Photography - Processing RAW NEF files
Posted by: Enquiries - 01-19-2023, 08:30 AM - Forum: Before you buy Q&A - Replies (1)

I produce about 1 TB per year in NEF files (raw photos off Nikon camera) around 38 MB per file, that need to be processed in software on an iMac. With the internal HDD filling up quickly, I want to move the main saving location to an external HDD. I have a Verbatim (Model #47512) "shoe" that can house a SATA HDD, connected to the iMac over USB cable. What HDD would you recommend? Speed of writing to the drive is not a major need: Far more importantly, I need to be able to process these photos in software (I use Capture One) while they are sitting on that HDD connected over USB, and get no "drag" as much as possible. Thanks a lot!

  NAS for home media storage
Posted by: Enquiries - 01-19-2023, 02:30 AM - Forum: Before you buy Q&A - Replies (1)

Dear friend,

I am trying to build a NAS environment suitable for home use, but I am still hesitant about the choice of brand and model. My requirements for NAS are as follows:

1. Total budget HK$7000
2. The space is large enough to back up photos, videos, computer systems, and files (maybe ~12T)
3. Information backup is safe enough to support RAID0, 1, 5, 6
4. The transfer speed is fast enough, large files can expect a 100M speed
5. Supports increased transfer speed, expandable SSD, and a preloaded files algorithm
6. Easy to use, support WIFI network access and synchronization
7. Low cost of use, no need for public network IP to realize NAS function
8. Support a wide range of systems, support Mac OS, Windows10+, ios, android

Looking forward to your help

  file server, docker, cloud backup
Posted by: Enquiries - 01-18-2023, 08:00 PM - Forum: Before you buy Q&A - Replies (1)

Mac & Linux user with a 2012 Mac mini as my file server. I looking to replace this 10 year old CPU due to only be able to run an old OS. Before I buy a new Mac mini I am looking at a NAS, What I would like in a NAS (if possible) is the ability to run a few docker apps, file server. Backup to Blackblaze. What I like about my Mac setup is that I do not have one point of failure. If the CPU fails I can hook up to another man. So the big feature I was in a NAS is to be able to pull a drive and put it in a Linux box to read the data. I do realize that I may have to use each drive as a volume. Thanks for you help and the great YouTube content

i cant decide in between system
Posted by: Enquiries - 01-18-2023, 07:30 PM - Forum: Before you buy Q&A - Replies (1)

Hello guys on nas compares:

I have decided on a nas 4 bays system, im looking for 2.5 gbe connection but i cant decide on witch system to go with. CAN YOU RECOMMEND A SYSTEM ? ; this tree are the one that im more interested on.
1. Asustor AS5304T 4 Bay NAS
2. Asustor Lockerstor 4 Gen2 AS6704T - 4 Bay NAS
3. Qnap TS-464-4G-US

Having the ability to upgade the memory is a good feature, like the asustor.

I have two computers and i want to centralize my data between to PC and have some level of backup.
Im going with seagate iron wolf or western digital red pro drives 16tb or 18tb depending on price.

More Questions
Also does nas systems can be connected directly to the pc? Via lan cable or usb ?
Do you know a way to copy file to the nas keeping the day that it was created ?

Later on im planing on buying Asustor 5 Port 2.5G (ASW205T) and Asustor | AS-U2.5G2.

Well thanks for your time, have a nice day

  Non-NAS Drives in Synology
Posted by: mikec - 01-18-2023, 12:38 PM - Forum: NAS upgrades - Replies (1)

Hi All,

I searched around a bit, and even saw a similar question on the forum, but I'm going to be more specific with my question.
(here's a like to the closest match: https://ask.nascompares.com/showthread.p...ue#pid9353)

NAS = ds1621+
3/6 bays filled with WD Red Plus 10TB (RAID 1 with 1 hot spare)
Upgrade budget: $0.00

I'm still a NAS noob and have only had my NAS for a few weeks.  But I've spent lots of hours researching, watching boatloads of nascompares videos, etc.  I know I shouldn't use non-nas drives in the NAS.

BUT, same as question above, I have lots of drives laying around not getting used, most are mixed, but I do have a pair of 2TB WD Blue 2.5" SATA SSDs.  I spun up my first VM, Ubuntu desktop 22.04, and went with the lite install option.  It's excruciatingly slow with 1GB RAM and assigned 4 cores.  I'm also a VM noob, aside from having used them before, I've never had my own.  I got the idea in my head that I could take the 2x WD blues out of my gaming tower and pop them in the NAS, in hopes the VM would operate faster.

Will this kill these SSD's really quickly since they're not designed for 24/7 operation?  Part of me says "nah, it'll be fine, what's the difference between being in the NAS running a VM or two vs in a PC tower running 24/7?".  With my first baby almost here, my budget is whatever I have laying around the house.

Thanks,
Mike

Ironwolf Pro vs Exos for video server
Posted by: Enquiries - 01-18-2023, 10:30 AM - Forum: Before you buy Q&A - Replies (1)

Hi,

I'm looking to build a 4 - 6 drive QNAP video server and can't find a clear answer as to whether Exos would perform worse than Ironwolf Pro. It seems that on paper on should go for Ironwolf Pro as this is the recommended drive for this use case but the Exos are better value at the moment and in some ways higher spec. Is there something in the architecture of the drives that mean Exos isn't really appropriate.

Thanks

Will

Hi, always enjoy your videos, am considering the synology 920+ or the 923+ but am also interested in the qnap 464, I need it mainly for photography library and back ups , was a bit disappointed the synology doesn’t do better image searching, which would you rate for photography/ video backing up of photo libray on iPhone etc, .
Regarding the nas drives I listened to your point regarding noise of drives, is 10 tb (say we red Plus) the sweet spot regarding noise and does it make a difference 5200 / 7200 rpm?
Last question - I have 2 unused 4 tb we reds ( not plus) should I keep them and mix them in with the two high capacity drives - will this work, or sell them and get some red plus or iron wolf is better

Thanks for the help Smile

  Replacement for Drobo 5N
Posted by: Enquiries - 01-17-2023, 10:00 PM - Forum: Before you buy Q&A - Replies (1)

Hi. Ive used a drobo for years that needs urgent replacment due to current ventura issue. Ive used 4 TB on it, large photo collection for personal and business, with many files. I use plex server for music only. I have no current structure to the many 1000#s of photos, and am considering qnaps Qmagie. I need photos structure (facial recognition etc), plex, backup stores (Time machine), equivalent to beyond raid, different profile user access for family members and work to give separate storage for each of them. Assuming qnap, what would be best for me? Fast access and processing across 1Gb CAT6 network. I would reuse the drives from the drobo. Plesae advise whether i need any extra drives for better speed/access etc. Any help would be gratefully recieved, models or options? Thanks
