621+ and set it up today. So proud to finally have one sitting next to me and it was pretty easy to install. I use the NAS mainly for foto storage and would like to edit the photos on the NAS with lightroom from my macbook.

Therefore my biggest question: What kind of hardware do I need for making fast access, read/write, editing fotos in lightroom which are stored on the NAS.

My hardware right now:

  • Synology 1621+
  • Synology E10G18-T1
  • 2x 20 TB Ironwolf Pro
  • MacBook Pro 2019 (2,6 Ghz 6-Core Intel Core i7, 16GB DDR4)
  • Sharkoon Combo (Docking station connected to the Macbook Pro by USB-C, having an ethernet connection of 1 Gbit/s but in the description of the website it says max rate of 5 Gbit/s) / wanted to post an URL to the specs but the forum doesnt allow me
  • Router: TP-Link Archer MR600

If I understand I have now a NAS which is able to have a 10Gbits/s connection but my router and my docking station are limited to 1Gbit/s. So I need to buy a new router + docking station which support higher rates like 5-10Gbits?
If so could you recommend some?

Sorry I m a complete beginner and would appreciate easy answers if there are any  Big Grin

Thank you so much..

I just found out that there are adapters for thunderbolt 3 to ethernet 10Gbit/s is that true? Could I connect my Synology straight to my MacbookPro without having to go through the router? That would be a dream.

  NAS Help
Posted by: Enquiries - 12-14-2022, 11:30 PM - Forum: Before you buy Q&A - Replies (1)

Hi, thanks for your informative site and videos. My Drobo that was only for Time Machine backups died. Now that I see how much a NAS can do, over time I may add:

1. Plex or similar, mostly music, probably not much transcoding
2. A couple of security cameras
3. A couple of VMs for running legacy software currently on an old Mac and VMware Windows 10.

The Drobo had 5 x 3 TB WD Red SMR drives. While not recommended, they work so it would be nice to reuse them and add more or larger drives later. If better to replace please say so. ZFS is perhaps not right though. I am leaning towards Qnap’s openness but would consider Synology. RAID 6 would be nice.

Like everyone, I want everything but not to spend way more than I will ever need. Can you decipher my blather enough to offer suggestions? Amazon US has the QNAP TS-932PX-4G for $650 USD but perhaps that is too old.

Thank you!

  iCloud to Synology NAS
Posted by: Enquiries - 12-14-2022, 09:00 PM - Forum: Before you buy Q&A - Replies (1)

Hi There.

I recently purchased a Synology NAS DS220+ as I want to move away from Apple iCloud for my photos and videos across all my family mobile devices. I have watched some of your you tube videos about Synology Photos as the application to use in this instance.

I'm looking for some advice (although I appreciate it's not technically about the NAS itself), I'm having difficulties on deciding the best approach to migrate away from iCloud. Apple present some challenges when trying to copy all my photos/video from the iCloud web portal - it limits the number of photos that can be downloaded at any one time and I'm also finding that meta data is being lost which is really annoying! Would like to know if you have come across this problem and if you have any hints and tips?

Many Thanks!!

  Impending Drobo Compatibility Problem
Posted by: Enquiries - 12-14-2022, 08:30 PM - Forum: Before you buy Q&A - Replies (1)

It's come to my attention that my Drobo 5D will likely not be compatible with updating my MacOs operating system to Ventura, which is necessary for other programs. What is my best option here? If I have to replacing my current system what would be most cost effective?

Thanks!

  923+ Build
Posted by: Enquiries - 12-14-2022, 07:30 PM - Forum: Before you buy Q&A - Replies (1)

Hello, I am building out a new NAS that will have 3 main functions.

1. Ultra fast storage for Video and photo storage viewing and editing: using 2TB Usable NVME Mirrored RAID 1 Crucial NVME P3 (Storage Pool - Not cache)
2. Synology System OS and apps: 2 x 1Tb Crucial SSD MX500's in Raid 1 SHR config
3. Surveillance Station storage: 2 x 4TB Crucial SSD MX500's in RAID 0 Config 8TB usable storage with zero redundancy for the videos themselves.

I know many will say all SSD is overkill, but I CARE about latency and response time more than throughput... I want my searches to be as fast as possible.

Also plan to max memory to 32GB (crucial) and add the 10Gb interface module.

I welcome any feedback/warnings and recommendations.

Hi gang (Robbie/Eddie),

Is the reviews for the QNAP x74 series coming soon? I think it was out before the DS923 which you have covered extensively (all good reviews).

Still waiting for your thoughts on the QNAP series.

Thanks

Looking for NAS for video editing
Posted by: Enquiries - 12-14-2022, 02:00 PM - Forum: Before you buy Q&A - Replies (1)

Hi, thanks for the help.
We currently have a Synology DS918+ with 16 TB which we use with 5 Macs hooked up via a 1GB ethernet network. The speeds are just not cutting it for us, especially now that some of our newer machines have 10gb ethernet built in so we would like to switch over to a 10gb network.
Would really appreciate advice on which direction to go with a new NAS as well as use of SSDs. We use Final Cut Pro as well as Adobe Premiere and After Effects and the speeds are around 100Mb read and write, which we would like to significantly improve (Considering our new Mac studios can run at around X50 of that on their internal ssd)

Thanks so much for the help!

  QNAP TS464 Space Issue
Posted by: Enquiries - 12-14-2022, 11:00 AM - Forum: Before you buy Q&A - Replies (1)

Hello, I would be grateful if you could help me, I am new to NAS's and have what is likely to be a very straight forward issue. My QNAP TS464 is warning me that Storage Pool 1 has reached its threshold, which I think is 13TB. There is barely any data on the drives (2 x 14TB and 2 x 1TB NVME, RAID 1) so not sure what its referring to. Think its a simple configuration issue but Im not too techie and cant see how to resolve. Also top light on NAS has red solid light light. Hope you can help, and much appreciated.
