  DS923+ vs Ds920+
Posted by: Enquiries - 12-12-2022, 04:00 PM - Forum: Before you buy Q&A - Replies (3)

I need to change my DS218+, and I am hesitating between the DS920+ or the DS923+.

My use cases are mostly:
- Home cloud storage: files, photos, WordPress website
- Plex and multimedia storage

I mostly watch videos through my Apple TV 4k, and I also like to use Plex on my iphone/ipad while traveling like I am using Netflix.

I am concerned about not having hardware transcoding with the 923+, but I am not sure I will need it when watching videos with an iPhone/iPad.

Would you be able to guide me a bit?

NAS for the first time and setup backup
Posted by: Enquiries - 12-12-2022, 09:00 AM - Forum: Before you buy Q&A - Replies (1)

Hi, I have Macbook pro almost filled 0.75 TB and my spouse 0.5 TB. We both have iPhone and do not have iCloud storage subscription and stored all data in the local Mac. My major focus is backup of data to NAS drive. My previous Mac died one day and unfortunately few days later my phone broke and had to buy new phone with NO backup. Reason for me to start thinking about private storage.

  NAS/NVR Needed
Posted by: Enquiries - 12-12-2022, 01:00 AM - Forum: Before you buy Q&A - Replies (1)

Looking for the best solution for home surveillance and data storage. Im a home user with about 12 network cameras using ONVIF. Most are wired some are wireless. I would like to eventually integrate it into Home Assistant or even host my smart home assistant on a VM on the NAS/NVR. It would be nice to have a rack mountable unit as my home network is growing and I am thinking about getting a rack to house all of my hardware.

  QNAP TVS-h1288X Inital Set Up
Posted by: thamaddoktor - 12-11-2022, 07:18 PM - Forum: First Steps with your NAS - Replies (1)

Hello!

Thank you in advance for your help.  I am relatively a nube at this level of a NAS.  I currently have a 24TB WD EX4100 that runs my plex.  I needed more space and a more powerful NAS to run my immense 4K and 1080 library...so I went big.

I purchased 6 WD RED Pro 16TB HDDs.  I am about to get 2 more for a total of 8 WD RED Pro 16TB HDDs.  I have not purchased any SSDs for SSD cacheing.

Any here is where my questions come into play...for the set up.

I am only using this NAS for Plex.  I have an immense 1080 library (over 2k in titles) and a growing 4K library.

- Should I get some SSDs for caching?  What is the benefit?
- I am going to set up my RAID to 5.  (I will have a secondary backup of all files on my old NAS - so no RAID 6 needed)
-- DO I need pool guaranteed snapshot space?
-- Do I need overprovisioning?

I am watching all of your videos to learn about this technology and options....but I just can't deterimine what woudl be best for juts use with PLEX.  Also, it both options burn up usable storage space...

Any thoughts, recommedations, and suggestions would be appreciated!

Thanks!

  Qnap TS 251+ DLNA issue
Posted by: Enquiries - 12-11-2022, 05:30 PM - Forum: Before you buy Q&A - Replies (1)

Hi using DLNA on my Nas to view photo Album I have created. I use my android 4k Sony Tv to view the photos Via Sony built in media App, using the DLNA process, If I Add a Picture or Album to the Nas through Photo Station the Sony TV does not see the Picture or Album. I have restarted the DLNA and Reindexed, But still the photo or Album will not show, even after a week.. All I get is the same Albums , Video , and Music files I started with. It seems as though the DLNA file is not being sent to the TV. Is there a way to force the DLNA file to be send? Note:if I change the name of the Nas server the TV see the change. but no change to the photos I have tried using Qnap Android version for Sony Tv but the user interface is rubbish and will not give full screen in pictures. but this uses SMB which works Ok. your Help would be most welcome kind regards
Richard

Adding to Synology DS920+an unsupported disk
Posted by: Enquiries - 12-11-2022, 05:00 PM - Forum: Before you buy Q&A - Replies (1)

Hi,
I have a Synology DS920+ with 2 WD140EFFX in SHR raid mode. Now, I have bought two WD161KFGX thinking of adding them to the storage pool as I am finishing the space.
Now, my fault: I did not watch the compatibility list, so these two new disks are not officially compatible with Synology products. If I try to add them to the storage pool, the system alerts me that important data could be lost.
In your opinion and experience, should I continue the operation and hope not to loose everything or it is better to take two other compatible disks and use the 16TB ones as a backup or something else?
Thank you,
Stefano

  Photography and Videography NAS
Posted by: Enquiries - 12-11-2022, 04:30 PM - Forum: Before you buy Q&A - Replies (1)

Thank you for your videos and information! We love our DS214play, but it's very old at this point and what we're looking for is to speed things up. Here is what we use the most on our NAS now (we used save more movies for the kids, but they tend to just stream content now, so it is not as much of as need as it used to be).

* Photos - we are a growing family of 5 and more devices taking pictures. I debate on how to best set this up (currently it's one combined location that only I or my wife manage). Longer term, I'd like to be able give each kid a fixed amount of space, but still backup, and still be able to share on the network.
* Video - much like photos, there are lots of phone videos (a lot less of the DSLR video and photos now than previously). Would love to be able to edit video on the NAS, but no biggie as it doesn't look like any really do this.
* HDHomerun DVR
* Speed - 214play is ok, but slow. Maybe something with SSD cache to speed things up?

  NAS Adobe for Lightroom photos
Posted by: Enquiries - 12-11-2022, 07:30 AM - Forum: Before you buy Q&A - Replies (1)

Hi
Your channel is awesome thank you. Ive been focusing on 2 and 4 bay NAS and looked 2023 reviews. Also looked The Best Photography NAS to Buy in 2022 (s there an updated recommendation) I was thinking of buying 2 drive nas and adding 16TB hard discs but I think 4 bay may be better for future proofing. I edit photos on desktop with additional 8TB hard drive internal thats 80% full and not backed up. Im looking at NAS drives for additional storage and backup. Im not sure I'll ever use all teh features they have. I think speed and memory cache are important amd worth paying for for. I live in uK. Could you possibly help narrow down my selection? Thank you.   NAS For Family Storage
Posted by: Enquiries - 12-10-2022, 11:30 PM - Forum: Before you buy Q&A - Replies (1)

I am looking to get a NAS for family storage / archive purposes. I wanted to confirm whether or not my hopes are already built into any one brand's ecosystem, and whether or not my understanding of these technologies is accurate.

Firstly, I plan to use a NAS because of the redundancy and low risk for data loss. I understand that while a NAS is secure in the event one drive goes out, if a house fire destroys the whole NAS you still lose everything. So my desire is to eventually get 2 NAS systems that can be stored at 2 separate locations and operate synchronously, but until I can obtain a second NAS I'd like to auto-backup my data to AWS Glacier storage. So, is this all relatively easily doable?

Second, and a bit more involved I'd imagine, I'd like to dedicate half the NAS's overall storage to my side of my family, and the other half completely separately to my wife's side of the family.

Finally, Can there be private folders only specific family members can access?
