  918+ - RAM Upgrade FAIL
Posted by: Enquiries - 12-16-2022, 03:00 AM - Forum: Before you buy Q&A - Replies (3)

Hello,

Well seems I am unlucky ... DS918+ DSM 7.1
Timetec 16GB KIT(2x8GB) DDR3L / DDR3 1866MHz PC3L-14900 / PC3-14900 Non-ECC Unbuffered 1.35V/ 1.5V CL13 2Rx8 Dual Rank 204 Pin SODIMM Laptop Notebook PC Computer Memory RAM Module

Part # 78AP18NUSL2R8-8G

Had to buy from Amazon US (I'm in AUS) have tried 2x8 Gb and both Timetec 8 Gb modules individually. No boots. Tried with Synology RAM mixed and no boots. Return to Synology 4 GB and boots within a minute or two. Reseated a couple of times to check.

Waited extended periods to see if it would boot (over 20 minutes)

No other device to try the RAM in so will have to RMA.

Disappointed to say the least as I waited almost a month for the RAM to arrive.

Any ideas why?

Storage volume - replacing drives - size limit
Posted by: Enquiries - 12-16-2022, 12:30 AM - Forum: Before you buy Q&A - Replies (1)

I have a DS1817+ with 8x 10tb drives in raid 6 setup. Getting low on space and want to replace drives with bigger option. I know I need to replace all 8 to get any improvement, but curious if I use 18tb does the 108tb limit apply to the 'raw' (8x18) or after raid applied (6x18)? I can't find any good answers anywhere

  Drobo Replacement
Posted by: Enquiries - 12-15-2022, 07:00 PM - Forum: Before you buy Q&A - Replies (1)

My Drobo 5n is beginning to show signs of failure (bay 1 consistently fails) and I was thinking to update to either a Synology or QNAP NAS. Currently, my Drobo has four 4 TB drive and one 8 TB drive. I like that if I want to upgrade a drive, I can just pull out the smallest and slap a new, bigger, one in.

NAS direct connection to MacBook Pro
Posted by: Enquiries - 12-15-2022, 04:30 PM - Forum: Before you buy Q&A - Replies (1)

hi there,
I’ve been viewing you vid hoping you’ve covered an issue that I’m having but as of yet can’t find a solution. I recently bought the Drivestore 4 Pro (AS3304T) and the USB link (AS-U2.5G2). My plan is to plug it directly into the MacBook and use it only as a backup/storage solution. Not wanting to connect it to my router if possible. Asustor told me to change the IP of the usb which I did but it sees the device but everything Is greyed out. The Asustor control centre app just shows the device with nothing else clickable. Can’t get any further.
Have you guys done a vid covering a direct connect on the Mac platform? This is driving me nuts.

If you have can you provide link.

It’d be greatly appreciated.

WD Ultrastar HC560 - clicking noise when it is turn off and turned upside down
Posted by: Gabe63454 - 12-15-2022, 03:48 PM - Forum: Technical Support - Replies (2)

Hi everyone,

Hope it is ok to ask here. Few weeks ago I bought a WD Ultrastar HC560 20TB HDD and I have 1 odd thing with it. I already asked the shop I bought this from but they don't have any in stock so they cannot check (asked on Reddit too but noone answered). I saw that you guys reviewed this HDD, if it is not much to ask, could you check 1 small thing for me? When the HDD is turned off (and all cables are disconnected for that matter) if I hold the HDD in my hand and slowly turn it upside down I can hear a "clicking" noise coming from inside the HDD. It is like if a spring is sliding on a rod there or similar, hard to tell. Otherwise the HDD is working fine, no issues observed yet. Obviously I don't expect this (nor had anything like this before) from a HDD so would like to know if this is normal or not. I could write a mail to WD but I am sure they would just say send it back even if it is "normal". Would you help me with this if you guys still have these HDDs?

Thanks in advance, Gabe

  newb to storage
Posted by: Enquiries - 12-15-2022, 03:00 PM - Forum: Before you buy Q&A - Replies (1)

I would like a 2-drive personal use nas, potentially a qnap for home use back up of 4TB. Plus use for testing 1-2 VM builds; running plex server; and media storage. So far I've checked out synology but not found a comparable to qnap ts-262. Also only found one price for the ts-262 on amazon UK. Looking forward to hearing from you. Cheers and Happy Christmas Smile

can't access media folder on file explorer
Posted by: Enquiries - 12-15-2022, 01:00 PM - Forum: Before you buy Q&A - Replies (2)

i hope you can help me; i can't access my QNAP media folder
from file explorer; on the Qlog it says "deny smb1 host security limitation" but in the settings it
has SMB3 (highest) and SMB2.1 (lowest); QNAP support said it could be my virus protection (AVG) blocking it
or some setting in QNAP; can you help me figure out the root cause and solution? i am one of the users
affected by DEADBOLT; thanks in advance

What NAS to buy? Budget 800€
Posted by: testlab01 - 12-15-2022, 09:29 AM - Forum: Before you buy Q&A - Replies (1)

Hello all,

I will post my question here.
Hello niece and nephews, its testlab01 with a new question and advise needed.

I want to buy as in the TS says an NAS. A 4-bay nas will be enough to have it in RAID-5 for fail over (and later on to expand with an extra NAS 2-bay maybe for offline backup somewhere else).

The reason for this is because we are running out of cloud storage on my device as my families devices. Google several accounts etc, and when i want to expand the cloud storage i need to pay a lot for something what is not mines. And if i dont pay anymore i still need to store all the files to something local. So in this case an NAS would be the best solution.

So i know only two brands Synology the number(1) famous NAS brand, and QNAP what is more for professionals i think. My preference self goes to Synology because the software DSM.

But i am still not really convinced which one to buy. In my shopping cart (eBay) i have added DS920+ and 4x 2tb IronWolf ST4000VN006 in total i will have 12TB of storage with fail over of 1 disk of 4tb.

In the meantime 923+ came out in November 2022 and is a upgrade compared to the ds920+Pro"s- 2.5gbps Ethernet port.- upgrade to 16gb ram, not official only upgrade to 8gb with an extra so-dimm 4GB.- new CPU AMD this time (but no GPU processing power, so PLEX will not be the great solution, but having an NAS would be giving me more motivation to watch PLEX)- And now you have NVME storage pools available on the DS923+ but i will not use that.

I am not a big watcher because of work (not that much time) but it would be always good when i have time to watch something without problems, like Blu-rays etc.

My budget is about 800€ less is always better, i have a voucher of 300€ discount on eBay so from 966€ will be like 699€ what a good price is for NAS + storage 16GB.
still to take the 923+ that one is more expensive as well. But getting longer updates as well, or to stay with the 920+ + or even a QNAP to take?

building a NAS etc, will not be the choice because it will never give you all the bells an whistles what you get with an NAS.

Also what i forget to ask is regarding CCTV,

I will install 4 cameras around my home.

  DAS RAID 1
Posted by: Enquiries - 12-15-2022, 09:00 AM - Forum: Before you buy Q&A - Replies (1)

Hello Support Team
Hope all well and thanks for the great videos.
Could you recommend a DAS RAID 1 brand that is of good quality, reliable and good reputation, as finding it difficult to find.
I really love Synology brand but doesn’t look like they sell DAS.
Many thanks for you help and time, it is appreciated.
Kind regards,
Horst

Question Migrating from SHR to SHR-2 in a DS920+
Posted by: angelsurfer - 12-15-2022, 03:17 AM - Forum: Before you buy Q&A - Replies (2)

Hi All,

I was wondering if it is possible to do an in-place migration from SHR to SHR-2 in a DS920+?

I was advised by a friend that I should move towards RAID6 as it can provide better redundancy especially during rebuilds.

I currently have a DS920+ with some old HDDs running in SHR.
I was hoping that as I start to replace the HDDs due to failures or online offers, I am able to migrate from SHR to SHR-2 in place without additional hardware.

Thanks for the help in advance.
